My brother in law always gets me BestBuy gift cards for the holidays. So since my bd is around this time of year to I normally end up with a couple of them. While shopping around I was going though the DVD section and saw all sorts of great deals. DVDs for ~15 USD and many even closer to ~11 USD. While some did get a little more costly they were all very reasonable for what they gave. A movie, which was produced at a rather high cost on average, some bonus material that is always fun to have, and lastly the knowladge that even though the silly DSS is there the quality of both the sound and picture will be quite good.
Then I was looking around in the music area and the prices were at least +5 to +10 dollars on average higher than the DVDs! And some of the albums that they were selling for clost to 20 USD were quite old. Many had to actually come on 2 CDs due to the size. Also, while for the majority of the CDs I saw there was no real protection on them, the quality could be kind of iffy depending on the metholigy they used to make it. (AAD, ADD, DDD. Thanks for not telling us anymore!)
So, after a bit of thought I game up with a few generalizations. I can buy a DVD with more content, the knowladge that this movie at some point had a lot of cash sunk into it (At least as much as it would take to record an album.), more than likely some extra stuff, and on average a better price. The only bad part is the DSS and the region but whatever. They are pretty trival to overcome if you care that much.
On the other hand I can buy a CD that is old tech, for typically more money, of questionable quality sometimes, but with no real protection to speak of.
Now maybe each respective orgnization can do a survay of what is right and wrong about each diffrent model and figure out how exist without continueally pissing people off but of the two I choose the lesser evil, the MPAA, as being able to survive. The RIAA is wayyyyy to far behind in the game to even come close to pulling their heads out of the sand.
1. Wait for someone that has written a lot of good stuff dies. 2. Buy the rights to dead persons stuff. 3. Churn out something that may or may not even be close to what said dead person would have invisioned but since they are dead you don't have to care! 4. Profit!
I know I know, there is an extra step in there. Well, we are talking about writeing arn't we?
After taking a quick peek at the language part of the project it seems right now that most of it's functions are all about sets of data and how to move them around.
Makes sence of course as that is what a GPU is all about. (Yes I'm vastly over-simplyifying here.) So I would gather that it might be used for types of data that are streamed alot? Maybe used for video editing, real time video, etc where your trying to deal with a lot of data at once that your trying to move around and not just store or have to perform some more complicated types of functions upon.
However, I'm no 3d programmer and I should would love a more detailed analysis of the potentals for this.
Well when you consider the # of lawyers that are allready currently in practice with the # of those that have the potental, ie pass the bar, you can arrive at that staggering number.
I guess I pulled a bit of a/. trick by making my post seem more than what it was, but again when you understand how many lawyers we have allready, think politics alone, and how many the law schools who eat a very good number of collage grads (And while that number may be low as you point out, think about how many BS students then go on to law school. I know personally the law school on my campus was very large, and very very nice.) you can start to see how lawyers have become the prefered profession of those who don't excel at math and or chemistry and want to still try to make a lot of money.
there are, however, things that many people overlook---on both sides of the issue. the company may benefit from a precise tracking system so they can ensure their customers are receiving satisfactory service. customer satisfaction can obviously work in favor of the company in the form of more revenue. more revenue can mean more jobs or higher wages.
Normally when revinues are up the 1st thing that happens is raises for the execs, more perks for said execs, some more of the same equipment so that they can ensure that the draconion policies can be enforced, and then maybe, just maybe if there is any money left over, a few new jobs and a token raise.
I'd like to make a point about NWN and it's expansions from the builders/server admins point of view.
When I made my mod I wanted to make a fun balanced place for those who had NWN to play. I think I did a pretty good job of that and many a player has had fun slaying dragons and such so I think I succeded in that regard. However...
Then they released SoU. Not only did they make it very hard for the people who had NWN mods to edit any of the scripts that were now included in SoU unless you made your server SoU only, but even if you kept your module in NWN mode both NWN and SoU players could join and play. Needless to say the SoU players had a great advantage as they had more spells, feats, and classes to use. The balance in my mod was totally disrupted and even though I was able to fix some of the things that SoU broke, I simply was not willing to put the time in again to rebalance my module. (Would have requried many many hours of testing and tweaking.)
Now, with HoU the rules have changed again and rather drasticly. More new spells, feats, classes, and last but not least levels beyond 20.
The time and effort that I would have to put into making my mod even playable by everyone would be staggering let alone the thought of rebalancing the encounters and quests.
It appears the way that BioWare has chosen to impliment the xpacks has made it such that they can't impliment a disallow SoU/HoU players from using the features that they give the game but it is a great dissapointment to me. After nearly a year of hosting I'm quite sure that I will soon be forced to pull down my servers as HoU players come online and upset the balance.
NWN is an amazing game. I would not have put so much time and effort into making a mod had I not liked the idea of it, but after watching SoU trash my module and now HoU ready to blow it out of the water I'm a little sad.
People have been trying to sell me on this for years. But you know what, I'm not buying it.
The GNP reflects the product as the US as a whole, not what the goverment produces. The goverment itself is responsable for printing and mantaining the money supply but does that not mean that they should simple be able to barrow on what is my work because they feel it will be in my best intrest without asking.
While this is a republic, and many socialiast aspects of other govements have taken a hold here it does not follow that they govement should be allowed to use the GNP, a product of it's citizans work -- not it's work, as a credit rateing as to what it should be allowed to barrow on.
And why is that? Well it's because the intrest rate and debt have been spireling out of control for years now. Imageing what our GNP would be like if we did not have to be constanly paying intrest on what our goverment was doing. What if our goverment was able to balance it's books.
