I remember when Win95 was giving me all sorts of trouble on my Thinkpad 365ED, I installed Redhat 6.0. It loaded with no problem, and it was nice to have a usable laptop again. Ever since that experience (back in 1999(?)) I have been thankful to IBM, and I'm glad that they are contributing to Linux. (Also why I continue to use Redhat to this day)

  17. Some ideas to improve the case on Hardwoodware · · Score: 3

I thought the idea was kind of interesting.
Since he had such nice wood, it might have been better to conceal the drives within, and use one of the solid pieces of oak on a hinge for the front piece. Think of how a small fridge or, in this case, a cabinet opens.
One other thought is more vents. He could have easily made a few slats to allow more cooling, and probably thrown in a couple more fans while he was at it. All in all nice. After all, I don't have an oak PC case.

  19. Re:What's the deal? on Slash 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

Using a working code name for an upcoming release, gives the developers the opportunity to decide what numerical value to assign to it. To make a long story short, it leaves room to call it whatever you want. As a developer, I have often used a code name for the project.
For example, if the current release is called 1.0.4, the next release might become 1.0.5. But sometimes I make so many modifications, that instead of increasing the revision, I might increase the minor, in this case it would be 1.1.0, or if there has been a huge amount of changes, I might bump it up to 2.0.0.

On another note, congrats to the Slash crew.

  21. PCI bus will be around a while on When The PCI Bus Departs · · Score: 2

Even though a replacement is proposed for PCI, it will be around for a bit longer. Just look at the way ISA was slowly phased out. While many motherboards have only PCI now, (and an AGP slot for video), many main boards still have legacy ISA slots, usually 1 or 2. If a new standard bus is agreed upon, PCI 'legacy' slots will probably remain on newer boards.
