There is a big difference, venting it into the atmosphere still releases it into the atmosphere. I have been advocating collecting it and using it to generate power in these areas. I am glad they are finally doing something with it.
I don't bother benchmarking, but it rendered a 250 part system with various degrees of translucency, moving, reflections and shadows with 8x anti-aliasing at 1920 by 1080 with 60 frames per second for 30 seconds in about 35 minutes. My old computer took 10 days to do the first 27 seconds before I had to cancel it, and that had a dual core amd with an ATI radeon 2500 and 2 gb ram. So I would say it is pretty lightning fast. it gets all 5.0s in the windows experience index except for my crappy hard drive, but I could care less about that. Especially at 10% of the apple variant with the ability to run many more programs, I don't know why you are even trying to argue. Seriously, are you that attracted to steve jobs?? Or are you just mentally problemed??
That is any rabies/flu recombination. but my point was that you don't even need a disease. All you really need is large groups of stupid, violent people. Tea party + Fox news + religion = this result.
I have been advocating this position since I first learned about the exploding lakes from the science channel in 8th grade! I am very glad someone finally got around to doing it. If only there was something they could do to stop the carbon dioxide eruptions.
Large groups of pathetic unthinking masses trying to kill all non-them. At the accelerations of stupidity coming into conservative America via. Fox news using false analogies, I would say arm yourself hard right now, because in about 1-2 years, they will have degraded into manic destructive psychotic mobs. Hell, they are already bringing guns to protests and protesting several parts of the constitution. I have been attacked for being an atheist, despite all the good things I have done for my society, by people who find nothing wrong with cheating, stealing, lying, or hating. Give it a couple months. Although living zombies only take dismemberment before dying. undead zombies on the otherhand would most certainly be devoured by vultures (just look at the vultures following armies in the civil war, due to the high amount of death and long time fighting).
What the hell is wrong with you dude? My system doesn't make much noise at all, and stays very cool. And there is no way in hell you could get an Apple system with my computing power for under 10,000. Hell, you can't even get my system built by dell for under 6,000. And like the message you responded to pretty clearly states, Apple products waste a lot of resources, and ridiculous proprietary parts that can't exactly be easily or cheaply replaced.
There are no benefits to building a mac, unless you consider thousands of dollars cheap for basic labor, or an ugly interface and crappy standard parts.
Nudists come in all shapes and sizes, and don't give a damn what people look like. It is just about chilling comfortably, naturally, and honestly. Cute try though, should be modded funny, not insightful.
It can't compete with the couple of hours of air travel, but there is no reason it can't be so advantageous in price that you can travel comfortably without as much hassle for less, and just take a bit longer to get where you are going. It will be worth a few hours for all the benefits.
Ever heard of walking? Most everything in my city (st. Louis) is within a mile of a bus stop, and within a few miles of a metrolink station, one links up to the train. For the most part you can go anywhere, unless you are so pathetically and morbidly obese to be able to walk a half a mile. And trains might be a little bit slower than aircraft, but you can still get long distance in comfort without all kinds of crap.
Easy solution: Nudist trains. I would love to travel without worrying about all that crap, and get to do so comfortably. Nudist airlines would be pretty cool too.
I love my car, but I also love trains. I would love to travel by train for long distances, it gives me the ability to relax in long trip without putting miles on my already high mileage vehicle. If only it didn't cost 200 bucks to travel in the lowest quality at 1.5x as long as a car. It is ridiculous. But I would rather travel by train if they could fix the damn system. I would choose rail over airplane any day. I love my car as a grocery getter, and it drives me where I need to go well. I see no need to give it up, and I don't see why this car or train thing keeps coming up. You can be just as free using a train where you would otherwise use an airplane. We should really be investing more like 50 billion in national high speed rail system, to allow for easier national travel, and open up the US to everyone here.
