Sounds like Jazz or Blues to me. Seriously, though, good call. The difference between a good guitarist and a bad one (in a rock band, with relatively static music) is the ability to recover without sounding like there was a problem. I've seen my share of garage bands at various venues around the Twin Cities and I've seen my share of stupid looks on guitarist faces when they hit a bad note or lose their place. Always worse if the bass gets off rhythm for half a measure.

It's just like seeing a theatrical production. If it doesn't look like a mistake, it wasn't a mistake.

I like the DS Lite controller, but the original DS seemed to have a problem in that both my arms cramped up. I think it has to do with the Lite being so small you can grip it from the sides and just get used to it, but with the phat I try to grip from the bottom and sides like other controllers and carpal tunnel tries to set in... You know, like with Guitar Hero.

Just a quick question about the HDMI port. Is there another way to get 1080p out of the PS3 without it? Because if the machine is supposed to run natively on 1080p, then what would have been the point of not including it when they say their machines are made specifically for it?

I've been reading about some relief groups that are handing out condoms to women whose husbands work in diamond mines for months at a time just so they won't spread AIDS to them when they get back. There is almost no education in South Africa and the government hasn't done much about it either. Combine that with extreme poverty and the West exploiting everyone they can to save a few bucks and you've got the epidemic. Here's a few articles. Your average EB or Gamestop employee is not above selling peoples pre-orders to themselves, family or friends and politely informing real pre-order holders that, not as many units came in as expected. I've had it happen with games over and over (special edition games and the like). Also with the PS2 back in the day (just got my money refunded after my bro's PS2 was DOA). A friend of mine was the ast manager at a gamestop for a while and would frequently offer to 'sell' me other's preorders of games and the PSP/DS. To which I told him to shove it. SOB wanted me to flip him a 20 so he could pocket it. I waited on the DS and never got a PSP. I'll take my chances at Best Buy this year (as I understand it they no longer take pre-orders) for my Wii. If I don't get one I'll head to Target. If nothing is there, I'll just go home and wait it out.

Even on /. I'd watch it with that one. Most of everything you list is widely accepted as law. Evolution (on the large scale, IE a one single-cell organism back in the day to insanely diverse planet today) is, on the whole, pretty shaky. Not trying to start an arguement, but there still isn't much good evedence to support the theory. A quick example would be the Cambrian Explosion which scientist have been rapidly struggling to explain, but, from the Wiki article, don't seem to be having a lot of luck with.

You still haven't addressed the issue. On gamer. Two systems. They WILL compete for TV time. You DO assume fixed time for gaming. 24hrs a day minus work, sleep, eating, etc. Sure, people with two systems likely play games more often, but that is still fixed time. Perhaps it will be more time with two systems, but you can't say that some guy goes home and games 2 hours a night will always play 4 hours with two systems (or 6 with three). Then again, you can't assume they won't.

The software will utlimately drive the playtime, but it becomes recursive. And license fees are the next profit-maker (or only for MS and SONY). The gamer will play games and buy games based on what the gamer experiences and expects to experience. MS, Sony, and Nintendo want to be the main source for every gamer, though they have different targets.

  14. Re:Arguably? on Grading the Sixth and Seventh Console Generations · · Score: 1

I'm glad someone agrees with me about that. I've never liked the playstation controllers. Back in the PS1 days I hated the split D-Pad because it was very difficult for diagonals. I think they had to keep it that way because of the pressure sensative nature of the Dualshock 2 (did any games actually use that besides MGS2?). And the symbols for the right thumb buttons made it extremely difficult because there was no cognative pattern for the layout (IE A, B, C; X, Y, Z). Games that require you to hit buttons based on screen input aren't ever easy without practicing each time. Kudos to Nintendo for fixing that with the Gamecube controllers. Too bad they aren't keeping that design.

Hmm... let me clarify. My arguement is for anyone who touts the philosophy Get a 360 + Wii, or a PS3 + Wii. Which is both MS and Sony. If I were MS or Sony, I would certainly want to endorse what looks like my least powerful competitor, but I really wouldn't mean it. If someone owns two systems, that means that both systems are going to fight for TV time for that consumer. And both Sony and MS know this.

But with the console market saying you think your customers ought to purchase a different gaming system is like BMW issuing a statement that in stead of its customers purchasing a Mercedes for their other driving needs, they should buy a Chevrolet (it's cheaper). You could still say, "Well, cars vs trucks." But in the end, there is still one driver, two vehicles. The driver is going to pick the one that best meets his/her needs at the time, or whichever is more fun. Same with the consoles. Gamers may have two, but they'll only use the one that's most entertaining.

Dangerous ground for Sony and MS to tread on. They are recommending a company with a track record consisting of well over 50% platinum hits (can't say for sure, but I'll still venture the guess, unless all the Mario Party's are killing that stat). It may help keep people away from the other expensive console, but it still puts another one the living room.

GS: Are you worried at all about Nintendo taking any marketshare from the PS3, or do you really feel like people will buy one HD console and the Wii?

DK: Yeah, for us it's apples and oranges when you compare the PS3 with Wii. They've done a great job of saying exactly who they're going after, the casual gamer, the hardcore gamer, and we've said exactly who we're going after. And you can't, when you put the systems side by side technologically, and even price-wise, they just don't compare to each other.

Okay, in reality, PS3 is going after every gamer. Just like the Wii (and 360). Sure, Nintendo is trying to reach out to people who wouldn't normally game, and making it much easier for them to start. That's nice and all, but what all three companies are targeting is your time, on your TV. HD or not. Every time I see this BS about not being able to compare one system with another it gets me kind of steamed. They're all entertainment devices over the same medium. That's the bottom line. They are apples and apples every time.

If you look at their pricing for some of their extra services, I think you'll find that they currently charge $20/month for unlimited information service. Normally you're paying $.01 per Kb. So downloading a song would effectively screw your wallet. From what I understand they're going to lower the price for unlimited info service to 15/mo and allow free music downloads to your phone. Most likely you won't be able to pull the song off the phone, but, hey, that's a start.

Better than 20/mo + $2/song or something like that, I guess.

I went with Cingular because they were the only phone company at the time that would allow my phone's bluetooth to work properly. I flat out refuse to buy a phone that is crippled like the phones Verizon was/is peddling. If I can't put my own ring tones on my phone, or my own music, I won't pay for it.

I ended up with the SonyEricsson s710a. No radio, can't listen to music over the bluetooth, and limited to a 128MB Duo Mem stick, but it's still pretty nice. And easy enough to just plug the mem stick into my reader and manage the files. I haven't even tried out the sync software that came with it. I had a horrible experience with thier Mini Disc softwear, don't want to deal with anything else of theres.

But now I'm screwed because Cingular's service is crap where I live (in a major metro area...) and they obviously don't care.

But, yes, I think a 2 year warranty would be perfectly reasonable given the amout of problems the PS1, PS2, XBox, and 360 had (I know two people who have been through multiple 360's, one of them is on his fourth).
