I have a better idea: I call it Darwinism. If you're so fucking stupid that you need a National Holiday to remember to change your Fire Alarm battery, you deserve to die in a fire.
That's absurd. You can't just change 'business hours'. Business hours exist because they are times that are static and remain reliable across time zones.
You do know that the Senate is controlled by radical Republicans right?
Or am I confusing it with Congress?
Either way, our government is severely unbalanced to the "Religious Right". The younger kids reading this will suffer the most, because they may be considered 'terrorists' because they do some 'undefined act' that the government doesn't agree with. They could be imprisioned indefinitely as 'enemy combatants' without Due Process (a Constitutional Right!) and without even having to be told what they are doing wrong.
Very bad things are happening to our country right now. If you think the 2004 (and 2000) Elections were just a strange coincidence, you're very naive and you deserve to lose all of your rights (free speech included).
and never a 'right' of websites. If they want to 'remember' my order, they can ask me, and I can accept the cookie. If they want to place a counter, beacon, or some other BS on my computer, they can expect to be denied.
This is basic Solicited versus UNSolicited marketing.
Once a year, one person will ring my doorbell trying to sell something. There's a reason that only _ONE_ person is marketing that way - because it doesn't work. If I don't know who is ringing my doorbell, I don't answer the door.
My computer/(aka most trusted personal information appliance) will get the same respect, because it's an extension of me and my persona.
If the stock price is any indicator, one couldn't come up with an answer either.
Google stock (GOOG) ended the trading day up (by 6 tenths of a percent I think), but after trading sank greatly. We'll have to see how it opens tomorrow to know for sure.
Either way, it's tough to say. Even if the stock is doing well, it doesn't necessarily mean that the company as a whole is.
Personally, I'm on the fence just as much. I love the company, but I just can't believe how it's trading/valued at the corner of Wall and Broad St. Google seems like it's own 'one-company-tech-bubble', IMHO.
IANAFC (I am not a financial consultant), H (however).
Look on freshmeat.net for timer or countdowntimer. It's a pythong stript, but it works well. It's very basic though. I turn it on when I turn on the oven/microwave, etc. so I know when it's done.
I don't think that could work. Because you'd have people in different areas that wouldn't be able to collaborate "during business hours" because business hours wouldn't be undefined. For example, my 9-5 would be someone elses 13-22. There are several other reasons why that's just probably not practical.
That said, I do like the idea of GMT, or Swatches "internet time idea". Heh.
I use rentacoder.com. The "buyer" gets all rights to the software that the "coder" developed, since the work is work-for-hire.
They have a safe escrow system in place for the projects, and their arbitration system is good (I actually had to use it once when a coder didn't do the work I paid for). I got my money back, and all was well.
When my server sees an IE7 User Agent string, I'm going to reply with a message saying, "Sorry, your browser is broken." and redirect them to Firefox.
By nipping it in the bud early, we can prevent the proliferation of this IE 7 garbage.
The user will complain to the tech support people that, "It was working before you made changes to my computer, so it's not the website that's the problem, it's the changes you made to my computer - now change it back."
If enough high-value sites did this, it would stop IE7 dead in it's tracks because I don't believe you can edit the User Agent string in IE. Yes there may be hacks, but hacks are exactly that - hacks.
So, thanks for the heads up MSFT, I'll prepare my server now.
There was just recently a "breakthrough" in solar photovoltaic techonology. You may want to wait a year or two and see if that technology pans out. If so, it would be a much cheaper solution.
And, your Dad won't be pissed when your neighbor buys a similar solar panel rig for 20% of what he paid.
I can't tell you how many people's PCs I've found with basically NO updates applied (for whatever usually pointless reason).
Here's my pointless reason: My unpatched Win2k (SP1) box has been working dutifully since 2002 _without any re-install_.
I've had several _other_ Win2k boxes that had "Automatic Windows Update", and *EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM* has died for reasons "unknown".
My theory is that there are many more virus writers (kiddee's) these days then there were a few years ago. They aren't targeting "old-school" exploits, they're all targeting the newest/latest exploit. By not using.Net Framework and all of the other "recent" Microsoft garbage, I've kept my box very secure. Granted, I can't run any apps that require Win2k SP4 (with.Net Framework); but that's actually been a blessing - I've discovered great alternative applications on Linux and OS X.
As we all saw during the "broadband revolution" of a few years ago (even when Taco couldn't get BB), the big cities get the coolest tech first. They also tend to get blown up first during wartimes, but that's a risk we just have to take.
So to answer one of your questions: What would be the best way to get the ball rolling on getting fiber for home use implemented? My answer would be: "Move to a big city".
I'm just a comedian though. Hopefully someone insightful will post a more insightful answer.

I tried searching for VIA.TW but no adeu. Yet.
The stock trades as a number or something, on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (I don't know what that exchange is called).
I didn't try searching for stocks on the Futse or DAX though.

"Quoth the VOIP Resellah, nevermore (y0)"
Edgar would be prauhd.
_EVERYBODY_ knows that Toulouse [Lutrec] is a famous artist and NOT a city!
You fools - don't buy into this scam. Buy V1ag4ra instead!
Howdy! You beat me to the rentacoder.com post, heh.
Ok, so if you jump from the best ship around, where do you go?
Are you going to move to Windows?! HAHAHAHA!?!
You must be kidding.
As for the Linux option, I don't consider Linux Desktop ready to compete with Apple, yet.

Live, raunchy, 2 on 1 Old Grandma Harcore!
I'm concerned about unauthorized Access Points being installed, or users who setup wireless computer to computer networks.
He's trying to prevent unauthorized Access Points from being installed, you fucking moron.
And how do you know he's not on a University Campus, trying to prevent students from peering?
So Tandy/Radio Shack is entering into the keyboard market it seems.
I thought they only made stereo equipment.
I wonder if _this_ study is in the 1/3 of them that are found to be nonsense.
My head hurts.
You can easily remove the liquid and use it for something else.
Which Liquid man?! I'm so confused already!!!
Do I remove the coffee and heat my "hot choclate" or do I remove the water and wash part of my hand?
Redirect water from the gutter to a storage tank for later use on the garden, rather than flushing it to the sewerage.
Do you by chance happen to have a horrible mosquito problem near your home?
"Don't believe the Hype!"