Hardware is only part of the story no matter what. Software and OS functionality is always part of the story. I build my rig for 1200 bucks. It has 12 gb of ram in 2 triple channel kits, it has an i7 920, two nvidia GTS250s, and a good cooling system. I can run all industry standard software, and if I need to run software that only runs on mac (practically none) then I can mac it up in a virtual PC. but that need has not arisen, and I doubt it will.
I can play any game I want on it with amazing stability and good security with the proper security software installed, and I can easily render incredibly large and complex renderings in just a few hours. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, but to price a similar Apple product, you are talking several thousand dollars for a substitute operating system that doesn't provide any benefits worth the thousands of dollars of increased cost. So is it better? doesn't matter, because quality per dollar is so much lower.
I call motherfuckingbullshit. Seriously bullshit. Spying on students in their homes is bullshit, they are already treated like fucking criminals in school, and looked for any excuse to pin some kind of bullshit on them. Seriously, it is like most of the administrations in those schools are just looking for excuses to punish kids, but when they get caught breaking every privacy barrier they can, and violating every law they can to force unjust punishments on innocent children, nobody gives a shit. Fuck those ass holes to hell.
I love linux. I love windows. I love Unix, I even love MS-Dos. I hate apple products. It isn't that they aren't good, it is that if I wanted to be ass-raped by an elephant with a spiked penis, I would find an elephant with a spiked penis. It would be less painful than overpaying for something by that much. As someone who was/is poor, I detest your rampant waste of money.
To be fair, I have been a slashdotter for a couple of years now, and this post really inspired me about these. If I ever have anything worth doing this stuff with, or money to do it with, I will most certainly have a dozen or so around.
It is the disgustingly toxic school food, pesticides, lead paint, asbestos, or poor treatment by faculty that cause these symptoms. Or the water that tastes like piss out of drinking fountains, or the treatment like prisoners for no reason. Enough to drive anyone to experience psychosomatic effects and lose all motivation and drive to live.
They say all children profile like psychopaths before they leave high school. I can tell you why, anyone living in the bullshit environment forced unto people until they are legally an adult will drive you fucking nuts. Did that maybe ever occur to anyone? That metal detectors, fully armed sherifs and security guards authorized to use force every 10 feet? Or maybe it is the getting thrown in a cold dark room for a week because you got beaten up, and zero tolerance says that counts as a violent offence? Maybe being forced to memorize out of context information out of logical order and without being taught its applications or purpose? Maybe if schools actually treated students like people, instead of monsters, maybe if schools taught information in a logical order, and taught it, instead of forcing meaningless memorization, maybe, if schools actually provided half way decent meals for the price, or water that didn't make your stomach hurt, or didn't make you dress in an oddly specific arbitrary fashion. Maybe then it wouldn't be such fucking hell. Maybe then the children would actually be able to think, feel, and learn. But like that will ever happen.
Sure, a lot of productivity programs don't need multiple cores, but they also don't use that much processing power relatively to begin with. Running 50 instances of microsoft word doesn't even show a noticeable increase in use on my system. There are, however, many programs that could significantly improve performance by multi-threading, and max out a single process. Solid modeling programs, building modeling programs, fluid dynamics and stress analysis, rendering, format conversion, and so on. Also, programs that have to do a lot of processing in a short time for some task, could be threaded out to speed up response time. Wouldn't hurt anyone. But gaming is certainly not the only good use. I know Autodesk inventor uses all 8 of my threads to render, but it doesn't use my graphics cards. For a rendering of a video animation, my graphics cards would be able to solve a frame in a couple seconds, unlike my 8 threads, which take about a minute to do it. I would love to utilize my multi-GPU system so that the renderings run faster. 2 days is just too long for a 1280x720 30 second rendering of a complex mechanical system.
But yes, for general purposes and processes that don't use a lot of power, hard drives are the biggest bottleneck. Also, my computer has 12 GB ram. It ain't 16, but I have only maxed it out a few times. In 6 sticks, 2 triple channel kits, DDR3 at 2000hz I believe, I built it a good 10 months ago now.
