I dunno, maybe my experience was different. When Charter came over to install the HD cable boxes (had been running the normal digital services), not only did they bring component cables over, but they even went out to run another line to the house (they said that having HD and cable internet could cause problems only on one line, since we had two TVs and two boxes). I didn't need the component cables at the time (had my own set), but they just let me have them. The installers mentioned that they thought the DVI port on the box was active, but that the company didn't supply cables for it. So, the installers I had knew what they were doing.

Agreed. I put my old 2G iPod in my pocket, without keys and eventually it was all scratched to hell. Not a big deal (I expected it, don't really stare at the display that much and the display is still readable), but it doesn't surprise me. If I wanted to keep it from getting scratched, I would have bought a case for it.

Actually, I find that most of the time, companies won't pay for shipping to them, but you don't have to pay them to ship the replacement back.

If you ever see the phrase in the warranty "postage pre-paid", that just means that you need to send the old unit back and pay for the postage on that, as opposed to sending it and having the company pay for the shipping when it's delivered. If you send it that way (not paying for postage and sending it along, with the postage to be collected when the package gets delivered), expect to get the package right back. ^_^

Anyway, Dewalt tools are more than just B&D painted yellow and given a new name. They are built tougher, and last much longer than their home-use counterparts.

Let's see how far we can recurse the topics in this thread.

Uhh...yeah, I did. The parent post I was replying to was that there is a substantial difference in between B&D and DeWalt; I'm not disputing this. What I am pointing out is that when B&D sold the same tools that DeWalt is selling now (the higher quality, more rugged tools), they didn't sell, because of the perception of B&D as a brand. DeWalt was born, because no one was buying and using the professional quality B&D stuff. From the GP, perhaps "jobsite feel" is a bit understated, but it is true that DeWalt is in existance, because no one would buy B&D tools for professional use, even though they had made such a product line, just because of the name/brand/image.

Yes. But what if you want a cheap computer? That is better than nothing at all. I do not want the best computer, I want something that does bare minumum.

And that's why there's no "love" for MS. Apple makes beautiful products, Linux is built for the love of it and both ways will garner "love". Building adequate stuff as cheap as possible makes it an "object", nothing more than a hammer and nails.

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with that; it's just in the scope of loving a product, cheapest way doesn't garner those feelings.

  18. Re:Someone please explain this to me on Retailers Press For Unified HD DVD Format · · Score: 1

    Mostly correct.

HDMI, I believe, has the standard in place. That is, if it has an HDMI jack, it supports HDCP.

DVI, on the other hand, may or may not have it. That is, there are DVI monitors/TVs that don't support HDCP and some that do. For example, my Sony 36" Wega does support HDCP; my Dell 24" LCD Monitor doesn't (both have DVI inputs).

By forcing users to have HDMI for a 1080i signal, those that have DVI (without HDCP support) will have to A: live with a standard definition signal, B: use a component (analog) connection to their monitor (if one's available) or C: buy a new monitor/TV.
