Someone very dear to me, got scammed out of almost 100k USD. The person I am talking about is not an ignorant idiot, infact he is a well educated architect, with almost 30 years of experience in business.
The tricked him, and showed him the actual money (he traveled there, TWICE), set up a FAKE banking website which would show him that his account in that "~Internet Bank~" is 21 mil USD.
And kept on sucking on his money with excuses of paper work for this, bribe for that, etc.

He got greedy, and they abused that to the maximum.

Conclusion, these ppl are PROFESSIONAL, they actually study your character, your habits, etc, and a person has to be really smart not to fall for it. Infact, come to think of it, you have to belive that fairy tales dont exist anymore, you want 21 Mil USD, you freaking work your ass off.

All I have to say is, that in all the examples you just gave, you used mother nature to cope with the difficulties it gave. In some cases you are using the means that you just know about(not very efficient, hence screwing you with it), maybe tomorrow you will find other means, also provided by mother nature.

Giving examples to begin with is not very helpful, because it will be missing the other half of the story.

I am participating already, but thank you for your kind invitation.

I do not agree that mother nature is "unnecessarily" cruel.

I am surprised that you are a DBA....had a look at 10G, did you realize how many times you read the word automatic in the release notes , lets count a few:
    1) Automatic memory managment , DBA's spent weeks and nights to configure their memory, now its automatic
    2) Automatic storage managment, if you have'nt heared about that, then its a nifty piece of SW
    3) Automatic segment managment...the name says it all

BTW, because of all these features, oracle is expensive, the closest RDBMS is miles away from its fucntionlity, and invoative ppl (sleep cat and the like, sibel, etc), are bought...and to prove good intentions, Oracle takes over the support of the bought companies, whether sleepycat, peoplesoft, sible, synopsis, what ever..cause they can afford it, and cause they are after ur money...ITS CALLED BUSINESS

I have seen lots of businesses where financing IT was not an issue of money (within reasonable limits ofcorse), and they just migrate to Linux for the speed, or the stability, and in some cases belive it or not, because some apps will run better on Linux than any other platform.

Claiming that Linux is cheaper is a myth, it is NOT cheaper, where I work we spend millions of $'s on Linux clusters, support from RH, Novell, IBM. So linux is not cheaper, it is simply a BETTER option.....at least most of the cases.
Besides, which idiot will risk his business going down for an IT mistake just beucase it is cheaper..
