I've been studying Chinese off and on for 16 years; living in the region for 10 years. I speak fluently, I read at an advanced level and I input characters at a good pace on the computer. But, I write like I'm still in primary school.
Our brains are literally offloading the recall function to external computational devices. But, as we play video games, watch TV and read, our recognition systems are tuned and trained to a fine degree.
Look forward to what cognitive studies come out of this. I doubt we'll see a total loss, but if we lose the assistance, it'll be interesting to see how humans cope as the skill gap between recall and recognition gets wider.
In Unix, storing all your email data in one gigantic file is called mbox. And, there's all sorts of vim-vs-emacs-like threads about it and maildir. You'd also be surprised about various online email systems that do something similar with a bit of redundancy via replication.
Beyond multi-factor authentication, there's another fundamental problem with many Bank websites. They only work in IE. It's difficult to convince non-power-users to drop a bank and go with another that works in Konqueror or even Firefox. This is especially a problem in a non-US country where every bank has the same problem.
The fix is relatively simple. Make all copyright software (and media) 100% findable and purchasable in a simple way across ALL geographies, and you can get more revenue. Say NO to physical media, it doesn't help prevent piracy.
I believe you make the false assumption that only businesses squander money and research projects do not. We shouldn't setup the government to compete with the free market nor manipulate it.
