Thanks for the link! This was probably the most well thought out article I've read on the issue. It gets away from the standard arguments and provides new insight. I found this little gem to be particularly interesting.
Q: Assuming your conclusion is right--that there is no evidence that illegal music downloads erode CD sales--and in fact might help top-selling record sales--what are the implications for the recording industry in terms of strategy?
A: Our research shows that people do not download entire CDs. They download a few songs, typically the hits that one would also hear on a Top 40 station. This suggests that P2P is much like the radio, a great tool to promote new music. The music industry has of course long recognized that giving away samples of music for free over the airwaves can stimulate sales. The same seems to hold for P2P.
Could this soon be the end of the ligitious RIAA? Probably not, but it's great to know that smart people are taking the issue to heart and producing thought provoking studies.
My office has a T1. We pay the premium for the guaranteed uptimes. Without an uplink to our home office, we can do NOTHING. The last time the link went down, Sprint was calling us within 5 minutes to explain the problem and give an ETA. Not that I don't personally think we're getting ripped off, but the last time my DSL service went down, nobody was calling me with an ETA....
That's great. However for the other 95% of the people who WILL use this as their only drive, I'd say it's important to know whether they're willing to back their product for 1 or 3 years.
I have a modded xbox. I soldered all the connections (the only way to securely do it). D0 is a bitch to solder though. This has got to be the BEST investment I made in my xbox. I have it hooked up to my home network. Now I can stream movies,mp3s, etc to my TV. This leaves my computer free to play games too. I run XBMC & am working on a new skin. I hate the Dell media center skin. They should've stuck with copying the MS skin...
Shareholders may or may not be citizens (you don't have to be a citizen to own stock). However, that point is irrelevant. It has already been shown that shareholders are guided by money. Whatever they think will give them the biggest return, that's what they buy. The overwhelming majority of those buying and selling stock are not guided by their personal morals. So let's upfront about this. As a citizen, I am upset that my government has allocated and "joined forces" with other countries to enforce something view by most as a minor offense. To have such a large amount resources towards a crime that I and many others beleieve is far less important (thus should have less resources allocated for it) is a slap in the face. Let me get this right, the FBI can get their shit together to put some punk WaReZ KiDDieZ in jail, but when the stakes are higher, suddenly they drop the ball?!
In light of recent DoJ (read - FBI) fumbles (to put it nicely) regarding issues that we DO view as important (terrorism, violent crimes, defrauding millions of individual investors out of BILLIONS of dollars)seems more like a diversion to so that DoJ brass can say "Look! We stop evil-doers!" Let's not forget, the DoJ recently had a mistrial declared in one of their "star" fraud cases against TYCO head Louis Kozlowski. What we're voicing is that we're unhappy with the way the DoJ brass has chosen to allocate resources and selectively enforce the laws and we want change.

Soulseek is primarily electronic music, almost entirely out of reach of the RIAA as the overwhelming majority of music isn't "owned" by the RIAA, therefore they could care less.

I find it amusing that people are challenging me on this - if there is anything I am well versed in, it is nutrition and performance and the science behind it.
I am not challenging you; just asking for additional information (to which you supplied) since we're all strangers. Without sources (or a pointer to them) your original comment held little weight. Now that you've provided something to help back up your claims, everyone can learn.
Since both my parents are on Atkins and have had good success, I read your original comment and wanted to forward them the info, only you had yet to provide it. Again, thanks for the heads-up.

Just because it happens to be more prevalent in the computing industry is not to say that we shouldn't be outraged by this. If I were selling widgets and claimed that my widget was better than any other widget based upon X, Y, & Z specifications. Now, I also send out samples of my widget to various media outlets and have them praise my widget as the greatest. Again, I am claiming X, Y, & Z specifications. The units I send to the media actually do meet all the specs, so it would be disingenuous to blame the media since they gave their reviews based upon what they were given by me.
Now, my widget (which also happens to contain the great legalese of "specifications subject to change without notice" helps as a first line against possible backlash) is released to the general public, only it doesn't live up to specs X, Y, & Z. Still, my widget does very well. The reason for the success of my widget is due in no small part to the glowing reviews not the specs I (and others whom I have deceived) have been spouting. To a reasonable person, it could be considered attempted fraud....at best. Bait & switch is an old trick. It IS effective, right up to the point that the truth is exposed. As a current customer of Samsung, I must express my dismay at this revelation. Should it be true,(I want an official release from Samsung to determine how much "spin" is added) not only will I no longer buy Samsung products, I will withhold recommending their products to EVERYONE that utilize my services.
Samsung's decision to "fudge" the specs has cost them not only MY business, but also the business of all my clients. If Samsung doesn't want to be upfront and honest to me about regarding their products, I don't want to buy their product. Which is really a shame too because I recommend a lot of Samsung's products because they hit the sweet spot between performance & price for many of my customers. If and when they decide to stop their deceptive practices, I'll think about recommending them again (because in the end, all geeks really want is the latest & greatest widgets at the cheapest prices).
I don't believe that medical terminology & medical journals contain a lot of terminology that change over time. Most medical words are latin-based and fairly rigid in their usage. A tibia is a tibia is a tibia. What the doctor has created is very specific application to skim a very large (volume) of information and report back things that might be of interest. You are correct that an "instinct" would be much more useful. This does not however make the doctor's accomplishment any less viable.
Is text mining new? No.
Is text mining through medical journals to help you stay on top of breast cancer research new?
I have an L-shaped desk and I have my 21" monitor, on the large end, and I have a little 17" monitor atop 2 books and recessed to the right. I found that having the tops of the monitors at the same level made a huge difference when even just glancing over at the second monitor. I didn't have to re-find my location if the tops of the screens are the same.
Does KaZaA really have the financial resources to launch a successful legal attack on the RIAA? I mean, the media conglomerates are rolling in dough. I've never really understood KaZaA's business model and find it hard to believe that they stand a chance. Regardless of merit, the RIAA have got to have some killer lawyers.
I'd say they have enough money only if everyone went back to using kazaa instead of kazaa lite....then maybe.;)
OMG! That is an awesome quote. I just read it to my roommate (he's black & gay, talk about minority of a minority) & he just went "For real! That's for damn sure! I've never met a single white person who'd want to trade places with a black, no matter how rich or powerful he was".

Sorry, but with DVD's priced at about $5(Wal-Mart)-$15(Kroger) currently, I'd say the MPAA is learning from the RIAA's mistakes. I can buy movies where I buy groceries. I'd say the MPAA is leaning towards an impulse buy model more than a sue your customer model.
As you seem to be so hard-line on this issue I would ask you to please remember that these people have not been convicted of anything either. We are not at the punishment phase. If you're going to make such a bold black/white (and IMHO wrong) statement please do the community a favor & let's at least give the ACCUSED their RIGHT to defend themselves. You may believe that those accused are guilty; however, they still have a right to defend themselves against their accusers. They are accused of copyright infringement. Until such time as they have been convicted of said infringement, let us at least determine the merits of the case...BEFORE we hang them.
