They have been doing this for years now.. It could be as long as 5 years uce@ftc.gov has been accepting spam. Talk about your old news. And all the slashdot drones eat it up like it's some kind of spam revolution.. "Wow, Uncle Sam will help us fight spam! Gee whiz!"
Nice work, Cmdr Fuckface. And to think.. I barely read/. anymore, but the one day I'm bored and look at the front page.. big old Buffy spoiler. And you're right, it's not even the first time. Didn't CmdrTaco even post something like, "I never would've posted the Lone Gunman spoiler?" And now he goes and posts this.
Come on. How many times are the mindless slashbots going to moderate this joke up? Seriously, in almost every thread someone has to chime in, "But Slashdot readers don't go on dates! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Is a piece of garbage shaped like a city. The only thing keeping it going is of course GE. Around Albany and Schenectady is a nice area though. I found it a little dreary, but it's a great place to have a family and a good tech job. There are some top-notch school districts, cost of living is low, and outside of the cities it's pretty safe. Niskayuna is nice.
Yes, this is real. I sent a short HTML message to my Yahoo account that included the words medieval, mocha, and expression. All three were changed just like the article. You can do this too, just make sure you send an HTML mail.
A truly great idea.. and to think, the only thing you need in order to power the device is the patented Tesla Helmet(tm), powering hundreds of thousands of volts through your skull!
Kurzweil talks about all of this in The Age of Spiritual Machines. Highly recommended if you're interested in the whole teleportation / transporting your consciousness thing.
BTW, the Slashdot blackout was like two months ago.. isn't it time to take it out of your sig?
1280? That's ridiculous. For that resolution, why don't the theaters just run out to Staples and pick up a $2000 Canon projector? I mean, on a big enough screen the pixels could be over an inch wide!
China said it was developing a format called Advanced Versatile Disc (AVD) that would be used only in the Greater China region
This format would only be used in China. Makes sense, since there's no way they could sell these players in the US or Europe because it would infringe patents. Even if it doesn't display the logo it still decodes CSS, MPEG, AC3, all of which are patented.
They'll still get exported, from stores like Lik Sang.. but who knows, customs will probably seize them at the border.
Why on earth would you post a story about some Florida airport giving up on face recognition, when we just heard that New York City is already using this technology? It is already being used at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to scan faces as people board the ferry. Way to go Jamie - raising that journalistic bar of integrity and thoroughness for everyone!
People act like broadband is such a gift from the heavens, like we already have it too good and we shouldn't complain. But isn't this stuff supposed to get faster and cheaper as time goes by? Cable Internet has been around for about 5 years now, and the price has gone up while speed has gone down. Is this the miraculous gift you are talking about?
Cable has extraordinary bandwidth.. so this isn't a last mile problem. This is a problem occurring at the backbone level - bandwidth is expensive. It shouldn't be! I don't know the answer, but why is it that long distance and wireless have fallen through the floor while data seems to be getting more expensive? Why are there networks like Internet2, which is AMAZINGLY fast, connecting our universities while we're stuck on capped, metered connections?
Actually, there is no conclusive evidence of lower speed limits preventing accidents. In some cases accidents have even gone up.. I'm not suggesting a causal relationship, that has to be proven. But it's worth noting that the jury's still out on this one. Nobody will pay to fund the research though, because speeding is a cash cow for law enforcement, government, and insurance companies.
Did you know that insurance companies give away enforcement hardware to PD's? Things like radar and laser speed detectors, photoradar trailers, etc. Think about it: everyone benefits! Cops catch more speeders, which brings in cash. Meanwhile, insurance companies have a justification for raising rates on people.
You keep using that word prevent. While you obviously have no clue what it means, you bring up a good point: There is a difference between preventing something, and punishing something. Nothing is preventing you from punching me in the nose.. IF you choose to do it, you might be punished for it.. but nothing prevented you.
On the other hand, this roller coaster thing is preventing people from doing what they like, before the fact. It's an attempt to protect people from themselves..
Anyways, I'm a busy man and I don't waste my time arguing with children. Stop calling names, and maybe I'll give you the time of day.
there have been a number of deaths (actually, usually at least one every summer)
I don't know.. according to the report on the congressman's page, there has only been one death ever in NJ, and the victim was medically predisposed. Now I think that's only brain injuries, but this page doesn't list much in NJ either, and most of it is due to people not using the safety bar.
Check your facts before you pass on anecdotes as truth.
According to Markey's page, there have been 57 known cases of this type of injury. Only 57 cases, ever! Millions of people go to theme parks every year! Has the whole world gone crazy, when congressmen are spending their budgets investigating a one in a million occurrence while ignoring the continual erosion of our civil liberties? It's my right to go on a roller coaster and kill my brain any damn way I want to!
Just another example of what big government causes.. useless legislation, inquiries into problems that don't exist. Your tax dollars at work! Welcome to the New USA, designed to protect yourself from yourself. I'm ashamed to say this buffoon is from my state, Massachusetts. I'll also mention that not a single injury of this type has actually happened in Mass - I guess he's just trying to prevent the one or two injuries that MIGHT happen this season.
It just makes me angry when people focus on extremely rare, freak problems.. like people making such a fuss about school shootings, or shark attacks last summer. Statistically speaking, these things simply do not happen! Why don't we focus on a real problem?
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA NICE TRY, but even a FOOL such as yourself should know that 3M doesn't make sharpies. THEY ARE MADE BY SANFORD. I HAVE NOW INVALIDATED YOUR ENTIRE ARGUMENT, HAHA AHAHAHAHAHA
Send them back to school.. because they are obviously unable to read:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
You knew this stuff was coming.. I thought they'd kill HPUX for sure, though! DEC Unix (aka compaq tru64) finally dies.. it was truly a legendary OS. That's the only thing that surprises me about this roadmap. Maybe it's just because I used DU more than HPUX.
The rest of it is pretty predictable. I mean, I never even heard of a damn HP Kayak.. wtf is that? Of course OpenView and Insight Manager both have to stay, due to their ubiquity. iPaq kills Jornada hands-down. Compaq trounces HP for business desktops.
And let's see.. printing.. there's no clear winner there. HP's got a LaserJet in every office in the universe.. But don't rule out Compaq, they are great at rebranding plastic Lexmark inkjets!

It's too bad they cut the overture.. I love that scene in the house.

IEEE 1394
It's 1394. People who use real computers call it 1394. Thank you.

There are a bunch at Six Flags NE.. good coasters too, and new ones. Batman just opened this year.

Hey, at least I didn't quote Ben Franklin. YET......
