Windows 9x themes didn't really change anything about the widgets, save the color and font. GTK and QT support not only changing the widget color and font, but they allow bitmapped coloring of widgets, and the widgets can look completely different (ie radio buttons, check boxes, and scrollbars can look totally different.)
Windows 9x themeing does NOT provide the same level of tweakability as GTK/Qt themeing.

Well, Redhat just can't with win some people. It's a case of "Damned if you do, damned if you don't." About the only way these so-called Open Source advocates would come to accept Redhat is if they got rid of the gui installer, make KDE the default desktop, and lost 99% of their market share.
It's not enough that the company's business model is intertwined with Open Source, GPL software. It's not enough that they fund GCC, kernel,, gnome development, as well as many other GPL projects.
I never thought I'd see so much bitching about a company that sells/supports GPL software. I guess many slashdotters are just a lot of ingrateful elitists.
Read the KDE FAQ: http://www.kde.org/whatiskde/index.html
"Together with a free implementation of UNIX such as Linux, UNIX/KDE constitutes a completely free and open computing platform available to anyone free of charge including its source code for anyone to modify."
Now, they don't go into detail here, but they are touting customization as an advantage of KDE. I would think modifying Konqueror or the KDE menus would both apply here.. So, do they or don't they want people modifying their software? Redhat and Ximian have always modified Gnome, so what's the big deal with Redhat modding KDE?
They didn't make KDE look like Gnome, they have recognized KDE as a valid option. Perhaps if they made KDE look WORSE than Gnome, then we'd have something to bitch about.
"Navindra Umanee: This is bad. Why are they doing this? They seem to be actively trying to destroy us by making us look bad. What is the point of all these stupid changes to cripple KDE and make us look like (or worse than) GNOME?"
They only thing they have done is accept KDE as a valid desktop option for users. They have always taken the default Gnome and customized it, and now they are doing the same to KDE.
If they don't want companies modifying their software, they need to release KDE under a more restrictive license. People can't release under a free/open license which *encourages* people to modify it and expect people not to.
On my Gentoo 1.2 system, I emerged rpm2targz and converted both rpms for Kohan awards edition. Upon running the game, I get a message after "Loading Objects" stating that a wav file could not be loaded.
Anyone else see this?
Gav, any idea when you guys will release the tgz version?
CS does NOT work in Wine as far as most people are concerned.
Here are the main problems with CS in Wine:
You cannot play in secure servers (If someone says this isn't a big deal, they are lying. This is a huge deal, because you cannot play on 99% of the servers on the net.)
Voice does NOT work.
Sound still lags on some cards/setups.
I support TG and I subscribe to their service, but it really sucks when people go around claiming that a game works great, even though it's missing features, or has MAJOR issues. This is not the right way to get people gaming in Linux.
Enlighten me.. What's not to like about a company who employs people to create software for the community, under a license which basically ensures that they have no control over it? They're writing software for the community, and encouraging businesses to adopt more free software.
What's not to like about that?
Their distro? I find it comparable to many other distros. It's a fine desktop, as well as a fine workstation or server.
Just because something is not obscure doesn't mean it's 'uncool' or 'evil'.
Nonsense. He is making a scene, similar to the scene that Skylarov made unintentionally.. The press will eat it up, and the general population will know a little bit more about the DMCA than they did yesterday.. For Bruce, mission accomplished.
Thanks Bruce.
If he catches hell from this, I've got some cash to throw his way for some bail:)
> Seems Apple, out of the goodness of their hearts, these days is a big believer in royalty free web standards (and open standards period).
If they're so interested in providing free web standards, why haven't they released Quicktime for Unix yet?
For some reason I feel that Apple is not porting Quicktime to Unix for the same reason Microsoft didn't port Internet Explorer to Linux - to prevent unnecessary encouragment of an alternate platform. If you doubt that big compaines do such things, consider why Microsoft ported IE to Solaris and HP/UX
, but not to Linux. I can assure it it wasn't the $50 it would have cost them to recompile on their test Linux box. The reason is that Sun and HP aren't marketing Solaris and HP/UX as replacements for Windows and therefore not a potential threat. Proof that Microsoft is more interested in money than improving the world's overall computing experience.
Am I surprised? Not really. I'm also not surprised that I still can't download Quicktime for Linux. If Real was selling an OS, they'd fail to produce a Linux port of RealOne , just as Apple has failed to produce a Linux port of Quicktime.
