  1. Re:But why? on Dell Documents Reveal Microsoft's Pre-launch Vista Errors · · Score: 2, Interesting

Vista applies DRM to .mov/Quicktime files. I don't know exactly what happens, but saving or writing (copying) Quicktime files wraps them in a 'secure' layer (filename changes to green - it's now 'secure'). Once this happens, a lot of restrictions are placed on how the file can then be moved, copied, deleted, etc.

I don't use Vista for anything media production related so I haven't delved into this.. but it caught my eye a few weeks ago.

Exactly! I've said this for a while now.. been modded to hell and back over it many times..

Anytime you end up with something you didn't pay for, it's theft. Everyone focuses on the method of obtaining and claim, that's not theft, it's infringement - and completely neglects what the infringement gained. People need to stop looking at the means of transfer as the problem, and that they deprived someone else of payment as the problem. THAT'S THE THEFT (with a count of copyright infringement)!

  9. Macbook Pro keyboard issues still not fixed on Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update Brings Welcome Fixes · · Score: 1

The intermittent keyboard 'drops' still isn't fixed. To those unfamiliar, the problem is akin to the keyboard going into energy saver mode prematurely (however the rest of the laptop is still going). You have to hit a key once for the keyboard to turn back on before the keyboard starts working. Very frustrating if you're reading a page of comments on slashdot and hit the space bar to scroll down a page, and nothing happens. (you then have to hit it again now that the keyboard is 'woken up')

Like may be too strong. Rather, it's not bugging me or keeping me from working - and it's even growing on me. My work bought me a new Dell 530 desktop with Vista Business, seems to work fine (I actually kind of like Office 2007 too - Visual Studio 2008 Express is pretty cool as well). Probably just due to being forced to use it regularly.

I could be wrong as well, but I'm pretty sure BeOS was going for realtime (a la QNX, etc).

When you get bad service at a restaurant, not leaving leaving a tip only makes the server think you're an ass. Leaving a $.25 tip will still make them think you're an ass, but betters the odds of sorting themselves out (either via a manager, or themselves, etc).

Personally, this is the first election I'll have ever voted in where I felt like 1) my vote mattered (both to me and to the outcome), and 2) I'm excited for the potential of numerous candidates regardless of parties.

O'Malley's a complete asshole. Most of the state didn't really know about him before he was elected. I'm in Baltimore and it's a f*cking dumpster thanks to O'Malley's "mayorship" (is that a word?). And now he's doing it with the state.

He ran on an anti-slots campaign to beat Ehrlich, but as soon as he took office he did a complete 180 and pushed through (in a special session bypassing citizen/constituent oversight) legalization of slot machines. And along with that a ridiculous amount of new taxation focused almost exclusively on the service and small-business industries. I don't care about the slots, it's about all his blatant lying. He's killing the independent businessman in Maryland, and his other policies are insuring no larger/established corporations are going to want to EVER relocated and base themselves here.

Maryland already has one of the highest costs of living in the US.. not far behind Los Angeles and NYC. And it's getting much worse. A LOT of people are considering their options for relocating.

For those who don't know, Gov. O'Malley just forced upon the citizen of Maryland the BIGGEST state tax hike in the history of the United States of America. $1.7 BILLION tax hike for 2008.

    He's a crook and liar.
