I have had three Linksys wireless routers and had pretty good luck. However, the v5 I bought a month ago died in less than two days. Fortunately CompUSA exchanged it and the replacement has been working fine.
One nice feature (which unfortunatly didn't work with mine) is the 'Management Mode' It allows you to put the router in a special mode to re-flash, even if the existing firmware is corrupt. Has a bare-bones web interface to upload the file. Handy.
Too bad mainstream appears to also mean 'cheap, unreliable parts' too...
I graduated with a BS in CS, worked for two years and decided I didn't want to code for a living. Went back for an MBA. Played that game for a while and decided I wanted to research and teach - now I'm working on a PhD.
Graduate education is not like undergrad where you're getting a baseline set of skills to be molded by your experience. It is much more targeted and refined to the skills you need for the profession or dicipline you choose - hence the term "master's degree."
Remember, MBA stands for "Master of Business Administration." Think about it...
Missing the point; Nintendo is saying that MS may be doing something detrimental to short term profit (selling next-gen hardware early, thus reducing returns on current-gen investments) in order to take market share from competitors, thereby (hopefully) improving long term profit potential. Nintendo is notorious for eeking out every last bit of return from products before moving to the next generation (think gameboy), so it's understandable why this may irk them.
Entirely different situations. Breaking the GPL for commercial gain is exactly the type of violation the Copyright Act is intended to punish. Impairing technological advancement, blocking fair use, and using a sledgehammer to swat a teenage music fan - that's not even close to either the intent of the current law (exclud. DMCA, etc...) or the historical societal objectives and norms from which the laws are derived.
so does this mean the varios linux distro's will be able to include a dvd player by default? could be a boon to wider acceptance on the desktop, especially at home
I once had a particularly difficult assingment for a data structures class. I worked late into the night and eventually fell asleep laying on my laptop. I awoke around 6 the next morning and in my groggy stupor, changed something in the code and then returned to sleep. When I rewoke around 10, the program worked!
While I was glad the assignment was complete, I have no idea what I changed that morning or how/why that fixed the problem... behold the power of sleep programming.
You have to use their software, either RMM (win) or RMML (java). The karma has a built in DHCP client or you can hard code an IP. Once it has an IP, you can hit it with a web browser and actually dl the java client from the karma (however, newer versions are available online, so this is only useful in a pinch). The java client mirrors the functionality of the win client, it performs decently on my box, I have a AthlonXP 2000+ running Gentoo, kernel 2.6, JRE 1.4, and XFCE.
The karma organizes music according to it's metadata (album, artist, year, etc...). This frustrates me a little, since I like to keep some things segregated. But I can just make playlist or script some metadata changes on my files.
I highly recommend checking out the forums on riovolution.com, there's some chaff to wade through, but there is lots of great info.
I had a Neuros, I sent it back. It was huge, heavy, took forever to boot, and I was very disappointed in the FM broadcast feature's sound quality. The ability to record from FM and use soundprints to ID songs was very cool, but didn't justify the price.
I have a Rio Karma now. I love it. The form factor is excellent, the sound quality is amazing, the boot up is quick, the interface is incredibly responsive, I'm running out of adjectives, so I'll just leave it at "overall very impressive."
A huge factor for me though is the Ethernet capability of the Karma. Not only does it provide cross platform capabilities (the Neuros linux usb drivers were very immature back when I had mine), but it allows me to use my Karma as an AudioTron equivalent. I have the dock in by my stereo with a wireless bridge. A very elegant setup.
from what I can tell, that shouldn't be to difficult, may just be a political decision waiting to happen. When I upgraded my firmware, it simply dl'd the file to the karma, then the karma updated itself. don't see why it couldn't do that through java. If I had to guess, I'd say they want to keep the firmware process from being sniffed on ethernet and people hacking their own. doesn't make too much sense, since I've already read about people sniffing the USB link...
Yup, you can create and edit playlist while music is playing.
I have a friend who has played back ogg files at 400+ kbps on his karma. Not sure what he encoded them with, but he said the playback was great.
I tried the ogg files from here: http://users.pandora.be/sjeng/floggy.html they didn't play too well, too fast, but you could almost make out the song. Don't know about intermediate rates, all my stuff is 160.
Don't know about the charsets either.
I suggest you check out the forums on riovolution.com. I know there have been several threads about the gapless issue - apparently that's something slated to be added in an upcomming firmware releast. I have the crossfader turned on, just a preferrence. You can probably find out about the charsets here too. Several of the Rio developers hang out on the forums regularly.
Only problem is you have to use USB to upgrade the firmware and it's proprietary driver is Windows only. Once you've upgraded the firmware though, the java client works great. Be sure to dl the latest version though. The developer himself has a site, check out www.riovolution.com's forums for details.
I have mine hooked to my stereo in my living room with a wireless bridge connecting to my network. Files sync faster than USB2 over 100mb ethernet, slower over my 11b link.
Plays ogg like a charm. The UI is slick and the quickest and most responsive I've seen on an mp3 player (including ipod).
Well worth the ~$300 I paid. Pick one up today!
And yell at them to make the firmware upgradable under Linux.
why finally? a lot of business people have common sense. you only hear about it when they don't. an mba is exactly what it says, a "master of business administration." means you're technically good at the process of business and supposedly exposed to the underlying theories. says nothing about the individual's common sense.
it's like when they show tornado reports on the national news from the midwest, it's always some trailer-parker in curlers and a mu-mu. ergo, all midwesterners are hicks.
(disclaimer - I'm a midwesterner with an MBA) (disclaimer to disclaimer - I also have a BS in CS and do not live in a trailer)

nice... good to see that attitude more pervasive than in the past.
I own a roomba, there is no self charger available. It must have been mis-labled. The charging mechanism is a two prong plug, and the roomba has no way of lining it up or plugging it in.
Check the iRobot roomba website. If there was one, I'd be the first to buy it.

It's because the project manager has an MBA from the University of Texas - the Longhorns.
