  1. Re:Repairs Anyone? on GM's Billion-Dollar Fuel-Cell Bet · · Score: 1

GM is not building the next generation of Fuel Cell based cars to help out the enviroment. They are just like many greedy corporations, they will make money of the parts, service and maintance industry for a fuel cell powered car. Remember folks, industrial factories are still the leading pollution and natural resource draining offenders.

In pre-industrial Europe people were lucky to live to their mid-20s. The average life-span of someone born in the US in 1900 was about 49 years; now it's around 78, a rise of over 25 years in the course of a mere century. Anyone over 30 years of age today, give a silent 'Thank you' to the nearest, grimiest, sootiest smokestack you can find.

Which basically means that since there is so much fewer crap in the way, they have much more freedom with the outer design of the car. They are no longer restricted as far as seat placement and hood/trunk designs in general.

Actually they are still quite restricted for their design. Look at the footprint for parking spaces, garages, etc. A round car where all the passengers can sit in a circle and face each other would be great for playing poker on road trips, but you wouldn't be able to stash the car anywhere once you arrived.

There would be a nice chicken-egg issue until our car infrastructure was adapted for different sizes and shapes.

I most respectfully disagree about this review. It gave me exactly what I needed to know to decide if the book might be something I would want to invest my time in.

Of course, I also loathe movie trailers that give away most of the plot. From any summary medium like a review or a trailer, I want to know what the subject matter is about, not the details of what the subject matter is.

Ow... I think I accidentally got Zen there for a moment and gave myself a headache...

I've been thinking about picking up one of these new recorders, but hadn't decided which yet. I do NOT like that TiVo think's it's ok to grab that kind of control over MY property.

I think I just made up my mind, unless anyone has any strong pro-TiVo or anti-ReplayTV information?

I suggest a strong dose of research. The Tivo Community is a great place to start for the Tivo side of the equation. For example, the site will explain how these promo recordings do not in any way interfere with your regular recording. It is just more information that Tivo sends to you, like the channel listings or "system mail".

I went through the DVR eval routine about 2 months ago and settled on Tivo because of overall ease of use, and features-per-dollar. The menus and interface on Tivo seemed much easier to use, but your mileage may vary. ReplayTV has the commerical skip and other features, but nothing that balanced out the price and other oddities.

Either way, just make sure you're basing your decision on healthy research and not a spot reaction to a headline on /.

I've been annoyed by ads, but never enraged. You might be more finely attuned to the subliminal mind control messages than I am.

All seriousness aside, I am a happy DirecTivo owner, and while this is a nuisance it really isn't that big of a deal. Tivo lets me watch the best quality programming on satellite (IMHO) at the time that is most convenient for me. The promo is not using up normal recording space, so the only cost to me is the added photons comprising the show listing going into my eyeballs, only to be ignored by my brain.

Spam in Hotmail costs me time to work around, it takes up my storage space, and forces me to use ergs managing it. I'd rather NOT have the promos, but I'm not going to fall on my sword (or DVR) about it.

You'll also find that Empire Strikes Back is number 17 on IMDB, and I know many people, myself included, who feel it is the best of the SW movies. But a conclusion? Heck, it ended with a main character abducted, betrayal then help of a friend, the group split up, a hero in turmoil, and evil in control. Uh... sounds more like FOTR than I thought...

Anyway, I think Hollywood pushes too hard to wrap movies up with a bow. A good movie is a snapshot of life somewhen/somewhere else, and life doesn't always resolve things neatly.

Bruce is one of the most genuine "showbiz" people I've ever met or even heard about. I met him at a book signing in Phoenix a few months ago. He was articulate, genuine, and funny. He stayed to sign autographs for oer 5 hours! The bookstore was past it's closing time but he had the employees stay until every single fan had their book (or Ash action figure, or DVD, etc) signed. Why he doesn't have an arm like Popeye from all those autographs, I have no idea.
