Heh, yeah... I saw it a third time yesterday at a matinee (that should make my feelings on the film clear), and the woman in the row behind me says "What a shitty ending!". Every single person around her then attempted to explain that it was based on books, and would be continued...
Actually, when DES was first released, there was quite a bit of scepticism about its integrity. The S-tables were thought to have been chosen to make the algorithm easy to break for someone who knew the secret. Furthermore, the NSA completely gimped DES by forcing IBM to use 8 bits of the key for parity checking, which was completely unnecessary. The only thing it did was shorten the key.
This is what many people fail to understand about Notes; it is primarily a database application. Many people use it solely for email, and then complain about it. The one thing that I like very much about Lotus Notes is that users have the ability to easily build their own custom views in order to look at the data however they want. This keeps the database creator/maintainer from having to do it for them.
That's okay, the trailer sucked anyway. It was 45 seconds of Darth-vader like breathing with brief, meaningless 2-second clips; no dialogue, no music, nothing. The clips were generic, and didn't really excite me.
Is this the industry that will push Linux onto the Desktop?
Probably not. This is a very specialized industry, and will remain so. Simply because Linux is popular in rendering CGI does not mean that my grandmother will start using it; after all, she only has to render CGI once every couple of months.
But seriously, most of this stuff has traditionally been done on a *nix variant anyway (mostly IRIX, IIRC). These are people who are used to using *nix, and know that it can get the job done. Getting corporate users to use Linux as a desktop environment is a whole different ballgame.
Mmm... Fagan reviews are so much fun. On the plus side, they do catch quite a few errors. That's what I have to keep telling myself in order to endure the pain.
Hmm... apparently you didn't read the article that carefully, since Linux is only mentioned for Student home PCs in the University example... they were using Solaris as the Unix OS.
What was the last version of window you installed?
Actually, it was Win2K, and you still have to create partitions within the setup program, just as you do in a typical Linux install. God forbid if you're trying to install 95/98; you have to use fdisk, which, AFAIC, is much less user-friendly thana RH or Mandrake install.
I use Windows Media Player with Wine to watch my...uh...Multimedia Presentations. It really does a decent job with AVI files. I have only tested it with the older non-"themeable" release of Media Player.
I've found that mplayer does a really good job of playing mpeg/avi/divx files in Linux.
My first experiences with Mandrake were not good. It destroyed my Windows partition without warning. (fortunately I had a backup, but this was hardly a user-friendly thing to do).
Installing Windows isn't much easier... you still have to create/delete partitions; I have had very good luck setting up friends with Mandrake. Most recently, I set up three friends who live in a house together with a network running Mandrake 8.1 on most of the systems; this distro is very, very nice. Easy to use for newbies, but still configurable for those who know what they're doing. I am very impressed with the hardware support, as well - it even worked out of the box with my Samsung ML-1210 laser printer, which was a gigantic pain in the ass to set up manually even with Samsung's directions.
I think that this new gaming distribution is a step in the right direction for Linux. The only way that Linux will gain market share as a desktop OS is to cater to desktop users needs. Gamers are a large part of desktop users, probably the largest segment other than business users. The beauty of Free Software is that you can specialize distributions towards different segments very easily.
[MySQL / PostgreSQL / Interbase] is [better / worse] than [MySQL / PostgreSQL / Interbase] because it [has / doesn't have] [row-level locking / transactions / foreign keys / large [development/user] base]
In all honesty, why can't people just realize that competition is a good thing? Instead of having one database that tries to be all things for all people, the Open Source Community has several database applications available; choose whatever best suits your needs!
Actually, my Senator replied to me via e-mail regarding a letter wrote regarding the DMCA and Dmitry Sklyarov; I actually submitted his response as a story earlier today, but it was rejected... I thought it was pretty interesting.
Do you think their will be more terrorists against USA if USA give money to the poor or if they bomb a country?
That's the problem... it doesn't matter what we do, the terrorists will still regard the U.S. as "The Great Satan". The only way to stop this is to make it so that no country in the world will harbor and support terrorism.
You need to realize that whether or not there was a response to Sept. 11, further attacks would almost certainly be forthcoming. If someone kicked you square in the nuts (sorry, assuming you are male... if not, pretend you have nuts), would you just lie there and not respond? Perhaps if you just laid there holding your balls, they would go away...
Unfortunately, the people who committed this atrocity would not just go away. They would continue kicking you while you were on the ground. Your only hope of not being kicked to death would be to stand up and give them such a beating that they wouldn't try anything like this ever again.
Remember that each day 35000 people die from hunger or poverty in the world, and that's the fault of USA, G8 and WTO. Fix those problem first, and terrorism will disappear.
Whoa there, sparky... you're painting with a pretty broad brush, don't you think? I really don't think that every single person in the world who dies from starvation or hunger is dying because the "USA, G8 and WTO" are going out of their way to kill them. It's no one's fault that they can't supply food for themselves, and who said it was our responsibility to help them?
The US already supplies lots of humanitarian aid all over the world, but I guess that's not enough. The socialist protesters won't be happy until we feed every starving person in the world, at the expense of our own citizens and economy. Why don't you crawl back under whatever rock you came from, because you are obviously too biased against "big business" and "evil governments" to participate in a debate on the subject.
On a side note, the University that I attend had several teach-ins and discussions on the terrorist acts. The members of the "Students and Faculty for Global Peace and Justice" were the most poorly behaved and illogical people I have ever encountered. Whenever a dissenting viewpoint was put forward, they would all boo and hiss, refusing to even acknowledge that another viewpoint might be valid. Why is it that the people who espouse "peace and understanding" seem to be the people who refuse to listen or accept a differing point of view? People like this make me sick. They are the same as the people who committed the acts of Sept. 11th; unwilling to accept that any other point of view could contain a modicum of truth: their truth is the one and only truth.

