Well, in an African/Middle East country (no names), the prime minister actually signed a multibillion contract with MicroSoft to supply Software for govermental reasons. Here is what i see:
1) The deal was a total ripoff, technically speaking the e-gov as we may call it as WAAAAAAYYYY behind. And the money paid is worth much more than what is being supplied.
2) The system is not reliable enough, so gov. personals still do things by hand (yes, you can stand in a que of 50 persons just to get one lousy signature, or pay a 50 cent fee).
3) From the looks of it, they still have a very long way ahead of them till they get things in shape.
4) Finally, this deal was done almost 4 years ago, and this is the current status, how much time do they need..
Thats what i call a rip of, personally i see the problem as "unqualified technically enough ppl take technical decisosns, thinking he is the wisest ass on earth", putting the tax payers money at stake (i bet he would rethink the decision if it was his own damn money.)
I have an Compaq armada M700, with a 766 processor,256Ram. Like the IBM pal up there, "it never let me down" too. I have RH8 linux on it, and its so reliable. No problem with the hardware, the materials used are good (not excellent, but good)... Though i think the Thinkpad is better though(havent owned one, but i tried it, and its quite good.)
Did you ever do business??? Imagine your self buying a 10 million $ project, you would not pay one single penny unless you are 100% sure that every thing is clear, and figured out, otherwise you have a dozen other things to invest in.
every linux supporter is somehow being effected by this SCO/Linux issue. Even YOU as a system admin. or programmer are. I mean i am a linux programmer where i work, and devlopers form the other side(MS dev.) keep on asking, whats up with this SCO thing, so are you planning to go back to Visual c with a wide smile.. . PERIOD..out of subject..
what i wanted to say is, companies like IBM, SUN, Oracle, Redhat, Suse and others are losing money, credability, business, and are instead gaining lots of headache, questions, bla bla bla...
Why the fuck dont they just group, put an end to it. They already spent billions in investments on Linux, espically IBM and Oracle(who supported Linux clustering), if they care for their business and investments, they should act, and FAST, before this thing really grows and starts to actually draw back customers who had linux on their considered solution list, knowing that Linux opened new business grounds for them, and they cant deny it, they owe linux exactly s much as linux owed them...
decomissioning AIX, Solaris and IRIX systems to deploy Linux instead of them. And i am talking BIG systems here. 60 AIX nodes, almost 200 Solaris nodes, and almost 50 IRIX nodes (these are round figures, please dont let me open the file with the actual numbers). All of this is being layed down for the favor of 4 Linux clusters, which after testing proved to be faster(but not as stable, but we are working on it). Ofcorse we have an inhouse Linux support team(I am one of them)
Now Linux support is needed, espically when migrating applications from UNIX to Linux, you are gonna go through a 24/7 live nightmare.(dont belive the crap "unix/linux migration is easy", cause its not)
Bottom line, support is needed, but not necessiraly contracted support, but all in all, if you dont have a trained team, you just simply cannot go on.
There are several sizes of that mini keyboard, and the layout is the same as the regular keyboard.
The only difference is that the keyboard surface is also a touch mouse pad, which in my opinion actually is easier. The hand movement from a regular kb to a mouse can be quite frustrating sometimes(ofcorse if espically use X, or even windows)..
I mean i am a Keyboard user, i dont use the mouse often, but sometimes i am just stuck on shortcuts or moves, and i have to, and its frustrating... thats the whole point of it i guess..
And by the way.. this subject have been on/. before..
well my pal, i am sorry to tell you that i am not an American, in fact am an Egyptian, where the description you are detailing up there, is like a joke here in Egypt. The situation here is much worse...Just trust me on it...;)But what i am saying is this:
For the sake of humanity to prosper, we should be using each others ideas, "The American Dream" you call it made up capitalism, and it went all the way to patent even freaking THOUGHTS.. i mean shit, now i cant even think of eating a pizza without wondering will pizza hut allow me to eat pizza or not.
Ofcorse most of would say that "For the sake of humanity...." is CRAP.. but i dont think it is.. i think that all of this is gonna come to an end soon, made by humans, destroyed by humans, and i f i can rephrase that, made by greed, and destroyed by greed.....
Mod me down and the pyrmaids bad luck will haunt you...and i am not kidding...:) or am I..
"# Oracle, IBM, and some of the largest software development companies in the world have billions riding on Java"
They will do they same with.NET, companies like these tend not to choose or bargin over a technology, they just simply support them all. They cannot afford to go wrong, they just move in all directions, they can afford it...
Did any body count the number of patent issues listed on/. today.:
1) The one you are reading
2) SCO vs Linux (ofcorse, this is the daily speical)
3) Chip Firm Hit By 45-Year-Old Patent
4) Nextel Claims Trademarks On "Push To Talk" and "PTT"
And yet more to come through the day..
What is this world comming to, is the whole planet gonna be owned by a bunch of people? I think this is something we should be aware of, you cannot work on a single project now (even for your own pleasure), without VIOLATING one of the patents without you ever noticing.. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM...
You dont want to go on cause your so short on money or what ever, thats fine, its your call. BUT... someone else should pick up where you left, I suggest posting the project for adoption if i may say. You do wanna see your baby live, despite the fact you cant feed it, dont you. So i suggest you document the thing really good, as to make it easier for the next generation of coders to do a good job.
I am working as a consultant for the past 6 months for a large firm, through a contracting company(like your's), well, to me as a consultant, its good money, and good experience(ofcorse the exoerience part depends on the project). One draw back though is, consider the following scenario:
I am here in this company as a consultant, working on code that was made by another conultant before me(and left), the code is not understandable, no one in the firm understands or knows shit about it, and you as a contracting company should solve the problem, and me as a consultant in the firm by your contracting company should magically SAVE BOTH YOUR ASSES, SO BOTH OF YOU FUCK OFFF......:)
Hope you know what i mean now..
/*True story, based on the life of a geek under fire*/
On a compaq proliant server with a 500 Gig RAID 3 configuiration. The firmware did all the mirriroring. The performance was not bad at all, in fact i didnt realize any downsides. One more thing i tested is adding physical volumes to the array, and as posted above (it was transparent to the users, they didnt even feel the difference), which is good.
its gonna pay LOTS of money, I wonder even if its worth it. IBM already spent lots of money on Linux investments, and i dont think its gonna pay a lot more. The question is how mych are they willing to give, and how much are SCO willing to take (they started the bid @ 1 Billion, which is quite an exageration infact).
