'The EU Commission, under the leadership of someone who previously failed as Portuguese prime minister'
If you look at the members of the EU commission you'll find that they have all failed in some pretty important political appointments. The EU commission is where the failures who can't be offered a cushy post in their own countries, because of the outcry it would provoke, are pushed off to on the quiet in the hope that no one notices that they are still around cocking thigs up
I was a Red Hat user for a few years, both at work and at home. I bought Red Hat in boxes. After the change to RHEL/Fedora, I've gone over to Ubuntu for home use. I've wanted to move to Debian for years and this seemed like an easy way to do it. And delighted with it I am.
I now regard any RedHat announcementa with the same yawning indifference that I regard Microsoft announcements
The main courses may have improved in the restaurants but the side vegetables served with any meal are without exception inedible. Unless you go to a good vegetarian restaurant. Cooking vegtables properly is the one thing that british chefs can't do.
Nobody, unless the are really, really stupid, pays full price for a licenced copy of MS-Office. There's always some discounting scheme you can take advantage of.
And another important point is that if nobody is learning C anymore who's going to write all these Virtual Machines and libraries that these Java/.net wimps need just to write a "hello world" program, eh?
I'm waiting for the Hollywood version of "Dennis the Menace" starring Sylvester Stallone as Dennis, Kevin Spacey as Dennis' Dad and Brad Pitt as Walter. Gnasher will, of course be provided by Hensons Animatronics.
NB. US readers should not confuse Dennis the Menace from the "Beano" with the rather lame, tame Amercian copy of the same name.
The reaon nearly all projects, that fail, fail, whether it is software, bridges, business transformation, or simply moving house, is inadequate risk management. Risk management is the one fundemental process that any sane PM must be able to use.
As a PM I spend around 30-40% of my time managing risk. I've never had a project fail yet

Unlike the yanks who really splah out on o-rings, tiles and bits of foam....
Nothing to do with handedness, that's just the way wome are. You'll realise that as you get to know more of them:-)

I'm pretty right-wing and I think that your society is class based. I say "your" because I'm from the UK, but US society is just as class based as that if the UK. It just that yours is based on other factors than ours.
Ours is based on birth, property, who you know and are related to, and to a greater extent nowadays, celebrity. Yours seems to me to be based on money, education and power. But whether your right or left, libertarian or authoritarian you can't deny the existence of "class" attitudes.

I'm British and the food served in most pubs is invariably shite.

What is wrong with it is that software patents don't encourgae innovation and only enable the patenter (not you or I) to profit from it.
The people on this committee have no idea about agriculture either.
In the UK, and in most parts of Europe, all goods come with a one year guarentee. They won't get away with "you're SOL" excuses here.
No I'm mocking Hollywood :-)

Just in time to see Scotland lose to the japanese robots in the World Cup Final.
Has she never read Slashdot !?
Anyway, around scantily clad women nearly all men behave like Beavis and Butthead, not just techies
Hover cars ????
I expected a flying car, or a jet pack at the very least.
And you forgot Professor Nuclear Power: "...and in the future electricity will be so cheap it won't even show up on your meter"
There's something wrong with my fucking meter. as well

On the contrary.
It's often said that OBE stands for "Other Bugger's Efforts".
A friend of mine was recently awarded the MBE. He claims that it stands for "My Bloody Efforts"
Cold hearted ?
No, you're an unfeeling, selfish, arrogant, name-dropping, cold hearted cunt. That's what you are?
upmarket ?
Either this doesn't mean what you think it means or you haven't visited Gateshead
It may be correct but using it instead of burgle still makes you sound thick

"why a gender"
I think you mean "sex". Gender is a grammatical term and nothing to do with whether one is biologically a male or female.
It's used in the US and UK by people who think "sex" is a naughty/evil word.
