    No size of portable computer from wristwatch to 17" notebook will ever be obsolete. Different tasks require different sized screens, and people who do those tasks will always want the most portable device they can do them on. Yes, for some tasks that will mean a wristwatch. But for many others that means a smartphone, or a netbook, or a desktop computer with three 21" monitors.

    Haven't we had this discussion before?

    The "all but..." in English means that it something had come very close to that point, but hasn't quite taken the last step. So, "Money has all but disappeared" means that money has not disappeared, but it has come very close to doing so. Though obviously the author is actually predicting that cash, not money, will almost vanish.

    i played the messenger game up until december 2006 (just over three years total) but am now living in amsterdam and working as a programmer again.

    still, i do hope to get back to the road in the future. messengering is still the best job i have ever had.

    i think it is wrong, given his axioms (as defined here: http://www.bookofparagon.com/Mathematics/PerspexMa chineVIII.pdf).

    (inf) = 1/0 [A20]

    = 1/(-1 * 0) [T77]

    = -1 * (1/0) [A13]

    = -1 * (inf) [A20]

    = -(inf) [A24]

    which contradicts his axiomatic supposition of (inf) and -(inf) as unique entities [T41]

    if it's relatively close to fifty percent they can be forgiven the linguistic gloss. what bothers me more about that statement is the implication that CHANCE would get the tone correct 50% of the time. are there only two possible tones an e-mail can have?

    it's just not worth it to do the art/balance-testing for something that only two or three people are going to see.

    The stated use (subpeonaing google for information on a person who has been arrested and they are building a case against) is perfectly reasonable, assuming they have reason to believe google would have useful evidence. That's what happens when you get arrested, they try to collect evidence to use against you from any source the can.

    And of course, the slippery slope case presented in the intro copy would NOT be reasonable. If i am arrested for valid suspicion i would expect them to try to build a case against me. But, in a free society, it is not acceptable to have everything i do fed into a system which is flagging people as POTENTIAL criminals.

    so: yes. and no.

    that reads like a list of every game i enjoyed on the c64 or 286 back in the 80s.

    i hadn't remembered that they were all EA. it IS kind of sad in a way to see an idealistic little startup become a huge impersonal corporate monolith. but on the other hand, it is kind of happy too. I'm sure the people who started it all off got out of there with nice fat paycheques and it's not like there are any shortage of idealistic startups in the industry today.

    i think the orifianl poster was suggesting that there could be a hash collision between "7,g/1jI-1?m" and "password".

    this is true, but so unlikely as to simply be disregarded.

    isn't the reason that no one has ever conducted the original test before simply that, by the time technology and interest had made it practical, various refinements had been proposed to the Imitation Game which would make it a much for useful and informative test.

    when you say that people don't know what the Turing Test is, the actual truth is that when people say "Turing Test" they are talking about one of several more modern and, frankly, better systems BASED UPON Alan Turing's original Imitation Game.

    not to imply that what your group did was not interesting, but i think that it is really interesting for historical purposes rather than practical machine intelligence ones.

    I suspect you are making a math joke, but i don't think i get it. I am assuming that the basis of the joke is binary and that you are suggesting that the first 10-digit prime number in e is actually the first 2-digit(decimal) number in e. But 11 is just the first 2-digit(decimal) prime number, not the first one in e. The first 2-digit(decimal) prime number in e is in fact 71.

    On the other hand, perhaps you are imagining the the first 10-digit(binary) prime number in a binary expression of e. In this case, the answer is certainly going to be 11 as it is the ONLY 10-digit(binary) prime binary number.

    After reading several posts claiming that the NYT site showed GWB winning under every (or nearly every) permutation and several claiming exactly the opposite to be true i took it upon myself to actually investigate all 24 available permutations.

    Surprisingly, exactly half of them resulted in a Bush victory and half in a Gore victory. The largest margin of victory of any permutation was 493 votes (Gore) and the smallest 2 votes (Bush).

    That is all. It is sad to see both sides directly linking to a data source while at the same time making ridiculously inaccurate claims about the information therein.

    it's true. i posted before i RTFA.

    $599 is a decent proce for an entry-level. I still stand by my original sentiment though that kids are quite capable of using a so-called adult computer and so the market for these is small. In most households, I would wager that adults and children use the same computer or that, when there are multiple computers, it is a result of upgrading.

    The market of people who are willing to pay several thousand dollars for an underpowered PC because it appeals to their children is a small one.

    Besides, we should have all learned by now that if you plop a small child in front of a normal PC they will figure things out at an alarming rate. No animated rodent middle-man required.
