  1. so what... on New Audio Disc Formats and Copyrights · · Score: 3, Insightful

there are always pro models of all gear that lack the sorts of 'anti-piracy' features of the commercial ones. once one person rips a source and it hits the Net, what's the difference?

Is the AAC spec patent-free? And if not, why should I bother encoding my purchased music to a format that I don't have control over?

easy, killer. put the richard stallman voodoo doll down... there ya go. encode in any format you want.

i'm just saying the iPod probably won't support it, and that the various shootouts are unfair if they don't compare the codecs at different bitrates.

So when is Ogg coming to the iPod?

it probably isn't... once apple works out some licensing stuff, it'll probably support AAC.

AAC doesn't have the open source buzzword compliance. and a lot of people pooh pooh it because the head to head tests always show ogg coming out on top. but this is largely because they're all done at like 64kbit, where ogg shines. AAC shines at 128kbit, where it reportedly is acoustically transparent when encoded with CD-quality source.

ideally, they'd provide functionality for both formats, but i doubt they will, because they're already wedded to AAC with Quicktime's MPEG-4 capabilities.

Wake up: the web is about communication. If you conform to open standards, you aid communication, because it means that anyone can reach you. HTML, PNG, etc., all conform to standards (such as those produced by the W3C and IETF). Gratuitous use of non-standard formats is worth complaining about, because when enough complaints get made, the websites either stop using the nonstandard format, or convince enough people to create a standard for it.

Hmm, a gray box with no content.

It appears that a LOT of readers either don't have or have disabled Flash, and I'm one of them. It might be worth waiting until the website repairs their site into something standards-conforming. HTML + PNG preferred.

give me a break... you know what you are? a standards snob. is xhtml ok? will gif cut the mustard if it's lighter and looks the same? do you roll over all of the images of every site you visit and get their url to make sure they conform to your standards?

marshall mcluhan aside, the medium is not the entirety of the message. it's really pigheaded to reject content out of hand based on the delivery format.

flash is an open file format (look here and the latest version of flash has gone a long way towards meeting accessibility requirements. so suck it up, and stop spreading FUD.

the scary thing about the advent of technology in media is that while we expect that it would enable more "use" out of our media in various ways -- take for example the CD-ROM of this guy's photo album -- in fact, so many companies are endevoring to turn this tech revolution into a way to either provide less to the consumer or charge more for what they already have.

for instance, divx, god rest it's soul, was basically an effort to remove our ability to purchase and watch our favorite movies again and again, by luring us with better image quality and sound. there are plenty more examples of this, and plans for even more.

it's up to people like us, who realize when people are being ripped off by technology because they don't know better, to get them riled up over the issue. send more people to the EFF et. al.