Do they make them in Essex Junction Vermont?
I do know that there is a PowerPC team here in Essex, but I'm not sure if they were involved with the design of the Power4 (I would assume that they were).
As far as I can recall (it's been a while), they entrusted the ring to Frodo because he was innocent - of all of them, he would be the least tempted to use the ring for himself and become the new Dark Lord. Also, a huge force of elven cavalry headed into Mordor would attract Sauron's attention, and he would then use all his power to wrest the ring from them. The Fellowship's only hope lay in secrecy and speed. Sauron could not know that the ring had even been found until the instant it was destroyed. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out that way - Smeagol alerted him to the fact that the ring was still around, and so Frodo and company were hounded by the Nine for much of their journey.

Exactly... the shells are made from depleted Uranium, which is heavy and will shred things very nicely; it is not, however, radioactive. This is just FUD being spread by the "Help the poor Iraqi children" foundations of the world. I mean, really. I'm sorry that these kids have no medical supplies and no food, but it is certainly not the fault of the US. People need to realize that the Iraqi government brought this down on itself, as will the Taliban (if Bin Laden is indeed confirmed as the one behind these attacks).
I can respect your opinion, but you said it yourself - you are not a US citizen. So, really, there's no way you can possibly know how people living in the US feel right now. I doubt very much that you would have the same feelings if something like this happened in your country (wherever that may be). If you would indeed feel the same, then you're a bigger man than I. I think everybody's first reaction will indeed be to annihilate whoever was responsible. I have no problem with this whatsoever - hunt them down, root and branch, and eradicate them. Just be absolutely certain that they are, indeed, the correct people.
I'm sorry, but that's way too vague to make any sense at all. How could anyone call DC or New York "the City of God" - I'm sick of all these new-age hippie bastards who wet their pants every time something happens that can be contorted to almost fit one of Nostradamus' ridiculous "prophecies". There are serious events in motion without letting stupid superstitions get in the way.

I believe this is because the rating system also takes into account the number of people who rated the movie.

I would recommend Dark Age of Camelot over Everquest any day! I just got this game a few weeks ago, and it's incredible!
