  2. Re:Will they do VIII? on Fan-Developed Ultima VI Remake Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's funny, as a kid I remember thinking all of those "legends" that kept coming up but that you never encountered were a pretty cool addition to the game. After all, not many games I played at that age took the time to create atmosphere and a background story for the game universe.

Later, when I learned these were parts of the game that weren't accessible due to bugs (or simply not having been developed) it sort of took away the mystique ;)

I remember they eventually issued a patch (I still remember downloading it with our recently upgraded modem!). It was supposed to make additional areas available and fix an end-game bug, but I didn't like it. It took away one of my favorite aspects of the game: The horrible jumping system! I used to LOVE jumping from platform to platform simply because I was good at it and my older brother was not! After the update jumping was just a matter of clicking on your target. This almost doubled the distance you could jump :(

I would love to see U8 remade in highres. I'd also love to see the Ultima Underworld engine remake actually progress (I think the project is near 10 years old). Maybe, now that I know what I'm doing, I'll contribute to the project myself.

Look, if you don't want people connecting to your wi-fi network hide the SSD and encrypt it securely

Encrypt it with what, WEP? That would help just as much as not broadcasting your ssid (and, for that matter, as much as MAC filtering). Honestly, these three approaches to "security" won't stop anyone who knows how to book a BackTrack liveCD.

  7. Same problems on Cooling the Planet With a Bubble Bath · · Score: 4, Insightful

Don't all these crazy "reflect back light somewhere in the ocean" have the same problem?
Whether you're covering the ocean with a white tarp, stretching tin-foil over a large number of floaters, or creating loads of tiny bubbles you're still depriving the ecosystem of light it is most likely dependent on.

No light, no plankton, no life.

  8. Re:Exactly backwards on Final Decision Deferred On ".xxx" Domains · · Score: 1

You make an interesting point... but wouldn't that raise quite a few technical issues? I can think of the following:

    • Sites stemming from walledgarden.org will no longer be able to references external dependencies (e.g. for javascript, media, etc...) which don't stem from walledgarden.org.
    • Authenticating website traffic might be more difficult or more susceptible to attack.

I'm no expert in this domain, so I expect the list is much longer. Any authorities care to jump in?

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I found a few years ago that VG soundtracks were the best coding music for me. It makes sense, though, since VG music is by design not meant to grab your attention but to be a pleasant background layer.
