I got to work one day and my monitor was flashly strangely, and my PC was off. I couldn't get it to work, so I started poking around. I ended up sitting on the floor, with it on my lap (not the smartest thing to do, in hindsight), and turned it on.

    Click.
    Click.
    Click.
    BOOM!

So the power supply blew with it in my lap. My co-workers claimed I jumped a few inches up in the air when it went.

It turned out that someone bumped an improperly-wired pack pole (sp?) and it put 240V through my cube's outlets. It also fried my portable CD player (yes, this was quite a few years ago). At least my employer replaced that.

I have had the same experience: my wife never understood my early-morning fog for a long time, and I got a lot of grief over my inability to wake up for much of anything (crying babies, pagers, etc.).

In fact, she feels that she should be paid for when I'm on call, since she's the one who has to wake up to the pager, in order to wake me up, since I'll sleep right through both a pager beeping or a phone ringing.

And don't even get me started on my experiences with alarm clocks...

  5. My Early Morning Experience on Study: Waking Up Like Being Drunk · · Score: 2, Interesting

When I first wake up in the morning, I feel like someone has taken a baseball bat and nailed me in the back of the head with it. This is related to some serious headache issues I have, but it leads me to something else.

My cognitive abilities upon waking are nearly non-existent: I've been known to slur words and been unable to string together a coherent sentence.

My physical abilities aren't much better: I've fallen down the stairs, walked into doors, and walked into walls.

What's scary is that for years I've been on call for various employers (ISPs mostly). When that pager goes off and I have to wake up and troubleshoot a problem, just getting to my office downstairs can be dangerous. Then trying to "rev up" my brain to work on the problem can take a long time. You should talk to some of my coworkers who've called me in the middle of the night for help with a problem - I'm sure that the conversation sounded like one with a person who has been drinking heavily.

I have no difficulty at all in believing that waking up makes some people so groggy that their abilities are no better than those of someone who is drunk. And when that person needs to make decisions with serious consequences, that is not a good thing.

I agree the request to not ruin the story. I had never heard of this story until last year, when I found it and bought it as a special story for my two young (6 and 3) sons.

We enjoyed reading the story, and I feel it really hit home with my older son, who seems to be growing nearer that time when he will ask the question "Does Santa Claus really exist?"

When I first saw the trailer for the movie, I recognized it as being based on the book (before the title appeared), and even seeing the trailer has disappointed me. Why did they have to take such a nice, simple, touching story, and add a lot of extraneous story? Would this not have been an excellent project for a short film?

My older son asks about seeing the movie, and I don't know if I want to, for fear of it ruining the charm of the book. The Lord of the Rings was translated (finally) to the screen well, but I fear that this movie just won't cut it.

I agree with the observation that Home Depot leaves items outdoors without overt monitoring, but I have to disagree with including Walmart in it.

Whenever I enter a Walmart store, the greeters make attempts to apply stickers to any bags I may be carrying. I guess they feel this will decrease the chances that I'll shoplift. It does, however, make me feel that they assume I'm going to start filling my bags with their merchandise if there's no sticker on my bag. So, they make me feel like a thief without any prior history of my being one.

As much as I prefer to buy many items from Walmart (given their prices), I end up being seen as an irritable sot who gives their greeters dirty looks whenever they try to apply their stickers. And I won't let them.

I've been nearly-creamed more times by someone lighting their smoke or trying to flick their ashes out the window that by people yakking on their phone. Smoking removes one hand from the wheel, but there's no ban on that!

What about eating a hamburger while driving? drinking a coffee?

There are so many ways that drivers can distract themselves (or be distracted), why focus on phones only?

On a side rant, why do most smokers now insist on a) throwing their ashses out the window (instead of in their ashtry), and b) throwing their butts out on the road/sidewalk? If I were to throw a coffee cup out the window, I'd probably end up with a ticket. Throw a cigarette out the window many times a week - no problem!

It's a little-remembered fact that LotR is indeed six books, with two per printed book.

The Rohan woman was Eowyn. She did indeed kill the Nazgul lord, after he (and his flying beast) had landed on Theoden (the King of Rohan) and his horse, and was getting ready for a feast.

Sauron did not have a general. The Nazgul were important, but held no such rank, nor was there a heirarchy. Gothmog was the Lieutenant of Sauron, and that's about it.

Sauron did indeed work for Morgoth, aka Melkor.
