Their own Trends/Hot Trends and Zeitgeist "features" allowed spammers to see in almost real-time what people were searching for, and then create spamdexes for any terms that show up. Repeat across a few domains, cross-link, and voila! instant content-less link farm. I'm sure someone at Google thought Hot Trends would be clever to show, but they certainly didn't think anyone would game the system.
And don't even get me started on the tools who run referrer plug-ins that say "You were searching for these terms! Welcome to our useless web site!"