While Opera is a nice browser, why would a company actually spend money on licenses for a browser when there are Mozilla, Netscape, and IE?
I'm not saying Opera is not a nice browser, what I'm saying is that either IE or Mozilla aren't bad enough to prompt most businesses to pay for a product which they can have for free.
Basically, why pay for 100% when you can get 98% for free? (This is debatable of course)
I finally made the switch myself. I've been dual-booting for years, but just last week I decided that the time has come for me to get rid of the Windows partition, and to dedicate my time to Linux.
Now I REALLY have incentive to post to forums and email developers asking for them to make a Linux port.:)
Yeah, for a while I won't get to play every game under the sun, but I'll have enough to keep me occupied until the time comes when I can.
There are people in this world who would have told the cashier that he/she made a mistake (everyone knows that cashiers pay for their screw-ups out of their own pocket.)
Competetion is what drives this industry, and I don't see anything wrong with Redhat turning up the heat on Mandrake and Suse.. Hell, I think it's awesome they're doing this. I doubt Mandrake is going to take Redhat's offer sitting down, and they're going to be pushed to get off their asses and keep up with Redhat or whoever. This could be very good.
COMPETETION GOOD. MONOPOLY BAD. Say it 3 more times, and then you might have it.
Redhat's offering doesn't mean they're trying to conquer the world, and if they could create a monopoly for themselves by selling *GPL* software, that's one hell of an accomplishment. Can't I completely copy Redhat's distro, put my name on it, and re-sell it as my own, the same I can do with anything GPL? Hmm, that sounds familiar. Anyway, how in the hell can you have a monopoly by selling free software? Wasn't the GPL created to prevent such things?
Kudos to Redhat for hopefully creating the spark that made Linux distros really kick ass.
Out of curiosity, why do you read theads on GNOME when you obviously do not like it? Do us a favor: go to the KDE Beta threads, and talk trash, and tell everyone what your favorite Desktop is.
This post is not much more a troll than some of the "Interesting" KDE zealot posts I see in GNOME threads like this.
I'm getting tired of the seeing useles zealot posts here (especially KDE zealot posts, since the asses won't even let GNOME supporters have a decent conversation.)
You don't see people who actually do the work coming in here, repetetively spouting what their favorite app is (perhaps because they have better things to do?)
I would like it very much if all the zealots here (KDE, GNOME, Whatever) would shut the hell up already.
Most of us don't care what YOU like. We will try different softwares as we come acress them, and we will use whatever we like for our own reasons. If someone asks what desktop you use, by all means answer them, but don't tell us every single post (unless you're a troll.)
I can't believe you are saying Windows is actually getting worse.. I think 99% of the population will tell you that Windows has gotten MUCH better in terms of UI, security, and stability. It's still not UNIX, but it's a hell of alot better than Windows 3.1.
Go to transgaming, look at the rating on Half-life. It's given, by Transgaming, a 4/5, b/c it is NOT perfect.
I'm really upset that Loki's gone, and I'm really upset that I still play Half-life under Windows.
I subscribed to Transgaming some time ago, I have tried 2 of their releases, and countless other Wine releases, and I have not seen Half-life run decent yet. (And NO it's not running in software. I know for a fact it is not.)
Now, let me define decent. For me to play games on Wine, I would require at LEAST 85% of the speed I get in Windows, otherwise I'll just dual-boot. I see about 60% of the performance under Wine currently, and it just sucks. It's like downgrading to my old video card, on my old CPU.
I still support Transgaming, and I hope that we can actually see some 5/5 games on it (the only one which gets 5/5 is a hacked version of The Sims). I would love to play Counter-strike in Linux, but with current performance, I just can't bring myself to do it.
My system is a Duron 800 with a GF2MX400. I set my maxfps to 60 at 1024x768, and it never wavers. With Wine on Linux, I'm lucky if I can hold 40fps, and even then, it's very eager to drop down to 20, and feels like vsync is always off, with a refresh rate of 40hz. Yeah, sometimes I get 60, when I'm in a tunnel with 8 polygons and i'm not moving.
I can't believe you're expecting the man to sell out. That's just lame.
If RMS budges an inch, then he may as well hang it up b/c everything he has worked for up until now will be lost.
On a side note, I wonder what it's like to have complete freedom of speech as it was meant by the founders of the US govt.? (DMCA anyone?) Too bad we don't have more RMS types in government.
