  5. Re:Agreed... on iTMS Sells 100,000,000th Song · · Score: 1

Seriously, how does it NOT interfere? Music from iTunes is only playable using proprietary software. If you want it portable you can only get an iPod to listen to it. There are a lot of companies that make MP3 players besides Apple.

It uses the software I was already using before the iTMS came online and it plays on the MP3 player I already owned before the iTMS store came online. I burn music CD's from my purchased songs to play in my car just like any other music CD. For me and apparently many others, it doesn't interfere.

The plans Scott used for his book are here. The plans are kind of old and busted (there's no link to them any more on my site) and I think the author did a great job.

The one thing in the book I'd like to build now is the MAMA game cabinet. I've got an old arcade Ms Pac-Man and it gets lots of use but I'd love to have a bunch of the old games in one stand-up cabinet.

  11. My own experience on Correct Way to Charge an iPod? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I'm no battery expert, I don't even play one on the internet, but I can relate my own experience as a true early adopter.

I've got a 5 gig iPod purchased in Nov 2001. I use it at least 6 hours+ every day at work. I rarely use it on weekends. When it's not in use, it is on the charger (the AC adaptor, not hooked to my computer) - always, no exceptions.

It's now 26 months old and as far as I can tell the battery is almost as good as new.

So, my secret to success in a nutshell:
    - almost never run it all the way down
    - use it on a very regular basis
    - always on the charger when not in use

Of course, YMMV but this has worked extremely well for me.

  17. Happened to me once on Executing a Mass Departmental Exodus in the Workplace? · · Score: 1

    And it sucked.

I was hired to manage the composition department for a print shop. I didn't know it when I was hired, but the department felt one of their own should have got the job. On my second day, the entire 1st shift (15 typesetters & proofers) staged a walkout. They marched into my boss's office while I was in meeting with him and announced they'd be back the next day and took a hike.

He (my boss) fired them all, even though I begged him not to. I canabalized the 2nd & 3rd shifts to fill the day shift and hired replacements, but a LOT of talent and experience went out the door and the company suffered for months because of it.

I would have liked a chance to win them over but didn't get it. In this instance, everyone was wrong and everyone was a loser. I hope I never am in that situation again on either side of the fence.
