I think we need to go back to the moon and set up some bases, to better prepare us for mars, and to shut up those idiots who think nasa is in the business of special effects and sound stages. Or maybe turn the ISS into something useful, like a launch pad for some really cool ships or something. Mars would be cool and all, but not with current technology, where it takes months just for a probe to get there and malfunction. And we need some more time to get off our asses and join the rest of the world in the metric system for christ's sake!

I'm not talking about just getting the same old crap, just on a different platform. I'm talking about making things like the gimp, see if we can't maybe oh I don't know, advertise it's features, and it's price. Last I checked it cost $609.00 less than Photoshop, and could be made into something very comparable. If things like the gimp and linux actually look like a threat to adobe and macromedia, well of course they'll open the source, or just use fud to squash it... my bets on the second one there.

I've heard all this "wine (or VM or wahtever) will convice users to switch from windows" before. For the last two or three years I've been hearing it. What I'd rather hear is "many new apps that kick the crap out of their windows counterparts in usability and compatability are coming out and people will have no logical choice but to swithch to Open Source". Linux is getting a bad rep by coming on too strong with this "I'm just as good as windows" crap. What we need is for linux or other open source alternatives to show that just because it isn't Microsoft dosen't mean it won't work "In the Real World". Too often, Linux looks good on paper, but when it comes right down to it, it still can't replace windows 100%. And I'm talking about the desktop, not the server here. In other words, I'm saying a bunch of shit that's been said time and time again, but no one seems to be listening.

I'm not suprised either. I personally, wouldn't buy some linux port of a win game, mainly because I own a playstation, and am much more satisfied with it, than the constant disappointments of PC games (win or linux). I'd rather see psx/dc emulation under linux than some port of a two or three year old game I don't want. But linux ports of win games do deserve money from those that want to play those games. But most gamers still have a win partition anyway... The problem is, a lot of linux users run around pissing on anything that they can't get for free. These are the same people that wanted to keep KDE out of Debian, and keep P2P piracy alive. They think they have "values" or "scruples", and ignorantly think that just because it runs under linux, it had better be completely open source and free for the taking. Funny, I don't remember hearing much about how Netscape was so evil since it wasn't completely free and open source, everybody used it, because there was no alternative. Of course it is now, and as a result, nobody uses it. They all use Mozilla. Basically, my point is that people will first find a way to get things free. Legally or illegally. Then they will consider buying. It's american nature, and thank god we've managed to spread it around the world. God bless the USA.

I don't know why they haven't thought of this before. Make the consumer OS some downloadable, or aol cd-ish giveaway, while the server and workstation OS gets the per-seat gouging. I really think they will do this come to think of it. How can they be called a monopoly while they give away the stuff? Nobody screams about aol's larger (slightly) marketshare, and they give away their product. I honestly don't think they'd see much of a profit loss, especially if they include a 2 week trial of ms office on every install, and then force you to buy the full version, or you get shareware nags when starting windows that say, "If you'd like to do anything even remotely productive, then you need to run right out and buy MS Office for only $399.95. Press "z" in sixty seconds to continue loading windows". And the amazing thing is, people would actually buy into this kind of crap... God bless capitalism...

They finally sent an email in late december urgently reminding current qwest customers to migrate befor they were cut off on 1/22/02. Well, a month ago my parents went through the migration process, and since neither the new msn account or the old qwest account has been working. Finally today after being told by the first msn "tech" that not having the modem set to disconnect after being idle for 30 minutes was the reason we couldn't log onto msn. She promptly hung up after I laughed and told her she had to kidding. The second rep finally told me that the new msn accounts will not become active until 1/22/02. Wouldv'e been nice to know qwest. The only thing I ever use it for is those hard to find skinny puppy tracks, that only appear on some stupid benefit album or something. One thing I love about cd's is the other tracks. I hear three or four on the radio or at a friends, decide I like it, and go and buy the full cd. And then theres all these other tracks on it that I like that I haven't heard. If I'd started out by just sitting on gnutella 20 hrs a day, I still probably wouldn't have all the songs I love. Now as for paying 15-20 $ for a cd, who the hell does? In the mall maybe, but not at the local music store, where I have found some suprisingly good stuff in the $1.99 clearence bin... But seriously, I buy mostly used, and the stores I buy from don't over charge for the new stuff. Shop around dammit, don't go straight to Borders or some other corporate entity. Let them know that if they really want $18.99 for that soundtrack, then they can do without your business. Or hell, just go buy some blanks and copy all your friends cd's...
