That's called marketing. Of course the truth is stretched at some points, and of course MS is trying to make Linux look bad. THAT'S FUCKING MARKETING!!!!!!
Did you ever stop to think that blatantly propagandizing falsehoods in the marketplace is not of benefit to anyone... I would suggest Marketing is a wholy un-ethical and un-necessary 'thing'. Who needs it if it is constructed of obvious lies meant to mis-represent reality and truth.
That is how customers are won and lost!!! That is not how business works, my friend.
And here-in lies the root of the problem...capitalism prevents honest objectivity. See Capital by Marx.
But I digress, what is important here? If M$ is publishing purposefull half-truths and out-right lies, is it no longer "wrong"? Or do you expect us all to accept this swirling mess of self-serving lies as truth simply because it is 'marketing' meant to 'win customers'? Really turbine216, is it now wrong to take issue about being immoral? Or does serving $$$$ make up for all? The entire basis of your argument requires immorality - even for extremely liberal and wide definitions of 'morality.'
Anyone interested in 'insect-like' robots will want to do some reading on "B.E.A.M. Robotics", B.E.A.M. stands for Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics, and Mechanics. Bascially, it is the idea, codified by Mark Tilden (linus to beam roboticists (sp?)) that says that roboticists (sp?) should start by building/adapting simple autonimous robots, capable of small tasks. Each successive robot (the next one you build) should be slightly better. If we continue this (un?)natural evolution we should come up with life-like machines. Simple. Elegant. Capable.

not a tree-hugger by any means, but at the same time the first three on the list, which are actually real world solutions, draw the ire of every "green" on the planet as instruments of rape of mother earth.
I am a treehugger, of the highest order. This is pretty OT, but I want to explain something to you. Most "Greens" would probably be reasonable enough to see the problem on a whole. The earth is capable of sustaining only so much pollution. What that level is is debatable... lets just assume, on a long term, we are at/near/close/exceeding that limit. We cannot pollute at this level indefinitely. We will choke and kill everything (including ourselves) off the planet. This is a reasonable assumption.
Now, seeing as this is the case, we have two choices: A) Continue to our deaths. B) Curb pollution (consumption).
I would be happy to leave ALL coal power plants AS THEY ARE on the ENTIRE PLANET if we can make up for a equal reduction somewhere else... let me suggest children's happy meal toys. If we made the choice to NOT manufacture/burn/landfill 12312 million small-plastic-brick-a-brack trash every year could we reduce pollution significantly enough to accept the coal plants? maybe, maybe not... if not, lets stop producing.... single-voltage wall-wart transformers.. make them all multi-voltage, and stop supplying them with every electronic device.... or paper-boxes on toothpaste tubes.... or hard-plastic packaging on paper-clips... will these decisions be sufficient? I doubt it, but the point is, it would be EXTREMELY easy to make a group of small choices that would make our *problem* disappear... look around you - how much of that WASTE could you easily do without knowing we weren't headed to a toxic future? I bet there are an awful lot of simple small choices you'd (and I) would be happy to make... the alternative is not an option... we have to eventually make a choice here.
The point? We must choose where we are going to pollute. The "market" is a vehicle for death - plain and simple, citizens with conscience (greens like myself) can not be burdened to live in mud huts because their neighbours are not willing to stop consuming 'Limited Edition Hand Made Soap-Opera Actor Themed Plastic Dolls.' That kind of mindless waste costs us all.
I say keep the coal plants, but use the energy they create WISELY!

