If a recount doesn't agree with the figures from a prevoius counting, shouldn't they count it again until they get two countings that match? That way there couldn't be any dispute. Why is a "margin of error" tolerated, especially when the difference in votes is so close? The numbers should be *exact*.

You realize that's why we have the concept of 'a minor' right? So that dumb youthful indiscretions do not tarnish one's life for ever?

That's also why you have parents. Why did they let her run around topless for spring break in the first place if it was going to be such an issue? As for "tarnishing one's life", well, you're born topless. I don't understand why being seen with your shirt off is such a big deal anyway. Hell, until you hit the teenage years, lots of parents think little girls running around on the beach with no shirt on is "cute". As soon as they have breasts, though, everybody's sexual insecurities make them all uncomfortable about it. People like that need to grow up.

To top it off, it's not like somebody forced her to do this, or paid her to do it. It's something that happened in a public place, and as such it shouldn't be any less legal to photograph it than it is to witness it. If having a photograph of a naked person in public who happens to be a minor is a crime, it should be the guardian of that minor who allowed them to be naked in public who should be held responsible. That assumes that the real goal here is to protect minors though, and not to make people feel all warm and fuzzy inside because they don't have to be embarresed that they're aroused by sexually mature women.

Since we're on slashdot I guess I should throw out a strawman here. What happens if a 17 year old streaks past the camera in a live newscast? Should the news outlet be prosecuted for child pornography, or be disallowed to keep that footage in their archive?

That's funny. I have two PS2s and they work great. One of them I've had since release day. I have two gamecubes too, but that's because the first one broke after 9 months. I play the PS2 way more frequently too, so it's not like I wore that first gamecube out.

The reality of the situation is that when you make things, some percentage of them break or are defective. When you make millions of something, that can mean there are thousands of defective units. You can bet that a large percentage of people who have their unit break will complain in some public forum about it, but most people with no issues don't even read such things, much less post there.

Let's see somebody post a video of what happens when you twist the hinge on the DS flip screen.... Oh wait, we won't see any of those because that would destroy the system, whereas it seems the PSP keeps working just fine after making these little video clips, so people will make lots of them just for fun. If you have your system break, you have a ligitimate complaint, but they're *all* still under warranty at this point. Everybody else is either incapable of making a rational assessment of a situation like this, or is a fanboy for one side or the other.

That said, I think that an awards show is a good idea for the industry. At the very least, having an awards show with some gravitas would be a great way to put a public stamp of approval on the hard work that development houses put into their games.

Awards shows only give awards to people/things that belong to whatever group gives the awards. Movie and music awards "work" because there is a vast cartel for each of those industries which clearly define who the 'in' crowd is. More importantly it defines who the 'in' crowd *isn't*. Sure many great games take millions of dollars and huge teams of talented people to create. At the same time there are equally great games that take only a few talented people to create and distribute. Encouraging games to go down the path of movies and music is to continue down a path that denys recognition and compensation to independant developers, makes marketing costs the largest barrier to entry into the gaming market for new companies, and maintains the distribution cartel's ability to dip into your wallet and spend your hard earned money on more advertising.

We have review sites and independant awards already. Why do we need to be spoon fed this trash by the middlemen we all hate to give money to?

Now I see that these same (lack of) quality standards are going to be utilized in the PSP design.

THey've shipped a half million of these things already. Unless you can get a percentage of defective units you can't make comments like this. Let's say 100 of these things are bad so far, and 20 or so people have complained on the internet about it... That's 0.02% of them. That woudn't be so bad. But you don't know how many have broken, only that some of them have.
