We are animals, just a different species from bovine. In nature one species preys on another. That's life, that's death, that's nature - too bad.
Secondly, this is a capitalistic economy - if I want to eat meat and I can afford it, I'm going to buy meat and enjoy the hell out of it. Someone else makes a living preparing my steak and someone else makes a living growing my steak. The minute you tell me what I can and can't do, that's a dictatorship, and you're going to be at the angry end of a revolution.
And by the way, I also love venison. I shot a moose this year and it's some of the best meat I've ever eaten.

50 years ago venereal disease wasn't permanent and/or didn't kill you. There were no drinking and driving laws nor much social awareness of them. There was no terrorism. A family could be middle class and live comfortably off a single income. Insurance had no out of pocket cost and the employer paid 100%. College was affordable and there were virtually no student loans, meaning you could almost pay for it all by working yourself- full time in summer and part time during school. Governments and corporations did not engage in mass public spying - as a matter of fact a President resigned vs facing impeachment for spying. People cared about privacy, freedom had meaning and wasn't just a slogan. A car didn't cost 1/2 a years salary. People we not overly sensitive, we were emotionally tough and didn't get all bent out of shape over "politically correct" pointless crap. People were not afraid to speak their minds. News agencies broke news and were respected. The US education system was ranked the best in the world. US Healthcare was ranked best in the world. The US was respected by the rest of the word. Science, education and truth were goals to cherished and strived for.

  12. Of course our elected officials can overturn net neutrality – unfortunately, it’s a majority GOP and they live in a world that believes every single thing touched by Obama is poison and must be killed. Secondly, ALL of our representatives have collectively taken $101M from the communications cabal. Some of the GOP have introduced bills that even block State/Locals from implementing their own version of NN.
The sad fact is the only way to fix this is to get corporate money out of politics. Till we do, our information, resources, and people are up for grabs to the highest bidder/ lobbyist.

  13. ummmm.... nope.

  14. That's not good.... Your employer should have in place "business continuity plans", which, just like "disaster recovery plans" deal with bad "what if's" that can befall an organization. Business Continuity Plans include succession plans for key personnel and knowledge.
When to talk about your retirement is separate topic. Personally, as someone who's 55, I would give 6 months to a year notice, and would likely do some heavy planning way before that. For example I have accrued (c) 450 hours of sick time. I'm certainly not going out leaving that on the table. Some employers don't pay it out so you'll have to use it up before you go - hence, long term planning. Good luck and enjoy!

He had a unique perspective, and though I was never an apple fanboy, I appreciated his contribution to the craft of technology...I think that's the biggest change.. it's so seldom a craft anymore. The only long rang vision for young companies is to divine something cutsie and get swallowed by a big company getting rich in the process - no ownership of a piece of art or legacy that can improve the world.

  18. Unbalance Peering on Two Major ISPs Are Suffering Outages, Making the Internet Really Slow Right Now (slate.com) · · Score: 5, Insightful

I run a small ISP that uses Cogent as my primary upstream provider. Cogent and Verizon have been fighting literally for years over "unbalanced peering". Meaning, Verizon was throwing a fit because a majority of Cogent's traffic comes from Netflix and Verizon wanted some pay-ola to balance the peering. When Net Neutrality was in place, Verizon was forced to allow traffic.... but now that our friend Pai has removed that requirement, any upstream provider is free to extort any amount they want to restore traffic.

Calling them "contractors", no benefits, using their own vehicles, competing against each other to drive down cost - by the time you factor in all costs and taxes (of which independent contractors pay ALL), these are sub-minimum wage gigs. Driving someone you don't know to a place you aren't going for money isn't "ride share", it's a taxi. period. And the drivers are shorted the most. This isn't a win.

  24. Yes, the cabal of major ISPs (AT&T/Comcast/Verizon) are prohibited from carving the internet into a cable like system with Net Neutrality, preventing them from changing you by the "station", or in this case, site. Additionally, they want be able to develop "profiles" of your surfing habits and sell them to marketers without your knowledge or permission.

Of course, unlike cable providers, ISP's do not have to license or bid for content for rebroadcast. We as end users are already paying for content (netflix/prime/hulu subscriptions) and for the connections.
