Actually, I believe that most "clever" technology is designed with the presumption that the end user does not CARE about the details of how it's done. They just want it done. And there is nothing wrong with that logic. That type of logic keeps a good portion of the/. crowd in business.
That aside, I have knew someone that lived on a farm with high levels of some diarhhea inducing organism in their well water. They were essentially immune to it, but they found they had to keep a few gallons of bottled water on hand for guests who always got sick.
ITS has implemented web access controls for the Corporate Division to block web sites that are generally not business related. If you have an ongoing legitimate business need to access this site then you will need department head approval to unblock the site. Please send an e-mail message to your department head with the web site address and state the business reason access is required. Your department head should then forward the e-mail to the ITS Customer Support Center.
Instead of just bitching about it in typical slashdot trendiness, why not HELP OUT by subscribing & submitting these things to the online editor/dupe checker? I know that after the April Fool's day bit with the dupes they have cracked down HARD on fixing the duplicates in addition to cross-referencing these to older "similar to" stories.
Sorta... As I recall, dvdjon lifted/discovered/whatever one of the original keys from a hardware dvd player. That was the basis of the reverse engineering. IANAL or an engineer for that matter so I'm not sure how "the key" plays in to all this.
A truly "clean-room" version of DeCSS would make this a null issue.....IF it weren't for the DMCA which makes it illegal to reverse-engineer a copy-protection scheme.

The ads may be at the bottom, but if the 542 links are more relevant to what I'm looking for than google's 57,500,000 pages, which is the better search engine?
Standard disclaimer Google is God. I love Google. Google(tm) is a "Good Thing"(tm). Long live Google! I just wish Google was.....well, BETTER!
Why should a company from which you are unlawfully using their product give even a flashing glance to those users? As far as I'm concerned personally, that's your tradeoff by using a "WaReZ" copy. You want to make sure that you can get updates? Okay, BUY the damn thing then. Until that is done, you don't deserve their time.
And for the record, XP can be successfully updated, even pirated copies.
In general though, I agree with you that win32 users are clueless & don't "get it". I spend all day & all night helping them. So far, I have 19 "friends" whom I have had to hand-hold through it.
How does the software determine if it is running a legitimate copy?
If it is a type that detects cracked copies, what's to stop cRk_fOObAR_v1.0afixed.exe from disabling the "phone home" function and/or make it give incorrect information?
The non-conspiracy theory answer is that Nvidia was the unhappy one in this relationship. Thus far, the xbox has failed to generate the kinds of numbers hoped for by Nvidia given the amount of time/effort invested in this project. Nvidia was the uninterested party, not Microsoft.
What makes the fact that it's done online different than IRL?
I agree with that this provides for substantial potential for abuse. However, as the example cited in the paper of Coke machines and the price-adjusting according to temperature, proves that it's really a matter of spin. Had Coca-Cola successfully controlled the media surrounding it, they may have been able to get away with it.
I think that all people have a a general sense of what's fair. And while it may vary greatly on some issues, for most issues most people can agree.
In order for it to be determined illegal, they would have to charged and convicted. Until then, they are simply accusations, which MAY or MAY NOT be true. Also, I don't see any major corporation arguing due process. I could see an individual doing so, but corporations aren't interested in constitutional arguments.
Yeah, I heard McDonald's is interested in those on the list.;) Seriously though, as I *live* in Houston, this is seriously fscked up. I wasn't in HISD but the few of my friends that were hated it. The 3rd largest school district in the nation. And I think the 3rd worst too.
I remember that episode! That was too funny. They show up to deliver their prize, compliments of the Dewercs Corporation. The look on that one guy's face... I think he was more upset he wasn't getting the TV than going to jail...
I would be more inclined to agree if the skillset they're looking for was technical, however I don't see them trying to employ the same bunch they're trying to catch.
I just don't see the RIAA having a bunch of volunteers rushing for this job....that said, how would the RIAA ensure that their little tattle-tales are giving them correct data? I see too many plausible scenarios where this would be too much of a liability...
Besides, many ISPs aren't exactly happy now with the RIAA in light of all the takedown notices they're being made responsible for...think about the bandwidth use/over-use fights right now...
Come on now... I realize that it's the weekend and all, but honestly....suggestions for teaching board games? I think now we're just posting stories to have new stuff on the front page (please hold all "witty" comments regarding/. & dupes for another thread)
With a story like this, I almost mistook it for an SNL skit Delicious Dish
I had a something similar in my office occur recently. Apparently someone sent a "cute" email to one of the people in my office (you know, pretty background, smileys, etc), and so they installed it. Within 2 days, 40 people in the office had installed it. And within 2 more days, they were yelling and screaming at me asking why "the internet" was soo slow.
I discovered that hotbar had hijacked their IE & outlook. Every time they sent an email, or clicked on a site, hotbar would try and call home, only the site was down and they had to wait for the timeout before passing it back to IE to say so. I uninstalled hotbar, and mAjIkAlLy their problems disappeared.
I told them all if they installed some crap like that again I would reccommend them for "restricted" (a list of about 100 approved sites) internet access . So far, none of them has installed it. Hmm... maybe it's because I added hotbar's ips to the firewall... >:)
=D
Please refer to this story.
Google will also pop-up a plethora of related type stories, though most are written by the zealots and are about conspiracies.

Really? That's interesting. I don't see them outlawing light bulbs, but I can see them regulating them out of existence.
Thanks for the info! Learning something....on slashdot?! Who'd have thought...

Expect a strong government push to make the move, possibly including taxes or outright bans on the old bulbs.
That is a pretty bold statement. Do you have any links that I can link to for verification?
My only question is with google.com (as with others like teoma, fast, inktomi, alltheweb) is how many of those are

Visibone carries free color blind palettes for photoshop, etc...
Also, required reading for anyone wanting to see just how color blind people see.
You know, long as i've been here i'd forgoten about the "collapse sections" preference... hahaha. my bad.
so, are you ever gonna change this color scheme? make it less....bright?

Obligatory smart ass reply:

When was the last time you met a low life who actually believed they were a low life? (posters to slashdot don't count)
