Well this really is a very different view of Mars than to what we are used to. Those rocks are very smooth, tho it could be the dustdevils that cause that over many millions of years rather than water. Apparently this landing spot has quite a lot of them. Wouldn't it be cool if it was caused by water eroson! It would be one of the biggest discoveries of the century.
For comparison, here is the Pathfinders landing site.
(*fingers crossed for Beagle 2 and the next NASA rover*)
I suppose they could try using aerobraking to adjust the orbit around the Moon, but given the extremely low density of its atmosphere (someone more knowledgable can provide numbers...), it's unlikely that it would have a noticeable effect.
If they go low enough, there will be an extremly noticeable effect!
Otherwise nothing. The only kind of atmosphere the moon has is the solar wind.
Parent poster is completly right tho. Pathfinder got a lot more attention. Probably because it did something totally new. It used a new bouncy landing trick and it had a little rover. This mission seems to be a larger version of Pathfinder. The only major difference is that the whole lander is mobile.
Also the pathfinder mission seemed to be a lot more open. A lot of the realtime data was avaliable online. For example, during it's cruse to Mars you could watch the output from the various sensors. It was really quite cool in a geeky sorta way:)
Anyways, it's only just landed. We'll see how it goes!
Isn't this going to start a trend where hardware companies stop releasing ROM updates for their products?
I don't see how. If they haven't broken any distribution licenses then there is no problem. If they have, well they should have thought about that before they used the code.
NAT works great. It is even arguably more secure than some flat space.
It's not more secure, but it is currently easier because we are more familiar with NAT setups. Probably because most ISPs only allow one IP per customer/connection so it tends to be the norm.
Heck, some don't even allow NAT! But that's another story...
How is a movie on your computer "easier to watch"?
The computer in question has TV-out. I have a small RF modulator attached to it and it feeds the signal into the main antenna cable of the house so I can watch the output on any of my TVs. Add to that the ATi wireless remote control which works in most of the rooms.
Just choose your movie, and watch. No messing around with swapping DVDs. I can even let the kids use it!
This tells me you're just trying to shake the image of being a thief. You're trying to justify it in your mind to absolve yourself of guilt. Guess what? You ARE a thief. Sorry.
Perhaps I should have mentioned this in the original posting, but I'm copying DVDs I own. The copys are not distributed to anyone else. They are for my own use.
there goes me photoshopping various goatse images.
On the other hand, Fark might improve!
unlike the earlier attempts with NASA's Opportunity
That would be the Mars Odyssey, not Opportunity.

Where was Linux in 1998?
In the pub! Of course...
Funny, I found something like this today while looking for a new video card: Mauppauge MVP
It's $99, can play MP3, MPEG 1 + 2 and can plug into the TV. If they could just add battery power and an optical drive it would be perfect.
As a plus, it even runs Linux.
implementation of (the open standard) AAC
It's only open if you have money to pay for licenses and/or lawyers. AAC like many compression technologies is a patent minefield.
Shame, cause it's rather good.

The US beat Europe to Mars in the 1960s. I can't see why it would make headlines in 2004!
This is what I was thinking! If it had been a race, it was over long ago.
Is it just me or does the media have an obsession with pretending there was a race between the US and Europe to land on Mars? The BBC certainly has!
....
"US beats Europe to Mars" was the text they had onscreen at one point. Very annoying. I expected more from them. I really gotta stop doing that
Read his journal. He hides nothing.
Uh-oh, your right!
Shame we can't send these people to Mars. Or better yet, Venus!
Toasty!
during it's cruse
*hides from the APC*

You can get the full quality version of these images and more here.
Great stuff so far! The landscape seems a lot flatter than where Pathfinder landed.

Everytime I try to imagine it passing through the tail I keep hearing the theme to Deep Space 9!
Good luck to it! I hope it has better luck than some of the other probes that have encountered comets. It's quite a nasty environment!
Return of the Mac? Mark Morrison is singing again?!
Noooooo!!!!

The killing in the article is accidental. Killing an animal for no other reason than to eat it is cruel and wrong.
Luckily these are not solar panels.
These birds are going back into the ecosystem as food for other animals so it's not quite as bad as burning old animals (fossel fuels).
I have an ogg of that here. 672k big.
:-)
256k line, go easy
Beagle2 where are you!
