However, according to this site, Microsoft is going to support IE6 until September 2006. I'm not really sure what that means since they haven't updated the browser significantly in 2 years or so.

IE7 will be bundled with Longhorn, and people will likely continue to use whatever is bundled on their PC's... I don't see IE's dominance letting up anytime soon, despite Firefox being a superior browser (in my opinion).

While Sun's intentions in open sourcing their products may not be neccesarily benign, they ARE giving *something significant* to the open source communuity. The best example I can give is OpenOffice.

Sun does have it's own commercial office suite called StarOffice which is derived from the OO suite, however OO is being developed into a very well-rounded competitor.

NeoOffice/J for OS X is a great opensource alternative for MS Office, and that project has its roots in the OpenOffice suite.

  10. Clarification On Intel's "Press Release" on Intel Claims No DRM · · Score: 4, Interesting

This entire slashdot news post is misleading.

Intel's press release is based on the fact on that Computerworld's article claims that Intel is adding unnounced DRM features to their new line of Pentiums. If anyone actually read the article, it does not say ANYWHERE anything about unannounced DRM features. In fact, I would say that the Computerworld article and the Intel press release are saying basically the same thing, with their respective biases present. Honestly, the only thing newsworthy here is that Intel announced the specific DRM implementations in their chipsets.

Lastly, an opinion... DRM is not something I really would like to see implemented on the CPU-level. I don't think "THE MAN" should be controlling what I can or can't do with media that exists on my computer.

But take a look at a little gem of a game called Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater that also happened to be released in 2004.

Kojima's series has always been innovative in each incarnation, but I think this time he and his team outdid themselves.

Hunting for food, using trapped animals to distract or attack enemies, feeding enemies poisoned food, interrogating guards, holding them hostage, slitting their throats if you are so inclined... not to mention the new camoflague system that allows you to blend into the environment to prevent being seen.

Playing this game just feels so badass. I've never played anything like it in my life.

I felt as though this game deserved a mention in this thread, since in my opinion it's one of the more innovative titles to come out in recent memory :-)

It's important to note that while you can kill the spyware bundled with Kazaa, if you modify the Cydoor installation, then Kazaa will cease to function.

You're right. It IS Microsoft's fault that their OS is full of holes.

I'm trying to look at the situation from a business standpoint. It's very true that spyware is hurting Microsoft's market share in the browser market, but there are other types of spyware besides ActiveX applets run via exploits in IE. So while MS develops the next version of IE and simultaneously tries to develop Longhorn (with some anti-spyware features), they need to deploy a tool to combat all of the crap that the majority of the tech support phone calls complain about.

I'm no fanboy, and I hate the idea of paying for a tool that ideally should be free, but Microsoft paid a lot of money to acquire Giant, and they need to recoup their losses somehow and justify the purchase from an accounting standpoint. Personally, I'd continue to use BPS Spyware remover in addition to a good anti-virus program. If MS lowers their $100 price point for the software, to maybe somewhere around $19.95, I'd consider picking it up if it works well.

To me, the audio from these classic games is JUST AS important as the video, so I won't be overclocking until a better method is found that won't screw up audio.... but I'd imagine the bulk of people who still have *working* NES units, wouldn't want to mess around with their precious vintage systems anyways ;-)

GIMP, from what I understand, is an opensource Photoshop style program, used mainly for image manipulation and touching up photos.

Paint.NET, which I've been using recently, is more of a MS-Paint, replacement, and as kiddie as Paint is, it is still the most installed image program in the world (bundled with Windows since god knows when), I'm happy Redmond is taking steps to updating this program, and would not be surprised to see it included in Longhorn....

Oh and my point was not to knock GIMP, because I think in time, and with a better developed interface, GIMP will be king... it's to state that Paint.NET is for us folks who want to doodle, or want to create simple artwork, with a more powerful interface than MS-Paint, but without the sheer complexity of a monster graphics program such as Photoshop or GIMP....

The internet razor is here, and we got our hands on it first. The new I-Shick 1.0 is a welcome alternative to standard shaving, wax and depilatories that miss stray hairs.

Just shave your legs with the I-Shick and it memorizes your follicle patters. Then connect the Razor through a USB port or infrared to your PC. A 3-D model of your leg is uploaded to your own personal website where you can view it and a number of other leg-hair statistics. If you missed any hair, you can clearly see it on the internet.

Version 2.0 of the I-Shick will include upgrades such as armpit, face, and pubic mapping. Investing in I-Shick 1.0 and registering allows you to download ongoing software updates for a subscription fee of $9.99 per month. Free shaving cream is a gift with initial sign up.

At $2,019.99 for the razor and connectors, the I-Shick seems a little steep initially, but very comparable to the cost of laser hair removal treatments, without all of the trouble of leaving the house.
