At one point after the dotcom bust, SUN had the second most engineers dedicated to designing CPUs. More than IBM and certainly more than AMD, only behind Intel. Those engineers in the Valley aren't cheap and what does SUN have to show for all the work of those engineers? Back in 2000/2001 time, I had a friend that worked for SUN and he didn't think that they would last another 5 years. Their overhead was just killing them with little progress in converting to a service company.
It's a case of steering the ship before stopping the leaks. Eventually, all the leaks will sink your ship.
I mean, cellphones in general have out sold PCs for years and we're still using PCs. I don't see a single device that does everything well coming any time soon. Sure you can write a nice long email on a Blackberry but have you try editing excel on it? Tablets are great for my parents to watch their movies or slingbox at their business, but terrible for just about anything else.
What's up with EA holding IPs and don't do much with them? I want a new Privateer, Magic Carpet, Space Hulk, and Crusader. I thought Crusader was suppose to be a trilogy, they only made 2 games.
When I played with one at the Microsoft store, it was slow... seriously lagging, think iTunes slow. One thing I love about featurephone is that they're fast.
Well, there's the Jungle Hypothesis, the Zoo Hypothesis, and I'm sure a few other ones. While lack of proof isn't proof, there's also the possibility that intelligent life in this part of the galaxy only started recently.
what happens when in 6 or 12 months, manufacturers like Samsung stop updating their current release Android phones? (Talk to a Behold 2 owner about Samsung not updating phones right after release). How are we going to be protected from the army of infected phones? Who's going to be responsible for updating a Flash vulnerability in Android if the manufacturer doesn't release updates? Will Flash updates by pushed from Adobe?
Simple question, how will I effectively keep my 100+ apps/games organize with this interface? I know there's a "hub", but all my games is be games and then I'll have to scroll through pages and pages of icons.
You're not going to start with a blank slate and work from there. I don't care how many programmers you can throw at creating a new operating system, it's not going to be solved in reasonable (under 3 years) amount of time. If anything it's going to make it worse. Probably start with SELinux and work from there.
From the article "DRDO to develop cyber attack proof operating system" that's going to be asking for trouble. I'm going to assume the Windows compatibility is going to be WINE or ReactOS. Come on, "giving us the exclusivity of owning a system unknown to foreign elements and protect our security system", it's going to either be base on something that's already out there or something completely new with holes that haven't been discover. These guys are just asking to be attacked.
I saw her in concert when she first came out and she's one of the prettiest singers I've seen in person. She's prettier in person than on her album cover. Unfortunately, I didn't even know she had a new album in 2008 until a few weeks ago. That's the problem with the record industry, spending a lot of money promoting new singers and not spending a little to promote those singers with an existing fanbase.
I would say the percentage would be the less than the iPhone jailbreaking. But if Apple pulled something like this it would make the news and they would be completely slam for it.
But is it really a feature? I mean, let's say the G2 gets rooted by something malicious, wouldn't that the malicious software want to make itself the "fail-safe" version. So if you were to install a clean version, the firmware restore would then restore the infected fail-safe version. Because if it can be completely root, then I'm sure there's a going to be a way to replace the "fail-safe" version of the firmware. Unless, the fail-safe version is burned in and then there's no way to upgrade the device.
You're right, I always dealt with Dell as a box-pusher. They were great when just pushing the box because at one point you couldn't build a cheaper computer than getting a Dell. I could buy a decent Dell server and 6 months later add a few extra hard drives. Then they got greedy and tried to push the box, the software, and any additional hardware. Now, I buy a Dell server and have to buy Dell certified hard drives, lame.
When I was young, my friends and I pirated any game that could be pirated. Main reason for pirating back then was we were 10-15 year old, it's very difficult to convince our parents to buy a game. For games that we couldn't pirate, one of us would buy a copy (through hardwork and saving) and then lend it to the others to play through.
I pirated Civilization 1, Wing Commander 1, X-Wing, and Wolf3D. But if I didn't pirate back then I wouldn't have gone on to buy Civilization 2-4 (waiting for Civ5), Wing Commander 3,4, and Prophecy plus Privateer 1 and Privateer:Darkening, Tie-Fighter, X-W vs T-F, X-W: Alliance, and just about everything in the id collection since Quake. Without those childhood memories, I wouldn't have bought those later games. I never played X-Com so I'm not excited about the new X-Com game.
I've never even heard of Machinarium and I'm a subscriber to PC Gamer magazine.

Earth.
I know, I can't believe it either.

Q: "how much do you think a closed-source security review on this scale would have cost?"
A: Windows Vista. Both in term of monetary cost and reputation.

so now it's a feature-phone without the important data-centric applications. !?!?
I suspect that a lot of the pre-orders were companies that did mobile application developments.
I'll give up Facebook before I give up GMail.
No, Reapers (Mass Effect) or The Eternal Ones (Star Control 3). Same idea, harvester of sentient life.

Or you know, Reapers.
I wonder how this is going to effect the development of the Playbook.

There was so little sci-fi in Caprica. I tried watching it but couldn't stand the writing or the acting.
I got nauseous from the swipe interface.

This whole week, I've had to deal with infections from Flash drive-by insecurity and stupid people still using IE.

I mean, iTunes 9 was like an old van that couldn't get a hill. iTunes 10 is like a new van that can barely make it over the hill.
there's built-in anonymity with millions of people with the same name.
I don't think I'm the only person that find that like kid annoying and condescending. It's a major turn-off for me.

until the experiment has been repeated by someone else, I'm not holding any hope.
