    I'd like to see if they're going to rewrite URLs on sites like Amazon and others and claim commission on the sales, using affiliate schemes.

    Cant think of any other reason they'd want an insecure browser.

    If you have walked or driven past some of the streets of south side Chicago, you would be asking yourself the same question about a different country.

    I'm not making excuses for the lack of govt focus on infrastructure, I'm just pointing out that every country has problems related to poverty, bad/old infrastructure and corruption.

    Yeah, its the obvious reply, that I could not help but make.

    The problem is when you want people to donate on a consistent basis, you have to give something back to them, which provides some benefit. Have you considered approaching Google? I've heard rumors of them having a pretty decent server farm. ;)

    Would you be open to section sponsorships? For example I run a number of Hong Kong based websites and would love to sponsor that section on WikiPedia in exchange for a sponsored link back to my site.

    You'll only get so much money from donations without giving something back.

    The weird part is that after all of these wonderful things (including userland) he cannot find the funding to keep weblogs going. Guess he missed out on the dotcom boom or has no desire to monetize his traffic beyond google adsense.

    Blame this on money laundering and other patriot act related federal laws that foreign banks and insurance companies do not want to deal with.

    People forget, IBM also has to battle SUN and HP in more lucrative spaces. Having a consistent scalable *nix interface gives them a huge advantage over SUN/HP.

    Broadband TV? Thats so ... 2003. We have had it in Hong Kong for over 10 months now. Connects into the DSL modem and provides on demand cable channels.

    Every commercial enterprise targets. Targetting is about making money and making money is about targetting.

    1) Malls: Malls collect information about the foot traffic, demographics and patterns of their customers. They can then position their rents according to the traffic.

    2) Retail: They use loyalty cards, store credit cards and your regular credit cards to track and profile you. They know certain products sell better a week before paychecks are due and certain products sell better the week after paychecks are cashed.

    3) CRM companies: Companies like Siebel / Onyx etc have extensive profiling options built into the software which are used my major corporations, govt groups and yes, when a sales guy finds out his customers birthday, wife's name and kid's school, he puts them in there are they're tracked.

    4) Banks: You think for a second that they don't exploit young working people who don't have enough saved up and sell them expensive credit cards?

    The list goes on ... on and on ...

    By the way, no one is brought up why my ISM using SpamAssassin is exempt from this whole invasion of privacy thingy... they have processes which reads my mail and makes certain decisions based on the content.

    Some standard rules we use with our email letters.

    1) Topic prefix. [websitename]
    2) Sent from an address people know as my real address which is used on my website
    3) Content, Content and more content. Spend about 12 hours per email (we send out one every week) to research interesting topics in our niche

    The result has been about 15000 subscribers with over 50-60 percent opening and about 20% clicking through. The key is building credibility using good relevant content -- people forward our newsletters to their friends who in turn may subscribe.

    Email is a tool.. it can be used effectively and it can be used dangerously.

    Goes back the argument (and please don't get on my case for quoting this) that guns dont kill people. People kill people.

    I run a few niche sites in Hong Kong and have found that people are more than willing to open newsletters if they're filled with content (we fill ours with events calendars, reviews of restaurants etc) AND targetted special offers. Emails are working and they're working very well.

    I wish I had an opportunity to tell Brendan Battles this... perhaps I should hit reply on one of the many viagra emails I get every hour.
