Nursing: with this economy, many folks are jumping in because it's a "safe" job now BUT there will be a glut and employment will get bad - I don't care what the predictions say about population aging and whatnot. Talk to a nurse who's been in the field for at least 25 years and ask her about the late 80s - layoffs of nurses. Granted, if you were a laid off nurse, you weren't out of work for too long but....
There is also a trend to bring nurses from overseas. I know a nurse who works with many many foreign nurses. Add in the nurses that the military is training and I see employment problems down the road. Nurses don't have an organization like the AMA that's great at "discouraging" foreigners from coming over here.
My point, don't jump into a field because it looks like a shoe in for employment now - things change.
Just ask everyone who got CS degrees in the 90s or those of us who've hit 40 hoping to have their lifetime employment at 6 figures.

The clerks at the local Hollywood that closed said that theirs was the same way, but they would have a bunch of backup copies - the library doesn't.
But e-books have a super leg up when it comes to portability. I can carry the three books and the newspaper I'm reading in 8 ounces, or I can carry a pound and a half of paper.
And can you lend out one book without having to hand over the Kindle and subsequently your entire library?

the simple truth is that intellectual property is a completely flawed concept. it made sense before the internet when media had to be physically printed and physically distributed. much as the feudal system made sense when only a few could afford book knowledge
all that intellectual property has going for it now is legal and cultural inertia. it is of course completely philosophically untenable when media can be shared at zero cost at great distances with millions instantaneously. it will take time, but intellectual property is going down the tubes. the intartubes

And even then, if someone spends the time and money to develop something, I think they should get a temporary monopoly on whatever they invented. The thought of spending a lot of money and time inventing something only to have someone else just come by and copy it and profit from it - without any discipline or investment of their own - would enable people to leach without recourse. You can only create so much for the "greater good" before you have to pay your bills. And what's wrong with someone inventing something or writing something and getting rich off of their idea?
Look at any country with weak IP laws and innovation is stagnate or non-existent in those countries - most of the countries in Africa for example. Or if we look at China, we'll see folks very reluctant to expose their new technology in that country -there's a reason why only commodity technology is manufactured over there.

The kid will grow up with anxiety and depression - and we wonder why anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs are blockbuster drugs. And hopefully, the depression will get them to seek help before they do something like climb up into a bell tower and start shooting innocent people. Of course with the stigma on mental health, the person will have to pay cash to keep the shit out of the MIB - or at least the best they can - because employers look at it and if you have a mental health history, you become unemployable.
More than likely, the child will grow up feeling unease and purposeless while trying to fill the void with consumption (racking up the credit cards), prescription drugs and alcohol.

Back when Apple stopped shipping floppy drives with their computers just about 99% of 'manufactured' computers shipped with floppy drives. People said Apple was moving too fast. Now, a decade or so later, floppies have gone the way of the dinosaur.
