I downloaded (via FTP - since the web was barely born) Linux v0.97 kernel, tools, C-compiler, etc. in 1992 for just one reason... to play the curses-text game "rogue" And today... I'm going to be downloading Jaunty Jackalope (yes, sorry I'm late) Ubuntu and likely playing nethack (based on rogue) later this afternoon. Things never change
Back in 1992 when I first started off with Linux, you downloaded two floppy images... you booted off one and halfway through the boot process you swapped disks... Since I lived in Victoria, Canada at the time, I was able to get the first distribution of a "packaged" ready-to-run Linux called SLS Later, I started using Slackware and kept using it until Ubuntu 6
Shhhh... it's a trick. The project plans were INTENTIONALLY put on a Internet-accessible worstation. The computer "spies" have actually downloaded detailed diagrams of a MASHUP of: the Wright Brothers plane, a Porsche 911, the winning America's cup sailboat, and the Apollo 14 command module. By the time they figure it out, it'll be 2018 and we'll be so far ahead technologically that nobody will catch us.
I like to work out in my rec. room with various exercise equipment. My favorite? The Carnot cycle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnot_heat_engine) I just hop on and convert all the waste heat in the room to useful energy
She can't very well hope to explain the entire conversation away, though. Any time you end a phone call with "this conversation never happened" it's hard to play innocent after the fact.
What? I do that all the time just for fun... see XKCD reference: http://xkcd.com/525/
Bush Tits are small sparrow-like birds. Boobies are (fairly large) seabirds. My web site will feature both and I'll make some noise when I get censored.
(yeah, yeah...right now, I've got the default "under construction" page up... I gotta find some material to put up on the website)
Ow ow... great now I have a fish hook AND a gummy bear in my ear. Let's see what I can do now... ummmm... I guess I need to find a river/lake/sea/ocean that has fish that like gummy bears...then while trying to eat the bear, they get caught on the hook and voila... I pull them all out. (five days later) I have a fish stuck in my ear now Well... at least I can understand what everyone's saying in whatever language they're saying it in. sigh...
Really... I have a VT100 terminal emulation program (MS-Kermit) running on a laptop which I use to connect up to the serial console on my VAX running OpenBSD. Yes, I use Lynx to surf the web. I'll be really upset if this is an April Fools story.
Can someone point me to some web site that will infect me? I feel that I'm missing out since I keep myself fully up-to-date with patches and run the latest anti-virus. Thanks
Yeah...when I saw it, I saw: (Japanese Astronaut Tests) (Stink) (Free Underwear) Which didn't make much sense, but I knew that probably astronauts write tests. And maybe they were giving away free underwear... I just couldn't figure out how "Stinks" fit into the previous two thoughts.
Just like (physical paper) newspapers, I expect brick and mortar general music stores to disappear completely in the next 10 years Already, the stores that I've gone into recently are selling more DVD and Blu-Ray movies than CDs and once higher bandwidth to the end-user/consumer is the norm (I'm in North America, by the way...not one of the areas known for blistering fast ISP deliveries) I expect movie sales to move on-line as well and the stores will have nothing to sell. Probably in 25 years (probably less, but I'm conservative)... even broadcast and cable TV may go away and ALL visual & auditory entertainment will be delivered on-line. We live in interesting times.
People, the parent is not the real kdawson (the editor). An editor has a little slashdot symbol next to his name. This guy has the username "kdawson (3715)" but actually has a very high user ID, 1344097.
Unless it's the REAL kdawson making it look like a fake kdawson is trying to imitate the real kdawson.
You know...the old double switcheroo trick?
Those Slashdot editors have great powers and could probably do it as they plan their world takeover
I'd like to point out that FFmpeg is what makes some open source multimedia apps (like MPlayer, Xine, VLC and Kdenlive) so versatile.
Thanks for that info. I was reading the Slashdot article summary, where it says: "As another reader points out, FFmpeg is what makes some open source multimedia apps (like MPlayer, Xine, VLC and Kdenlive) so versatile." and was hoping that some reader like yourself would point that out because that factoid is only mentioned once in the summary and thus is not obvious to people who only read the scrollbars on their window.
Yo mama is so fat...Illinois declared her a planet Yo mama is so ugly, astronomers who look at her think they're looking at Jupiter's moon IO Yo mama is so old, her boyfriends CARBON-date her Yo mama is so old and fat, her stomach is actually fusing helium with neon to produce magnesium just before she turns into a neutron star! Yo mama is so ugly, that when computer scientists look at her, they are immediately reminded of Edsger Dijkstra's letter "Go To Statement Considered Harmful" because they don't want to "Go To" her.
Ok, that last one got me severely beaten up on the playground when I was a kid, but the rest are funny and hardly trollish.
Geesh, in the six years that I've had a Slashdot account, this is the first time I've ever gotten a "first post" and I didn't say the usual "Frosty Pist" Sorry about that everyone... I know I let you all down
OK, maybe I'm naive and all elected officials are "evil" (tm) and continually scheming to become dictators, but this whole electronic voting thing keeps coming up over and over and over. Seriously, are elected officials really that stupid that they can't see the problems that keep coming up? (yeah, I know, somebody is going to reply to this with "yes"... I really don't believe it though). It seems like there is some kind of mental illness that takes over when people are elected that causes blinders to be put on that don't allow people to see the NEGATIVE consequences (or possible negative consequences) of the laws that they pass. This is basic CIVICS & history. In the US, members of congress don't even read the bills that they vote on anymore... how is this happening? Is there something broken in the system that is causing this?
Wow... God must exist and he must not be happy about having a particle... as soon as I hit "submit"... I got:

They always said there was no way that this could happen. They said that pigs would fly before this happened.
Well... Swine Flew

Here's a Usenet post from me in 1992 bitching about "I DON'T WANT TO HACK THE KERNEL"

And who fingerprints the analyzers who analyze the analyzers?

What we need is a "uber-bar" that puts all of the various other bars into a frame to help us out.
So, no white fuzzy cats, no sharks with frikkin' lasers, and it doesn't appear to be built into a volcano either.
What the hell?

You forgot to include a link to the comment you'll be writing later.
Maybe the power failed in the middle of him writing his comment?
Don't worry...it'll appear in some other Slashdot thread until CmdrTaco does a fsck.

Take that!
