Hell regarding the RROD's and a smaller form factor I had the same question. No shilling involved.

From the looks of it, the new design has a much better thermal design, loads more vents and stuff. The powerbrick also looks tiny compared to the original. Also the CPU/GPU chips have been shrunk to 45nm, compared to 90nm in the original, which would drasticly lower the heat dissipation.

I havent seen any specifics on power usage, but i would be highly surprised if MS screwed up the thermals again, especially when doing a complete re-design such as this

i dont believe i'm actually replying to this, but here goes:

The problem with your shill theory is that it allows you to yell "SHILL!!!!!" at pretty much everyone who doesnt share your views of microsoft/xbox 360. For instance, my first 360 died, but MS very gracefully replaced it, all in all i was out of a machine (which was 3 years old at the time) for barely a week. Furthermore, i enjoy gaming on it, and i can honestly say it is the best console i've had in terms of fun (better then the Wii for sure, also beats out my gamecube, xbox and dreamcast).

Now you will just claim i'm a shill, for saying that the RRoD thing wasnt a big deal for me, and MS handled it very gracefully, even though this is just me, not a MS paid marketeer, but a critical consumer with a passionate hate for other branches of MS (seriously, why can you not by default change the language on windows 7 home premium? fuckers!)

Also, claiming Pojut is a shill is just ignorant, the guy is a valuable member of the /. community, with lots of insightfull and good posts on various subjects.

i owned a first gen 360, and yes it died with RRoD, but all in all i have very little to complain about that. It died near the end of the 3-year extended waranty (wasnt sure if it was just in, or just out of the period), but MS didnt even ask about it, they gave me a shipping label and the next week i had a new (well refurb probably) 360, the only reason it actually took that was because UPS had some trouble finding me at home.

So yes, out of my two 360's, one has already been replaced (my newer elite is fine), but MS handled it quite gracefully, and compared to the headaches i've had with PC hardware, this was relatively minor.

For PC's upgrades are pretty much mandatory to keep up with the games, with consoles it is 300-400 bucks every five years, and you're set

Not to mention that for a console the procedure is:

    1) unpack box
    2) hook up console
    3) turn on equipment

i probably dont have to explain the hassle of pc upgrades here..

I wholehartedly agree with elrous. PC gaming is superior in a lot of cases, but it also can be a huge headache with upgrades, driver updates, maintaning a windows machine for optimal performance, installing all the crap EA foists on you bundled with that one great game they make etc... In comparison consoles are hugely stable, low maintenance and pretty much fool-proof in terms of operation (hit on-switch, insert game-disc, choose 'play'), cost a lot less compared to keeping a gaming pc up to date in the same period (to the point where console+office/web-pc is cheaper then full-blown gaming pc).

I completely agree that MS needs to get off the wavey-wobly bandwagon and make a new xbox

In which case the business is likely going down, and you are better of finding that out through a raise-negotiation, then by showing up to a locked down office with a "closed due to bankrupcy" note on the door...

If you go about a raise-negotiation politely (dont start with demanding X percent), it can end in three ways:
    1) No, sorry we simply cant afford it, even though you took over much more work
    2) No, and pack up your stuff, you are fired
    3) Yes, figures to be discussed

One could argue that in cases 1 and 2, you are better of getting out of there anyway, in case 1 you might soon be out of a job anyway, in case 2 it is very doubtfull you would want to work for people like this.

this all is assuming that you are paid under 'market-value' for what your tasks actually are, so it is probably very wise to look around a bit first. It will help you make a well-funded argument for the raise, and a realistic demand, and will help you find a job much faster when shit goes pear-shaped
