90 days may be the standard for Responsible Disclosure, but that's only reasonable for issuing a software patch. Intel doesn't issue new silicon to everyone affected within 90 days, it can take over a year before the next chips are available, and those might've had their design locked down well beyond that.

Never gonna happen so long as people keep voting for the person who spends the most on political advertising. They don't always win, but they do often enough that they go to the effort of fundraising. If anything, the death of old media will end that. I'm not hopeful that society will suddenly discover critical thinking or independent research.

  16. Sovereign Gatekeepers on Vint Cerf on Differential Traceability on the Internet (acm.org) · · Score: 1

I think the best compromise is for traceability to require information to be held/put together/authorized for collection by multiple groups with conflicting agendas. For example, any of a myriad of law enforcement and intelligence agencies would be Step 1. An internal review organization like the GAO or FISC would be Step 2. A watchdog/public interest group like say the ACLU or EFF would be Step 3. What is crucial is that the group involved in step 3 be independent and unable to be mandated by legal order to approve a request. In other words, they'd be a sovereign entity existing outside of the law; they couldn't initiate any data collection the internal review wouldn't approve, however, which should allay some fears of them becoming (too) corrupted, or they could just be forbidden from initiating data collection.

  17. Alleged Drone Assassination Attempt on Venezuelan President Survives Drone Assassination Attempt (cnn.com) · · Score: 5, Insightful

If it was an actual assassination attempt against the Venezuelan President is dubious, given there were at least two explosions and he was healthy enough to appear on live TV a couple hours later. How far away the explosions were from him was only vaguely referenced, but apparently was close enough to the parade that he thought they were fireworks. He was on a stage, which was presumably to the side of the parade's path. A few people supposedly responsible were arrested, so it's not like an anonymous attacker was controlling the drones (or they were, but a convenient patsy was arrested). That said, no evidence was given that drones were involved.

You're right, death is not the goal. However, giving a criminal two days to calm down and realize they're going to die unless they find and reconcile with their victim is a good motivation for them to turn themselves in. It's also a good motivation to not rape someone after they shoot you, since the law will have been modified so that they're not held responsible for your death; thus, your survival depends on not making them want you dead. The projectiles could have a code on them that can be connected to the gun/person that fired them, so someone could always find the person who has the means of deactivation.

I suspect the psychological deterrent effects would be more effective than actual guns, and the main benefit would be in domestic violence situations which are the most common gun violence situations.
