The Navy Elf's office responded with this vitriolic press release:
Overcoming adversity is nothing new to Mr. Elf - he had to fight to get to the top at the North Pole, and he'll have to fight here to stay afloat at the Navy. Our team actually sees this as a golden opportunity to expose the corruption, pressure, and discrimination all the elves face daily...
As long as a human is writing the script / directing, it doesn't strike me as "All-artificial".
Now, once a computer, sensitive to the fact that the timing is profitable for "Shrek 12", kicks off "Hollywood.pl" to generate a movie, I'll be more inclined to give it the "All-artificial" tag.
Of course, the only ones who'll go and see it are machines on their lunch breaks...
Wait, this is the same U.S. government that gave us Amtrak and the USPS?
Don't go blaming the government because Americans prefer travelling cross-country in their own personal conveyances rather than using more efficient means of transportation.
Don't knock travel-via-USPS until you've tried it, buddy.
For example, use MMPlayer to play any one of the many full-length movies that would fit on a large card, using a Treo 600 (which albeit uses SD rather than CF).
Sure, if you want to say "Codec X is a 4.8/5" then that's meaningless. However, if the SAME PEOPLE rate X at 4.8 and Y at 4.6, we can say that X is better than Y.
To restate, we can't know anything about the absolute quality, but the relative quality between codecs is what we're interested in.
1 So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 2 But Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, became very angry with Job for justifying himself rather than God. 3 He was also angry with the three friends, because they had found no way to refute Job, and yet had condemned him. [1] 4 Now Elihu had waited before speaking to Job because they were older than he. 5 But when he saw that the three men had nothing more to say, his anger was aroused. 6 So Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite said:
"I am young in years, and you are old; that is why I was fearful, not daring to tell you what I know. 7 I thought, 'Age should speak; advanced years should teach wisdom.' 8 But it is the spirit [2] in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding. 9 It is not only the old [3] who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right.
10 "Therefore I say: Listen to me; I too will tell you what I know. 11 I waited while you spoke, I listened to your reasoning; while you were searching for words, 12 I gave you my full attention. But not one of you has proved Job wrong; none of you has answered his arguments. 13 Do not say, 'We have found wisdom; let God refute him, not man.' 14 But Job has not marshaled his words against me, and I will not answer him with your arguments.
15 "They are dismayed and have no more to say; words have failed them. 16 Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand there with no reply? 17 I too will have my say; I too will tell what I know. 18 For I am full of words, and the spirit within me compels me; 19 inside I am like bottled-up wine, like new wineskins ready to burst. 20 I must speak and find relief; I must open my lips and reply. 21 I will show partiality to no one, nor will I flatter any man; 22 for if I were skilled in flattery, my Maker would soon take me away.
Agreed. Humor in real life conversation is conveyed not only through words, but also through body language, tone, and context. In text, you have none of the first two, and the third can often be impaired.
While we're at it, we should add a flashing "Applause" sign to the writers toolchest!
IOW: We should stop blatantly telling the reader how to feel, and rather improve the writing to convey the emotion. This is of course wrt real writing, rather than droning on/. or IM:-)
If a bug is reported numerous times, it gives the engineers a feel for how widespread the problem is. Also, since components are usually fairly fine-grained, the engineer who screens the components bugs can usually locate dups fairly quickly.
IPv6 hasn't taken off because most routers can't fastpath IPv6 packets yet (can't route them in hardware), and need to special-case them in software which is much much slower.

How many more Olympics until I can finally watch water polo on my computer?
Any foreign TV stations broadcast their channel over the internet that just happen to be covering the Olympics?
Thanks,
Peter
I believe the algorithm was leaked a few days ago:
// double jam sandwich
if ((time == 8am-ish) || (time == 5pm-ish))
double jam =1;
if (city == LA)
long long jam = 2^64;

1) You can buy the one track you like for $.99; saves you $8.99!
... it's been mentioned here a million times.
2) AAC at 128 sounds great to me.
3) You do get the cover art.
4) Of course you can convert the AAC to MP3
...albeit for iTunes 3: Article 75451 :-)
Looks like lots of Rio, Nomad, and psa]play devices. Oh, and apparently the iPod too
Thanks,

...here - Looks like the new v3.0 now supports ssh2 rather than just ssh1.
The best ssh client for small Palm OS devices, IMO.

p.p.s. While I love Mach, and BSD; you've GOT to do something about all these Kernel Panics with SCSI CD-R/RW's installed in the machine.
Have you filed a bug report with the kernel panic on Apple's Bug Reporter page?
1) Not a single typo.. I guess whe you care, you can do it.. Now, care daily..

3) [...] A veritable harrem..
By the way, it's harem
Not to mention, you'd probably want to hack the OS in some way so that you could kill CPU-hog Aqua.
Log in as >console so that the WM never starts.
I'm just trying to point out that Apple's destop machine is not necessarily optimal for this kind of application.
Again, these machines will most likely be recycled as great desktop machines, where the modems/SuperDrives/GeForce4s/etc. will be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter
