That is a poor conclusion, while this may be true for previous instances, this is not necessarily true for all instances. It should be noted that a dictatorship can any apply to any form of governance, including fascism.

It should also be noted that non-democratic governments are not automatically against the people and not all democratic governments are for the people. What is important are the people in charge and whether they are working for themselves, and their friends, or whether they are working in the interests of the people.

Well while this might break the ability to present a fully formatted web page in e-mail, it may just encourage people to host such content, instead of overloading e-mail with it. The added advantage of hosted content, is reduced storage needs. Anyhow, from what I can tell this won't stop people from creating formatted e-mail, just those trying to pump a whole website into a single e-mail.

The Patent office needs to wake up and start scrutinizing applications more.

This is probably also why IBM wants a notion of quality in patent applications. From some of the patents I have read you get so lost in the "patent speak", that it is hard to tell what is really being patented - think of this in the same way of trying to read a product description chock full of marketing buzzwords and double-speak. After a couple of hours of decoding the language, you might end finding that the whole document is actually describing the wheel, even though the whole thing was 20 pages long and it originally looked like it was trying to patent a new rocket engine. With this sort of problem its clear that time is wasted processing unnecessary patents, and why some patents get let through (fed up examiners).

I realise that some of this crazy writing style is attributed to legal type documents, but I have seen legal documents that were much easier to read and did not require a degree in lawyer-speak or double-speak.

The industry is so intent on controlling everything they own and not allow the indivual fair use, that they seem more ready to shoot themselves in the foot than letting have other people have any sense of using it a way that makes it worth while.

Well I am not going to make any analysis based on what people on /. say they won't pay, since in many cases the readership seems to want stuff for cheap or free (I know I am generalising, so don't take this personally). The market is not about the sort of people who say they love a Mac, but wouldn't even fork out for a Dell because it costs too much. The market is about people who are willing to a price for a well designed product, that works well, looks good and is easy to use.

  13. Re:just the beginning on How Apple Kept the iPhone Secret · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think it serves as a great tech demo. Features that work will start showing up elsewhere, patents or no patents. Phones are a commodity business, the iPhone is a boutique product. Too expensive for wide adoption, but maybe a portent of things to come.

Remember how people said the iPod was too expensive and had no market when it came out? I think the iPhone may be in the same situation. It certainly has a lot going for it, including integration, design and simplicity. When you consider that there is the $4000 Vertu, that is getting bought by people with deep pockets and those who want to make a statement, I believe there is market enough for a well design, easy to use Smart Phone. This may just be the product to bring the smart phone to the masses.

On the way back to conform with US customs laws all passenger baggage was searched prior to boarding the aircraft. Then when you get to immigrations there is a person telling you which counter to go to. Since the person in front of me was taking so much time and the next counter was empty, I decided to change to another lane, where I was told to go back to the lane I was in - I am sure working for "Homeland Security" requires a degree in how to annoy the hell out of visiting people.

It may do, but like many things there are alternative approaches.

From working on embedded hardware with flash memory, this makes me wonder whether possible addition of ZFS is meant to be for flash storage? Let me explain: flash memory has a fairly limited write-count, relative to hard disks, so to compensate for this memory is written in a circular fashion, to ensure that a given sector is written the least often possible. In addition to this, from what I can tell, Apple's main sales point are low profile computers and portables. The latter would benefit from flash storage as means of extending battery life, even if it is for a certain elements, such as for the OS which is accesed far more frequently than anything else on disk. Given this I wouldn't be surprised to see flash memory in future models of Apple portables, using ZFS, while HFS+ is still used for the hard disks.

This is pure speculation, but I feel that it has a high probabilty of being near the mark.
