The professor made the Thermonuclear reactor with a bunch of coconuts, financed, of course, by the Howell's... but then Gilligan saw Ginger...got all flustered and tripped over the whole thing causing a meltdown and the Skipper's hair to glow... yeah, that's a classic episode indeed

    The Linksys WRT54G router runs a version of Linux in an open source distribution...
    Or a D-Link DNS 323 NAS box... there's quite an active hacking community using these boxes...

    The lack of mainstream media coverage of this issue is telling. They're not afraid to pass up a story if it's in their best interest to do so. I propose we force them to report on ACTA by kidnapping Kanye West, stripping him naked, tattooing "SETEC Astronomy" on his forehead, and launching him in a homemade balloon purchased by John Gosslin with the money he stole from Kate.

    wait, wait.... from what I read and from what I know about Slashdot...shouldn't the headline read "New Phoenix BIOS Starts LINUX boot in 1 second"?
    Or how about "New Phoenix BIOS Starts OpenBSD Boot in 1 second"? or even "New Phoenix BIOS Starts OS X Boot in 1 second"?

    From the wikipedia article on "Lithium": . Lithium batteries are not to be confused with lithium-ion batteries, which are high energy-density rechargeable batteries.
    So I'm thinking it was the old non-Lithium-ion batteries that you could get ribbons of Lithium metal from. TFA is discussion the -ion variant battery.

    Some day, in the not to distant future, we will all be paying money to our HSP (HTTP Service Provider), FSP (FTP Service Provider), VSP (VPN-protocol Service Provider), etc. etc.
    If I want to PING somewhere, well I guess I'll just have to open up an account with my neighborhood ISP *ICMP* Service Provider! :-)

    It's like the whole analog cellphone/scanner debacle
    People had been buying radio scanners for years and years and then it hit the news that some scanners could listen in on cell phone conversations...but even AFTER it was well known, there were still multiple politicians in various countries caught by "journalists" having cell phone conversations with supposedly confidential and/or secret content.
    Finally the feds made it illegal to sell scanners that could scan the analog cell phone range.... nobody actually fixed the problem. Now that we've (mostly) switched the world to digital cell phones, the interception risk isn't that big, but still, I agree with the parent post... "duh".

    Ummmm... whoever modded me funny: I was being serious. (except for the "get off my lawn" part)
    I cringe whenever I hear a young whippersnapper say "I built my own computer over the weekend" because "building a computer" to me doesn't mean slapping together pre-built parts.
    (yeah, yeah, and I'm sure someone will respond to my thread saying when they were young, they built their own transistors from the sand in their backyard and smelted their own copper wires and I should get off THEIR lawn. :-)
