And what about the possabilities for fraud? You are teased with some form of header that you are intrested in and then go on to click though the artical. Meanwhile the "micropayment" has gone from $0.01 per click to $0.50 with micro-fine print at the bottom of the page informing of you so. (Or none at all.)

The idea of micropayments is nice in theory but there are many pitfalls that must be fleshed out before I see myself ever using such a thing.

While don't get me wrong, $250,000 is a lot of money. If MS was really serious about this they should invest about 10x that into either a) going though all of their code with many many coders and stomping out every bug hole they can find even if it is at the expense of some "features" or b) offer that much up as a bounty.

Either way, if your MS with pockets full of cash this seems more like a PR stunt (aka cheap way) to try and fix their problems than any real type of effort.

But even then you face the reality that the system is rigged for the status quo. The more power you want, the more the system beat you down, in various ways: having to go though countless background checks that will expose every little detail of your life (By goverment officals who are currently in power who you intend to knock down and the press.), you must be very very rich in order to run for office without any backing and even then who wants to waste their money on something you might end up loseing anyway thus you give in and accept money from special intrest groups who then "own" you, and of course lets not forget when/if all that fails your opponents will simply out and out lie about you and your family if you are deemed enough of a theat to their intrests.

So then you say, ok lets band together! Strength in numbers and all that. But that's a problem because then you have many many viewpoints to represent and geeks tend to be well informed about things so it's not like joe sixpack who you can gloss over with a few platatudes. No, you will have to carefully weigh each viewpoint and even then if you explain exactly why you chose to do x instead of y some will still get pissed off and either drop their support or defect and work against you just out of spite!

I mean just the thought of all that makes me very ill, and then to have to go though it? It is of course not impossable but at this point in the game where we still have the "illusion of freedom" it will be very improbable.

Witness just about any marital argument and listen to what each side is shouting. You will generally be hearing people describing themselves very accurately, and mischaracterizing the other accordingly as they seek to pin the accusation on the other.

And to my sad dismay, Fox seeminly upped the anti by making Fox News the loudest and most "flashy" 24 hour news there is. You used the word extreme and I think it applys to all aspects of what modern media has done to many aspects of what we know of as media. Yes, there are many outlets of media that don't scream, mischaracterize, and or out and out lie often but they tend to get drounded out with this new tactic: Scream your spin the loudest and hope that you get heard above the noise, or better yet are the only noise that can be heard.

We see this in other aspects of our meida as well, big budget pictures are expected and when they don't perform well due to a bad plot, bad acting, bad casting, etc there is much finger pointing about who did what wrong rather than just accepting that maxing out on volume is not always the key to success.

Diddo the RIAA. Their buisness plan exists such that they must have control of what content is dilvered to the masses. Rather than accepting that change was on the horizen they ignored it and when things did change they now are shouting at the top of their collective lungs, you must ONLY listen to our music! (Yes, a strech but hey, it's only /.)

I personally watch maybe 30 mins of TV news a week, and that is mostly when I'm subjected to it by others. I find that it has decended into nearly pure brainwashing tactics with the same messages repeated over and over and over in self rightious tones that almost reach out of the TV and knock me over the head. And since all that glass window does is tell me what it thinks I never can get the sadsifacation of giving it any good wacks back. Print news can be as bad in a diffrent way but it's much easier to filter out the dreck and put it down if it simply becomes too much.

Why oh why does such drivel even get published!? Now, don't anwser that. Thats a whole other can of worms and we might as well try to stay on topic here.

I own no less than 3 Palms and have keyboards for 2 of them. (I can plug any of them into the 2 keyboards but you get the idea.) The 2 IIIc's I have are getting a little long in the tooth but they still function pretty well. My 550c is a little more modern but it still could use an upgrade too even.

Also let me throw in here that I do have a laptop as well as the number of computers on my home network to use so I'm pretty much covered when it comes to computing in all it's forms.

Now, having said that, let me also now say that I've been in the market for a new cell phone too and while the little ones that are PDAs are neat, they could never replace my PDAs for a few reasons:

    1. As has been pointed out in this thread a few times, I would not be able to access my PDA very easily if I was using my phone. I can see how that would get old real quick.
    2. If I'm using my PDA/Phone I'm using up charge on it. If my PDA dies it's not a huge deal but it does not effect my ability to make a call.
    3. While some of the new PDA/Phones have decent sized screens they still are always smaller than a full sized PDA. They rarely offer much in the way of stylus room and no, I don't want my phone to get bigger.
    4. I've not looked that hard but I don't think very many of them come with the keyboard option. If they do, well thats cool that would remove this point but I'm pretty sure that the majority of them don't and even if only that is true it would limit my available list of phones that I would be willing to buy.

In short, I'm not sure I can even understand why anyone would think that any "tool" would "die". They may adapt and evolve but I think that PDAs serve a market that is quite diffrent than a cell phone. Cell phones may incorpirate some of the features that are on PDAs but they really are two diffrent things as far as I'm concerned.

(Side note, the one thing that I have been thinking about is the camera phones. While the image quality is not great it would be neat to be able to just carry a phone/camera. It would not be a subistute for a real digital camera but I don't always need one of those on me. And using a camera is not the same as trying to use a phone and a PDA at the same time.)

While I don't know if I'd rate Quicktime as terrable or anything worse than poor, but it def was not written with anything in mind other than trying to show Windows users how much better Mac apps can be.

But I think this actually is a departure for Apple. They *want* people to use this software and not have to clickthough "Upgrade to Quicktime Pro Now!" Rather use it and maybe buy the iPod, then maybe think about a Mac.

I think it's a good move for Apple as they have really improved the quality of their OS and hardware over time whereas MS and it's coharts at the x86 factorys still seem to still be in "blob" mode.
