Yes! I'm an active member of the Charlotte, NC music scene and I have been exposed to the most incredible, talented bands I have ever heard. The scene here is a lot better than most places, especially if you're into hardcore, but everywhere has something. Go support your local artists. If you hear something you like, buy a shirt or a CD or just give the band a compliment when you see them. I've heard so many good bands and met so many cool people. Get off your ass and stop whining about how the RIAA is taking away your rights and go out in your community and circumvent the whole system.

    You will be suprised.

  6. Exactly on Alternatives to the Entertainment Industry? · · Score: 2

I've been fed up with pop culture and the entertainment industry for quite some time. Over the past few years I have been heavily into independent and underground music. I love it! There is so much good music and raw talent out there that is completely independent of the mainstream stuff.

I just moved into a big city (Charlotte, NC) that has a great, vibrant music scene. There's so many exciting things going on and so many great bands. There's so many shows that the only problem I have is deciding who I want to go see on that night. The best advice I can give to anyone who is sick of the crap on the radio is to get out of your house and go see some local bands play. Some of my favorite bands from Charlotte (like Hopesfall and Beloved) are just starting to get big beyond our little music scene. Shows are fun - you will suprised and you'll meet a ton of new people. Plus it's cheap :)!

If you're in North Carolina checkout ncmusic.com for show listings. Most areas have similiar sites. If not, just check in your paper or at an independent record store.

  7. Re:Many players not compatible with CD-RW on Dension DMP3 MP3 Player Reviewed · · Score: 2, Informative

As I understand, most MP3 CD players can read CDRW discs. I got a Rio SP90, by no means a high end MP3 player, for Christmas. It plays any CD or CDRW I've thrown at it. I think you can get SP90s for like $60 now.

A tip for any of those considering the Rio MP3 CD players - don't spend an extra $50 or so dollars to get the SP100. The only difference is upgradeable firmware. This problem with the SP90 can be fixed with a simple change to the upgrade file.

MP3 CD players are great. I've got about 20GB of MP3s. Before school or a long car trip I burn about 10 CDs on a disc and have more than enough music for the rest of the day. Since I always use CDRWs and most of my friends have burners, I can always score some new music if I'm at a friend's house.

  8. Re:RoadRunner on How Much Does Your Broadband Cost? · · Score: 1

I'm almost using Roadrunner but it runs for $40/month here. The download speed is pretty good - i've gotten up to 2.5Mbs before. I also run my personal website off of it and it's just as fast as the host my friend pays $20 a month for.

I hear a lot of horror stories about horrible cable access but it's great here.

Yes! PHP's online manual is great. The function reference is the most useful online reference tool I've ever used. Everyone says "dead tree" or "online" why not both? I would gladly pay $5 more for a dead tree programming manual if it can with a CD of something similiar to php.net/manual.

  14. Re:Hardware Support... on Ogg Vorbis RC3 Released · · Score: 1

Actually I love my Rio. It's one of the CD-MP3 players. If I rip my CDs with lame --r3mix they sound perfect, and the Rio does a good job of playing them back. I've got a minidisc player and I got sick of waiting an hour to get an hours worth of music on disc. Plus I don't have the money to shell out to get a soundcard with a digital out, so I had to bother with setting levels and all that. I much prefer taking 5 minutes to burn 15 hours worth of music on a CD. Ogg's great and all, but MP3 is the standard.

I love OSS as much as everyone else here, but sometimes it's just not practical.

  15. Re:Hardware Support... on Ogg Vorbis RC3 Released · · Score: 1

This is why I don't use OGG. Yeah, it sounds great and it's free in the true sense, but if I can't play it on my new RIO SP100 it's no use to me.

For now I've learned to live with MP3. lame --r3mix produces almost perfect MP3s that are more than good enough for me. Checkout r3mix.net for more info.

Just to further elaborate on the music aspect...

At my highschool I have a teacher who plays classical stuff while we take tests or do classwork. She says that studies show your work improves if you listen to classical music, preferably something with strings, at around 60bpm. For all you non-musicians that means slow violin music. I personally like Bach chorales (my mind just went blank on how to spell that..) because they're so beautiful. Ask a friend if you don't know anything about classical music for suggestions.

  22. Just give up on On the Problems with Laptops in School? · · Score: 1

There is no way to stop students from goofing off in class with their computers. I'm in a Network Administration class at my highschool and believe me, we've gotten around everything the teachers have thrown at us. Despite some of the computers being almost unusable except for starting Word, we still listen to music, play games, instant message, and all the other things besides schoolwork.

For the majority of students, they don't have the experience to figure out ways around things but in my Networking class, which is all geeks, when you start putting up barriers it's almost a challenge to see if you can get around it. I'm sure there are a few of these kids in your school too.

If kids don't want to pay attention they're not, computers or no. Just accept that just like some kids will daydream or sleep through all their classes, some kids will be emailing each other.
