Has anyone else ported a WebSphere 3.5 application to WebLogic?
I haven't done that, but I did the opposite: migrating from welogic to websphere (and also jboss/tomcat)
Besides some minor problems (easily solvable) on the jsp tags, the main difference between the app servers are the features that are not defined in the J2EE specification yet, and so are implemented in different ways by each app server. In particular:
- authentication mechanism (this is a PITA if you are implementing your own authentication, like we do:) - custom services (jboss supports MBeans, which might be the standard in the future, but websphere and weblogic have their own way to do that) - how to start/stop/restart the app server - how/where to define JNDI objects (like user transacation and data sources)
Overall, I think moving from websphere to weblogic would be easier than the opposite way (websphere is a powerfull tool, but in my opinion it is pretty hard to configure/mantain).
And there is something called date and a derivative workd called outdated:
Linux ACPI-HOWTO v 0.1e, 22 January 2001
Seriously, this HOWTO is pretty obsolete and the ACPI support has changed a lot from that time. I was following the ACPI-devel list on SourceForge some months ago, and this is a known fact (although I can't understand why nobody updated it yet; they are probably waiting for the driver to be more stable).
I've been tempted by their excellent prices far too many times
I have shopped there *many* times, and I never had any major problem.
Their computer hardware is nearly all refurbished (or just relabelled)
That's not true. If the hardware is refurbished, they normally says so (I just bought a refurbished Hanspring Visor for $99 last weekend). Even the so called BSD (blue stick of death) is normally caused by people who returned the product because they didn't like it.
Not only does their hardware suck,
There are some rumors that they don't buy products that have passed the quality control tests, so you may have a chance of getting a bad product (which you could be returned). But in my experience, I never bought a bad one.
but they're a tremendous pain in the ass about refunds. they are almost only willing to accept exchanges, you will have to argue at length for anything else
That's ridiculous, they are the most flexible store to return products. I returned lots and lots of products (mostly because they didn't work with Linux), and never had a problem. Sometimes you ask something to a salesman (like if a product will be compatible with another), and he will just say "I'm not sure, but if you can buy it and if it doesn't work, just return it". Their target market is mainly the geeks, so they are aware people will try out the stuff and return it. The stickers you mentioned is a proof of that.
I thought that was a typical/. editor's gaffe, but it's actually YDL's fault:
YDL 2.3 surpasses YDL 2.2 with an array of timely updates, improvements: kernel 2.4.19, the 'Liquid' theme, CUPS print system, apt-get, OpenOffice 1.0, Mozilla 0.9.9, Galeon 1.2, Evolution 1.0.5, AbiWord 1.0.2, netatalk 1.5.3.1, and support for the Radeon 7500 (excluding 'Mobility') video card.
The funny thing is, already they're a step ahead on the kernel, they are one behind on mozilla...
When the chief Jedi record-keeper is asked in "Attack of the Clones" about a planet she has never heard of, she replies that if it's not in the Jedi archives, it doesn't exist. (The planet in question does exist, again, with terrible consequences.)
It seems to me that IBM is looking at Linux as an operating system that belongs on server grade hardware and beyond, not on desktops or laptops. There probably are not enough people using Linux on their laptops to justify the time spent supporting it.
This is a chicken/egg problem: the vendors say it is not worth to support linux on the desktop/laptop because there ate not enough users, but in the other hand, there are not enough users because they can't get the proper support from the vendors.
They learn the art of efficiency. It is a complete waste of time to shave your beard if it just going to grow back.
Yeah, it sure is. It's also a waste of time to take a shower everyday, as you'll get dirty again the next day.
So why do it? That's around 15 hours a year for a Mon-Fri schedule. Grow a beard and trim it for 5 min every two weeks. Done. Similarly, it would be much more efficient to just clean yourself with a wet towel everyday and take a full bath only every two weeks (like before a lug meeting or some other social event).
Lets be honest here, has anyone seen the television show from the 1970s, is that closer to reality for you?
I saw the show when I was a little kid, so I don't remember it very well. But a couple of years ago, I found the pilot VHS tape on a video rental store, and I bought it for about 3 bucks or so (guess people weren't renting it at all:).
So I gladly called some friends to watch it and have some laughs. That movie was so bad that it was kind of funny. And I'm not talking about CG (or lack of) only. Even the plot sucked (there is a scene when Spidey destroy the antenna that was causing the ninjas to be bad, and then he hug them and says they are good again - or something like it).
Anyway, I'll probably watch it again after I see the new movie...
I think what's ruined it more for X-Files viewers is the fact that the shows been cancelled
I'm a great X-Files 'viewer', but I think it's quite the opposite. They should have pulled the plug a couple of seasons ago, while DD was still in the show.
In fact, every time Fox announces "there's *only* X (no pun intended:) episodes left", I felt it really means "there's *still* X episodes left"....
Actually this was mentioned weeks ago on aint-it-cool-news.com
Yeah, but there is a huge difference between accessing AICN for movies/TV rumors and innocently refreshing your/. page in a Sunday night during your 'break' between The Simpsons and The X Files...
I will *never* access/. in such situations again. Imagine accessing it a few Tuesday from now and see something like 'Senator David Palmer is finally dead!' or 'from the I-can't-believe-she-did-that dept: Nina Myers was the ultimate mole'...
Also the book 'a quarter century of unix' is a great read, if a bit dated.
A bit? I would say it's a gigabyte dated. They don't have a single mention of Linux, if I'm not wrong (I didn't read the whole book).

A point where anything that doesn't exist in Google doesn't exist, period?
Like:

Actually, it's even worse than that.
It is just a lame attempt from the editor to consolidade the 'to pull a Lone Gunman' verb, which was "invented" by himself.
I'm almost convinced to put him on the list of editors to have the stories excluded (as someone already suggested)...
(The $ in MS is just getting old)
Ok, from now on let's call it M# (as a reference for the C# - C crarp - and an abbreviation for 'that #$%^&!* company'.).
Maybe he will also change the scene at the begining of ANH where Obi Wan tells Luke he had never seen that droid before:
LUKE: Then the droid does belong to you.
BEN: Don't seem to remember ever owning a droid. Very interesting...