The idea of living with a constant debt may appeal to some people, but not to me. I don't mind paying my taxes, too much, because I'm hopeing they are being used for a greater good. However when I have to figure that at least part of those taxes are going to an intrest rate that I never agreed upon simply beacuse the goverment thought it was best that we give the money to Halliburton and military contracters to seddle an old score for daddy.
We are allowed to barrow so much money based on the credit rateing that our nations GNP provides, but it does not follow that it is the correct thing to do. And, such as it is, since we decided to go in an muck up the middle east and now have to pay to fix it back up (Something I'm not entirely confidient that we can do regardless of how much money we throw away over there.) the prospect of spending more money on some idea that has been hashed over for years? This smells of political manovering of the worst sort, something this adminstation has been doing all along and the stench of it is making me sick.
Meh, not totally true. The myth about geeks that don't know anything about sports has it's roots in fact but like many things is more that than anything else. Just a myth.
Allthough I do agree with you about one thing. A 1d20 roll could only help the BCS at this point.
Yes. They have done a good job of replaying a lot of shows that have fallen off (Sometimes for very inexplicable reasons.) other networks.
Family Guy, Futurama, Mission Hill, and even that weird one the Oblongs. All good stuff. (And I would argue that the 1st 3 should still be in production today!)
Oh, and I do know that it is Cowboy Beebop. Heh, and I even previewed.
I know Taco loves his Anime but I'd also just like to send a big shout out to Cartoon Network for the great stuff they have been doing with the other part of Adult Swim.
The new SpaceGoasts CTC have been great as well as all of the other ones. (Sealab2021, ATHF, Brak Show)
Even after the death of Harry Goz (1932 - 2003),voice of Captin Murphy on Sealab 2021, the show has bounced back imo and did a good new ep.
Thanks Cartoon Network. I'm not a big fan of Anime (Cowboy Beebob as one of the BIG exceptions.) but you still have given me a reason to stay up late every night.
Wait.. I had a point.. We get to see beer being drunk on TV in England.
Actually we do too. (Think Cheers. I think George Wendt said in one interview that he wasn't just drinking colored water thoughout all those eps.) Just not in our commercials. Go figure.
While what the orignal poster said has merit, how is it any diffrent than the spin that you see in print or say FOX News?
All media puts spin on things. If you want to get the news "unfiltered" in this day and age you better consider becoming a reporter or...heck I don't even know what else to say.
While still not a graphical installer (and the article does a good job of explaining why that's not a priority)...
Who ever said we needed a graphical installer? There is absolutly nothing wrong with a good text installer. And for installing small footprint it's always best.
And besides, this is the logical progression. First you do the text installer, then you move on to a graphical installer if you so desire. Not the other way around.
A very good point. Whenever I hire for a job that does not really require a lot of skills or a set of skills that is such that I'm pretty sure the person is/will be qualified for I then hire for personality rather than qualifactions.
For example, when hireing for any sort of help desk or customer relations (even if it requires tech knowladge) I look for someone with an outgoing personality who enjoys speaking with people. Even if they are lacking in tech skills or don't know software package X as good as someone else, you simply can't teach personality and have it stick.
Flip that over and think about hireing for someone in accounting. There I think a little more of a subdued personality fits in better with the number crunchers.
Oh, and btw. Do most of your really insightful comments not get modded up too? Yeah, sadly so.
I remember getting a really 'sexy' spim message one time while I was away, my dad nearlly grounded me thinking it was someone I knew that I cybered with.:(
As the AC allready pointed out, wth is up with your dad that he is going to punish you for something like that?
You didn't say how old you are but if you have a cell phone and know how to use the shift key and periods even you seem old enough to me to be able to "cyber" a bit. Course back in my day all our dads had to do was look the other way when we snuck his Playboys and such.
...that they run the risk of sounding like they're accusing corporate Linux licensees of incompetence...
Agreeded. I walked into a local shop one time to find a new mobo. This little shop that just turned a profit for the owners I'm thinking. It looked good, but good brick and mortar pretty is costly. And what came next I'm quite sure proved me right.
Anyway, I needed a new mobo for an AMD boxen. No prob, I mean I use whatever CPU depending on what the customer wants. I prefer AMD for it's performance for cost ratio but thats just me.
So I ask the guy for a new mobo and the 1st question he asked me is what CPU did I have? I said an AMD 1800+ and he said something to the effect that oh, they don't even stock anything AMD. They consider them an inferior part and not worthy of being in any computer.
My mind went blank. This guy is some po-dunk computer store. AMD has taken on Intel and, well we will see how it all turns out but damn, they have done more than this guy could ever invision in his wildest dreams. I simply walked out at that point. He was not even pretending to use logic, he was just some marketdroid that had been programed.
Lest to say, I found a better local retailer who has a more even head but the fact that that kind of mindset can flurish still befounds me.
Dude, just do it. I want you do to it. CowboyNeal wants you do do it. Heck, I bet even Billy boy himself secretly chuckels at the thought of people using it.
The real issue, however, seems to be this guys ISP. I mean honestly, what the hell is wrong with them? If I had called Speakeasy with this sort of problem, it would have been taken care of that day.
Exactly, what kind of 2 bit ISP is he dealing with anyway? Why when this happened did he not instantly start shopping around and then demand to speak with a manager and tell them that unless they got a clue about the diffrences between protocals that he was leaving?
I'm gonna mod his ISP as -1 Clueless and him -1 You Need To Get More Pissed At Clueless People.
And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.
But someone had to sign them. The feds are normally pretty anal about that kinda stuff.
Naturally he would not wish to be the one to sign a false earnings statements.
Who was the poor sap that they found to sign those statments?
A decent webserver it would seem. /.ed even on a Saturday. Ouch.
