    Funny but NOT TRUE!

  2. What about... on Air Bags for Planetary Defense · · Score: 1

What happened to the idea of covering the asteroid with a light or dark colored dust to alter it's course? That sounded much more likely to work.

  3. Gamers not games on Gamers Drive High-End PC Market · · Score: 1

It's the gamers, not the games. Games don't buy and play themselves (yet), and computers don't buy new upgrades and install them (yet) - so while technically the games encourage people to go out and do the purchasing and upgrading, it's the gamers who are actually driving the market, not the game developers or the games themselves.

(Which should be just as much of a "Duh" as the original article, why there's a big argument about it here I'll never know =)

Gah... I just sent in my broken GeForce 2 card to them a few months ago. No word since. Does anyone know if RMAs will be processed, can I even expect to see my little $300 purchase fixed and returned to me?

  8. Re:Reply & tell them NOT to consider it. on Space Exploration Act of 2002 · · Score: 1

Is survival an admirable goal? Eventually, sooner or later, something is going to hit the Earth. Humans have the oppertunity to increase the likelihood of their survival should anything unfortunate happen.

  9. No Oni CD... on Worst Buy · · Score: 1

My own "Best Buy" story is pretty pathetic comparatively... =) They advertised an "Oni" soundtrack CD to be included with the game. After the third visit to the store over a month-long period, and getting yet another smiling salesperson telling me that "Oh yeah, they'll be in next week", I finally realized that I wasn't getting my CD. (I left my number several times, never got 1 call from them)

I get the impression that Best Buy does this kind of deception regularly, and has no qualms about it. Of course, a promotional soundtrack isn't all that big of a deal, I doubt I'd have thought about it again if I hadn't read this.

  10. Canadian facists?! on Airport Security vs. Cyborg Steve Mann · · Score: 1

I would have expected this kind of facist treatment from any airport security in the United States, but Canada should have been different... I guess we've finally corrupted them beyond all help.

Maybe the guards had all just been watching "Cops" or something. ^.^

(Or, maybe the presence of US military in pretty much every airport that has US flights is having an effect on their behavior.)

  11. SourceForge bandwidth costs on SourceForge Terms of Service Change, Users Unhappy · · Score: 1

So let's see, there's a big panic on Slashdot about SourceForge not making a whole lot of money and changing their user policy. So everyone goes and downloads a ton of stuff from them so it won't get lost in the 'inevitable' rumored shutdown that we all *KNOW* is going to happen now. ('we heard it on Slashdot, it MUST be true!')

And, gee, let me guess what happens next: SourceForge shuts down next month because their bandwidth costs soared astronomically for SOME unexpected reason. Golly. Who would have figured?

  12. GeForce X-billion on NVIDIA Unveils (And Tom's Reviews) The GeForce4 · · Score: 1

Just skip every other generation (or two) of video cards. If you're one of the suckers buying these things every time a new one comes out, all you're doing is helping feed the fire. Considering the fact that games are JUST NOW starting to use the capabilities of the GeForce3, there really isn't much point in upgrading right when a new product is released.

If you're having trouble resisting the temptation to buy Buy BUY, just remember the GeForce P-NIS XXXtension Ultra Accelerated 5-Billion is right around the corner!

And yes, I own a GeForce2 64mb Ultra, and I'm quite comfortable with the size of my... ramdrive. I plan to wait.

  13. MS releases new software! on I Love You "Virus" Hates Everyone · · Score: 1

Microsoft Press announced today the release of a new software package, titled "Microsoft Outlook". This tool kit, reviewed by many and considered to be yet another attempt by Microsoft to branch into alternate software development paths previously unexplored, has the creators of the popular "Virus Creation Lab" worried. "This could put me out of a job," claimed one respondent, who preferred to remain anonymous. Microsoft seems confident that their software will be recognized for what it is, an attempt to provide users of Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 with the capacity to create and test viruses, in the comfort of their own home. The software includes a scripting language, several virus templates, and rigorous testing utilities designed to maximize the effect of any virus scripted by the user. It also included an integrated e-mail client. Microsoft will begin releasing a free version of the software next week, known as Outlook Express. This version includes a few sample templates, a smaller version of the tool kit, the scripting language, and the integrated e-mail client. The user will have the option to upgrade to the full version of Outlook for a small charge.
