Bottom line is kids say things about teachers they don't like. They always have and always will. Punishing them for exercising their freedom of speech will only cause further resentment towards the school and teachers which will result in more severe verbal bashing of the institution. Not surprisingly, the article doesn't mention what the teacher did that may have resulted in this type of reaction from the students.

  9. Re:Normally on Amazon Pulling Out of Texas Over $269 Million Tax Bill · · Score: 0

My point is it's a tax you choose to pay, it's not forced on you. It's only regressive for those middle class folks who choose to live beyond their means. You can be lower to median income and not buy new things. Don't buy new cars, don't buy new TVs and gadgets and gizmos and such. Under this method of taxation everyone pays as much tax as they are willing to pay since you can choose not to pay it. If it's entirely a voluntary tax it becomes a moot point who pays how much, but even considering that, actor in the taxes the rich will pay... Significantly more in dollars certainly, if not in percentage of income. Rich people buy more expensive things more expensive things while taxed at the same rate (perhaps 15% - 20%) will cost a lot more in taxes.

Income tax is essentially slavery. Slavery is ownership of your labor. Income tax is the assumption that government owns the fruit of your labor, and thus your time spent laboring to produce.

  10. Re:Normally on Amazon Pulling Out of Texas Over $269 Million Tax Bill · · Score: 0

I think a sales tax as the only tax could be a good idea. Do not tax necessities (food, clothes, etc.) so the truly poor don't have to pay taxes. Technically no one would have to pay taxes, but buying nice things, luxuries, etc. would be taxed at a heavy rate. No more income tax, no slavery as that is waht an income tax is... The presumption that government owns you as they own the fruits of your labor and allow you to keep wahtever percentage of it.

So yes, I think a relatively high adn flat sales tax would benefit all of us as well as help to keep government in check. If government overspends, people can decide to buy fewer luxuries, or buy used "not as nice" things instead in private party deals. People can truly vote with their wallet and not be enslaved under a system like this.

  12. Interesting... on How Chrysler's Battery-Less Hybrid Minivan Works · · Score: 0

I like this more so than the electric systems. It has promise of being a more simple and reliable system that's more cost effective. Seals wear out, hydraulic motors need rebuilding. The upside is hydraulics are generally pretty cheap and easy to repair. Time will tell the service life on these systems and the cost and complexity of repair. I'm glad to see some new technology being developed though.

Last time I did the math on an electric hybrid none of the available options would cost less to own over the life of the vehicle than a regular car. By the time you start to save money, batteries need replacing. It's far more cost effective to drive an older cheaper and reasonably efficient vehicle. If you want a status symbol, go ahead and get your hybrid of choice, or heaven forbid a "smart car" that gets no better MPG than a '60s compact car.

At the end of the day a well designed and built diesel takes the cake on fuel efficiency and money savings. Unfortunately thanks to the EPA and NHTSA, fuel efficient vehicles are pretty much illegal in the States as a result of safety and emissions requirements.

Of course I'm the type who keeps things for a long time... Until they are genuinely won't do waht I need them to, or breaks and is cost prohibitive to repair. I have an old flip phone, it makes phone calls. I might do an Android based phone in the next couple years whenever mine finally bites the dust. My last computer I had for 8 years. Personally I want to take a little time out of trips/events/gatherings to snap a couple pictures so I have a few good shots to help stimulate the memories of living it. I think it's about finding the balance, for me that balance is heavily in favor of not worrying about pictures more than snapping a few here and there.

The problem with such incentives is 9 times out of 10 it's government paying them. Where does government get it's money? From the people it would be "paying". Let them keep their money in the first place.

In all honesty most families in my part of the country have one or two kids. The only times I see massive families is low income inner city dwellers, the type that don't have jobs or never stay at a job for long. These people are paid to have children. Money is taken from my pocket and put in theirs, and additional sums for each additional child these typically single mothers have. Stop subsidizing these massive poor families and they'll think a bit more before having kids. Maybe a few bucks for some condoms really is cheaper than having another kid.

If private companies are payiong to sterilize these folks as you say, I think that's great. It's all voluntary and helps everyone. Less taxes needed for schools (that the parents won't pay) and less crime (look at inner city crime rates among single parent famillies), and of course less people altogether to help stem rapid polulation growth. In a free society this is perfectly fine.

Smoking != using laptop is a class

Smoking has proven long term effects from second hand smoke in enclosed areas. It's insane for government to ban this in private businesses as it is a choice of the business owner ot allow it or not. It's their business, their property, and they aren't forcing anyone to come patronize them. A prime example in my neck of the woods before the smoking ban... There are a lot of diners around here, and some did not allow smoking inside and were clearly advertised as such. Most did, and segregated smokers from non smokers. If smoke bothered you that much, you could just go to one of the many "smoke free" diners or restaurants. This worked fine, but isn't good enough for out communist overlords who need to meddle in all private affairs.

Laptops in classrooms are extremely useful though. If you are distracted by someone typing (not angrily pounding out each letter, mind you), or looking at web sites, then that is your problem. You'd clearly go insane in a cube farm and are not suited for many office jobs. In that case, find a different career path that has training suitable for that environment. Like it or not, computers are here to stay.
