No, being a parent is no picnic, and the anonymity of the internet doesn't make it any easier, even for those of us parents who do know a thing or two about the internet. Fortunately for all those childless know-it-alls out there, it still is pretty easy to just say "If only parents would, well, PARENT".
Oh please. Allow me to display my "parent with a child" card and disagree. This "solution" isn't going to fix anything. As you said, you can't monitor your kid everywhere, and if they want to view porn or create a MySpace page when they are over at a friends house then they will. But if you have done your parenting in the past, including monitoring internet usage at home and teaching them about the dangers (and benefits) of the internet, they will probably make the right choices. There's no sure things in this life, and kids will still screw up, but parents being involved and actually parenting makes a huge difference.
Indeed. If nothing else, they have The Office (both versions) available for streaming.
My only complaint about the streaming service, being an Anime guy, is the inability to pick which language I get to listen to. In general the streaming is great, if low quality, and "free". It's the reason I finally killed my excellent but uncompetitive Greencine subscription.
Am I the only one who's never been bothered by the uncanny valley effect? Having grown up on video games I can't say I've ever experianced this supposedly common phenomenon, or had any friends say "gee, that's creepy". Actually, I always sort of assumed only older folk felt it.:-)
USAA my friend... if you qualify to be a member that is. They have no ATMs themselves, but they pay you back for any fees you get charged, up to certin limits. Every ATM is free for me.:-)

The Solaris software is of proven quality and at least equal or better then Linux and the open source model will assure that it stays up there.
Even giving him the first half of his argument (which is debatable), just becasue an OS is open source doesn't mean it's going to grow as fast as Linux. Leadership and general community interest is a HUGE part of the picture. Hurd anyone?
Sun with Solaris has already a large installed base and by becoming free and open source there is no reason for existing Solaris users to switch to Linux.
Ah I see, so being open source is the only edge that Linux has over the competition. Hmmmm.
Sun has a proven reputation in terms of quality of support. This should be at least as good or better then that of the Linux supporters.
I can't really speak to this, never worked with Sun's support.
Because Sun by default is the only designated party managing the open source software, there will be no risk of a version bonanza with multiple incompatible versions.
I think this is much a negative as a positive. "Becasue Sun is by default the only designated party managing the open source software, you might be stuck with what they think is best." After all we know Sun has a great track record with managing semi-open projects in the past, right? (Java...)
Man, when I worked in customer service it seemed much higher....
Best Buy still sucks though. It's important to be able to say "the customer is always right" and look like you believe it, admiting you are trying to "fire" customers is bad form.
I really can't understand arguments like the one OSNews makes. If people hate the interface then they hate the interface. Saying, "No! You can't hate the interface becasue it's right! You're all worng! You really like it!" just seems, well, silly. What's next, "Why Users Find Spinach Disgusting" telling us why we should really all find spinach to be tasty?
Aye, that link is commercial flights. Not only are you a bit of an ass, but you are also wrong- NASA does not buy insurance on scientific missions. COMMERCIAL payloads on NASA missions are insured, however.
For actual facts you can see this or this or even this.
When you live in a tiny one-bedroom in Boston with a wife you don't have friends over- you have a friend over, and you like it!:-)
In all seriousness, I have no doubt I'd buy a TV if I had a big place that could handle guests. I wouldn't get cable, a Tivo, etc, but there's no denying you need a TV for some social activities.
Of corse they can, but I suggest that one, I won't have to sit through a bunch of ads, two, I have total control over what I watch, when I watch, and three, you can't just "flip on" a DVD, you have to go get it, so less watching "just because".
Just get rid of the TV. I've been TV-less for a few years now, and I really don't miss it. I get all my news on-line, I can watch DVDs on my fairly-large computer screen, and all the quality TV series come out on DVD these days, so for those (very few) shows I can pick them up too. Who needs a TV?
No you can't blame them... if they make their rules clear. You can blame them, though, for having vague or secret caps, and advertising as if there are no caps.

"it was only a 727-200, but they let me go into the cockpit.."
FYI, JetBlue does not fly any Boeing aircraft. You were prob on an A320.
I love PDX too. I've never seen a used book store in any other airport in the US.

And thanks to the magic of Inflation, the cost is about the same, despite the price change.
:-)
You're saying that thanks to inflation 2 cents today is worth the same as 10 cents in the 80s? I think you'd better go brush up on your economics.

You are assuming there are only two states, cool and not cool. Don't be so binary. :-)

See #2, #4. The usage is correct.
Problem is the Test would be something like:

1)True or False: The CIA loves you and has your best interests at heart.
2)True or False: I voted for GWB in the last election.
3)....
And "False" answers would no doubt be a failure for the exam taker.

Linus: Oh I don't know. Doesn't really matter. I just like to code.

This is true. It doesn't bother me, and I don't really talk about TV with my friends, but YMMV.
Well if you live in an apartment like mine you can watch your monitor just fine whille relaxing on the couch. :-)

As for the DVD zoning, its primarly based on picture ratios...
Eh? I think he's talking about DVD region codes, which have nothing to do with picture ratios (or NTSC vs PAL vs SECAM for that matter).
from the journals-are-for-girls dept.
:-)
Huh? I always thought it was diaries that were for girls... at least, that's what I told my friends when they made fun of my journal.