Not only that, but silicon based opitical lasers could easily output significantly more information at a faster rate, meaning more of the pins can be used to provide power. Even all of them if they can make the lasers and photoresistors small enough and have the pins for power then input and output in a separate connector.
And heat dissipation and power needs are hopefully declining as we can make transistors run on lower voltages. Imagine if we could make transistors operate within just a few millivolts. Then running my powerhorse beast of a box would not only stop using so much energy, but would no longer be responsible for heating my apt. in the winter. In the case of lower power use, and therefore lower heat production, you could layer processors easily. The main barrier there is the development of vertical wires in the processor, but progresss is moving fast in that area.
I would also like to see better utilization of multiple cores and GPUs. Because I have 2 GTS 250s waiting for a version of autodesk inventor that can utilize them for rendering. Instead I just watch my 8 threads max out for a couple hours, or a couple days depending on the job. If my GPUs were put into use, it would take maybe a half an hour for the most intensive renderings I have developed. No real reason that there can't be better utilization of multi-threading. The coding behind it isn't exactly that difficult, it just requires putting forth some extra time. That, and bigger/faster solid state drives. I hate having only a 750 gb hd that costs like 60 bucks and stops working after a couple of years. 750 is like nothing, considering they can put 64 GB of data onto a chip half the size of a fucking dime. If they could take that storage density and scale it up to the size of an SSD, you could have a few terabytes of incredibly fast hard drive.
Switch to transporting freight on high speed electric rail. It would take cars off the road, get things where they are going faster, and use a lot less oil. Otherwise, very true. I might note that I would very much prefer to take a train to get me across the country than drive or fly, if only it weren't so slow or expensive. Cut the price of tickets from my current town to my home town down from 180 to 50-60 bucks, and make it take 6-12 hours instead of 18-24 hours, and it would be a viable alternative to driving on many long distance flights. Cars are still necessary for getting groceries and certain other things.
I also thank you, a very good set of points. America uses an insane amount of power, and I am certainly part of it, but it is what it is. Hopefully we can continue to make electronics use less electricity to do more, I know my current computer has more than 200x the processing ability of my old one, but uses the same amount of power. Hopefully our society will find more ways to improve efficiency and drop energy consumption, and find new ways of generating power. And hey, with any luck we will find room temperature superconductors (I am telling you, just add boron(haha)). It would be especially nice if we actually started building houses and buildings properly, to take advantage of the environment to minimize the need for heating and cooling. Until then.
But really, I was going to post the exact same thing, except more in terms of significantly lower energy use per capita, without details. Great explanation.
Not just that, I like the idea of computer within computer. You could have the internal computer monitor system processes and temperatures, keep disks running efficiently and keep everything protected and updated. It would be nice to have the added protection and monitoring, especially on a low quality high power system like mine, which is fairly unstable.
Where did college students get all that money??? I couldn't even afford a rudamentary Apple, and I certainly wouldn't want one either. What, are they the only ones immune to the financial collapse or something?! I built my super-rig for less than a baseline mac. Someone needs to teach these kids the value of ten thousand dollars, because clearly they are missing it. Like seriously, even on parents money that is crazy. And financial aid can't pay for a Mac, unless there is some crazy discrepancy where I live at half the poverty line (with private loans), and some kid can afford to burn his money like it is free.
Do they have one of those for the modern world, that runs a bit faster than dual 180 mhz?? and has a more reasonable ram than 256 mb? And fits in standard drive bays? Cause it would be awesome if there was.
There is a big difference, venting it into the atmosphere still releases it into the atmosphere. I have been advocating collecting it and using it to generate power in these areas. I am glad they are finally doing something with it.
10% the price, but 2x the usefulness.
I don't bother benchmarking, but it rendered a 250 part system with various degrees of translucency, moving, reflections and shadows with 8x anti-aliasing at 1920 by 1080 with 60 frames per second for 30 seconds in about 35 minutes.
