Reading the article, and then reading the comments and sub-comments, this article has brought out the debate on the declining civil liberties of the US and what freedoms ARE or ARE NOT guaranteed by the US Constition. There's several comments from citizens of non-US countries who point out instances where their country is more "free" than the US, and then sub-comments pointing out counter-examples of said person's country NOT being "free". So, in summary I feel that many/most countries have some freedoms and do not have some freedoms.

What I want is the opinion of the slashdot community, on what country they feel is the most "free" with freedoms that the slashdot crowd is interested in. If a citizen of the US was going to move and try to gain citizenship in another country, what country should it be?

  5. We expect free binaries due to Quake on Loki Games Closing? · · Score: 1

I'm not surprised that Loki got many emails from linux users wanting free binaries so they could play their windows copies of games under Linux. It's what the linux community learned to expect from Id Software, who developed Quake. I'm not saying that this excuses this behavior, but at least it explains it. When Id Software released Quake, Quake2, Quake3, and now Return to Wolfenstein for linux they've always released a free copy of the binaries for linux that would work with the data files from the purchased windows copy of the game. The reason, of course, why they were able to do this was that Id Software does the development in house, costing only development time. Where as Loki had to buy the rights to the game costing both license and development time.

  11. Nintendo & Microsoft have different interests on Microsoft to Introduce GBA-competitor? · · Score: 2, Informative

I see no evidence that Nintendo is interested in anything other than TV and handheld game machines. They are not interested in DVD's, MP3's, the web or other multimedia/general computing unlike Microsoft. Granted, Microsoft has dipped it's feet in the game industry with the X-Box, but everyone who's reviewed it has something negative to say and with good reason.
Microsoft focused on the fastest processor, most amount of memory, lots of storage (for caching and game saves) which is important in the computer market but not necessarily in the game market. Console Game players are interested in the playability/funness factor of a game over the graphics/specs of the game. Take Halo (Xbox) for example, it's nice looking and could be lots of fun, but it just screams for a mouse and keyboard. It needs lots of buttons (all the time) and it needs a FPS movement that only a mouse in "mouselook" mode can really deliver on. Where as if you look at Luigi's Mansion (GameCube) you use very few controls (all the time) and it's movement is very natural for a "gamepad" controller, it would not be natural for a keyboard and mouse. Microsoft's mistake is taking what they know about computers and trying to apply that to a console, whereas Nintendo has been in business since 1951 and started selling video games in 1971, in that tine they have learned a thing or two about making a fun, playable game. This is one market Microsoft will NOT dominate in.

  13. Re:Using PCs to *route* gigabit ethernet? on Apartments for Techies? · · Score: 1

I agree, sorry if my comment was mis-understood. The idea is to use a gigabit switch for apt-to-apt connections and a linux router for outbound traffic going to the ISP. I would not dream of using a PC as a gigabit switch, just think how many PCI slots you'd need for an apt complex!!
Also, I really don't think the IP's will be a problem, it really just depends on the ISP. For example, my ISP sells a high speed DSL package with 30 IPs. The apartment complex I live in has only 20 apts. For those wondering why we wouldn't use NAT, it's because it's really not fair to the apt tenant, some software does not work behind a NAT/Firewall or can only work if the firewall forwards a specific port to a specific IP; but with everyone having their own IP everyone can do anything they want.

A friend of mine who just moved to Virginia, is planning on doing just that. He going to purchase an apartment complex (his family has lots of money) and outfit it to be geek friendly. He's planning on running gigabit ethernet to every apt for apt-to-apt networking and use highspeed ADSL with several static IPs (one for each apt) for outbound internet access. Then start playing with video-on-demand and other cool technologies on his apt complex as a testbed for others. Once he gets it right he'll start outfitting other apartment complexes for other realtors. Of course he'll be using Linux and FreeBSD for just about everything from the router to the "apt game servers" and video on demand servers.
