Don't design nested loops so that you need a goto to break out of them. Really.
As for assembly and especially machine language, goto is a necessary evil, since jumps/gotos are the processors method of code flow control. There's no need to carry over the baggage to higher level languages though. Just like there is no need to treat a string as a list of bytes/words/whatever in modern languages.
Sometimes you are stuck using more primitive programming to avoid overhead. In 99.9% of the cases you are just fooling yourself by thinking you must use goto, however.
Ah yes, Ubuntu. Before even getting to the installer, the Live CD dumps you to the console if you are running an x??? series ATI card (a fairly common occurrence these days I'd say). Then it's up to the user to configure X to use the Vesa drivers instead. Joy.
I've spent 80 euros on the stupid nonfunctional digital shit, I'm not spending any more.
Money is the problem here. If people can just get their "tv-fix" for free over the Internet, why pay for television licenses? (YLE doesn't have commercials)
On the other hand the only country in a position to actually be able to invade Canada is....the U.S. The european countries that were invaded during WW2 were all neighbours of aggressive and expansionistic nations with strong armies. The only strong country that fell in that war (except Germany at the end) was France and that was because of innovative German tactics and mobility, not because France had a weak (as in small or poorly equipped) army. The best elements of their army just happened to be in the wrong place (Holland) due to a skillfull large scale feint by the Germans. After that they were too slow-moving to form any kind of front.
I don't see the U.S as having an expansionistic agenda, at least not in the sense that it might include annexing Canada. Mostly because Canada is already a western democracy. They really don't need a strong army in the traditional sense. Who would they use it against?
Even if your buying a license the disc is proof that you own a license. If you lose it the point is moot, you still can't prove you bought it. Unless were supposed to save the receipts for all the cd:s we buy..
This analogy fails since you can't make a copy of the car yourself. I always thought that the original, even if unplayable, works as a sort of license for your personal copy/copies. As long as you can show that you have an original you would be safe, even if that original is damaged.
Accept their decision. Especially if the elected party does not begin to dismantle the democracy under which they were elected. Democracys greatest flaw is that it can self-destruct. But so can all other non-utopian/dystopian forms of governments.
If I remember correctly Merry slays the Witch King in the book. Eowyn is still a man (as in human) and is defeated but not killed by the Witch King, who is stabbed in the neck by Merry using his obviously magical sword. In the book the sword is from the barrow mounds. In the theatrical version of the movies Merry can't kill the Which King (and doesn't) since he doesn't have a magical sword. He does somehow manage to hurt him though and Eowyn manages to kill him which seems to mean that "man" means gender in the movie but race in the book.
In the extended edition movies the hobbits are given elvish swords in Lothlorien, which should be capabe of hurting the Witch King. But there is an error in the extended editions: in the Two Towers, Merry (or was it Pippin?) is told to go sharpen his old sword in the Rohan war camp. Why would the elves give them old and blunt swords? This scene should have been removed or altered in the extended edition.
And yet people buy downloadable music for non-zero prices more and more. The supply here is also "infinite" so there must be another factor. Two in fact. Quality and time. When I buy a downloadable track I can count on it having decent quality (and that it's not fake!) and it's easier and faster for me to find.
Even better (or worse), you need to verify that all your test results are valid, which for many applications would require a bug-free version of the program that generates the output you compare against.
Theres nothing preventing a trojan like this to just turn off safe mode. Or even modify FF to trick the user it still is in safe mode even when its not.
Effective means that is requires special expertiese and/or tools to circumvent. Entering service codes into a dvd-player to make it region-free or using a marker pen to circumvent cd copy-protection does not count. Installing a specially designed mod-chip into a game console in order to play copied discs is.
Recordings made today with a little firewire preamp and a copy of garageband sound better than recordings made in the old magnetic tape based studios.
A recording sounds good or bad mostly due to the skill level of the engineer and producer. Compare mid-60s recordings to typical early 70s recordings made on then new 16-track.
Theres a big difference between a full-featured ide and a handy code editor with on-the-fly compilation, syntax colouring, bracket matching, automatic indention, refactoring tools and such. I would say go with Eclipse, in its basic form it does not attempt to write your code for you but it still makes you more productive.
America's defeat of Communism was at least as important as the Union victory in the Civil War IMHO. A Manichean struggle which we won thanks to the stalwart strength of the great troika (Reagan, Thatcher and JP2).
I prefer to think:
1. Communism isn't "defeated". 2. The Soviet Union "defeated" itself in the end.

Another purpose of parking fees is to discourage people to take their car when they can use public transport instead.

Wikipedia is your friend.

I think he meant he is pro-patent in principle (the right to patent your ideas) but has problems with how the patent system is implemented.

Time for me to read the book agan it seems :)

Try Guild Wars, it has no monthly feel

At least generation X has finally gotten a cause of its own.

Why won't the much improved firewall count? Does popup blocking in SP2s IE count then?
Heh, in Finland we pay about 5 euros per gallon...sigh..

* viewing man/info pages from the GUI.
This was around in gnome 1.x but got removed as "unneccessary" at some point..
* preferred application defaults
I don't really get this, it's been in gnome for several releases now. There has been some improvements but it certainly not new.
* sound preferences.
Same for this one.
...but "guns don't kill people, people kill people"...