There are so many advantages for the purveyors of pop culture
Maybe-JUST MAYBE, we could collectively grow up a little and realize that our PRESENT 'pop-stars' may as well be CG. They live scripted, Public-Relations-hyped lives - dating, divorcing, fucking, drinking, clubbing, working, whatever - who cares? Why do I care what Kristina Applegate eats for supper?
The fact that "we" have a pop-culture phenomenon at all is proof of a greater illness in our culture... I am not sure exactly what would cause people to replace a 'real' relationship/knowledge with a real person (family/friend/neighbour) with the 'virtual-reward' of having 'virtual relationships' is mind-numbing.
The 'purveyors of pop culture' are meddling with the human-psyche in a uncontrolled and viscous manner. They purposely seek to build memes and use their vitality for profit, at the expense of the real health of the public, strangers. Like corporate propagandists (marketers and advertisers) these people seek to meddle in your mind, to take advantage of your desires and needs and to give them 'virtual satisfaction' by overwhelming you with a 'reality they create'... this realty is then exploited to create wealth for them. These plutocrats and oligarchies are out of control - I see no difference between the RIAA and Washington in terms of the genuine self-less-ness that would be expected of those who occupy positions of such power.
What does this have to do with CG pop stars? Well, think, what does it mean when people are willing to accept stories - told as fact - about virtual people. What does it say about the overall conditioning of modern people? about their ability to be influenced, as a group, from afar, with motivations completely unknown??? Why would we view a CG 'pop star character' as anything more than a playfull curiosity - why would the scripted existence of such a thing not illicit ire and a sense of being insulted. I can understand small children being mis-lead and accepting the concept of such a thing, but grown people, I believe should be a little more apprehensive to accept a 'CG person-product' in their lives.
do his stuff you'll notice the strong preference for lots of specialized tools, some of which might appear to be identical to the untrained eye.
You do realize that the reason he has all those tools, and uses/talks about them so much, is because the tool-manf. is the #1 show sponsor.
No one in his right mind would equip a tool-shop ala NormAbrahm, Norm - as good as a carpenter as he may/may not be - is a shill. The show puts $250,000 worth of tools in his shed and tries to convince handy-types that they need *anther* bit of equipment for their next project... its just not true.
i know this is OT, but I really dislike when people get snookered into missing the obvious self-interest of some corporate whore. In these days of "economic might is right" and "profit at any/all costs", it pays to be a little more aware of the motivations of others, question the seemingly innocuousness of a situation and be leery of the source of all information - it could be tainted to meet someone's selfish commercial motivations.... ala norm abrahm and his 1231^2 tools.
As for the idea of convergence vs. single function tools: I look at it like this, I could have an array of single-function devices to replace my x86 PeeCee, I dont because they all share common needs. My word processor, spreedsheet and midi app all require a interface: Monitor/Keyboard. My games, music and video all require a common audio system: my $20 snd pci card. Do I have a OGG player, Arcade Machine, TypeWriter/Word Processor, SpreedSheetProcessor, Calculator etc? no...
Really, what convergence does is reduce the cost of the individual functions. It allows my mp3 player to share an interface with my PIM on my pda, reducing the overall cost of each device - its about "value". Abstract the PIM, mp3 and email as 'functions' and look at your PDA again - you find that they are 99% the same device (if required to be single pcs of hardware) why would I want to do that?
Multi-function/General-function is the way to go. I want a miniature PC... like the Sharp LinuxPDA... give that wireless phone/data ability and its the "perfect" device... I the new 'digital devices' boiled down into the pocket version of my PeeCee... capable, expandable, powerfull and dynamic.
It's not targetted at home users. It's for office use.
Yes, but certainly for ignorant "small-office" types. Who is going to wire their office like this? Locking them into a 3Com scheme, not standard structured Cat5; One Port - One Drop.
This is going to lock you into their "Uplink Port" technology. Will everything behind the patch-cord become a mess of 3Com only connectors, cabling and termination blocks in the cabling closet? I find it difficult to believe that distributing "the switch" and using off-standard cable and terminations is going to *really* save you any money in cabling. Surely a 12port switch is cheaper than 3 of these units.
Further, regarding data-installs, straight from the article: "when the installation is billed to you, you are charged the same amout as if they had pulled all four cables separately, rather than all four at one time.

High taxes and the brain drain'll kill this one dead right quick.
Bullshit. HighTaxes in Canada are not a problem. This is bullshit. They are high, any tax is too much in some eyes, but they are not the highest. See here.
Secondly, the "brain drain" is bullshit forwarded by "tax cut" advocates.. it makes a nice meme but has little substance.
Further, Canada spends 9% of GDP on health care for 100% coverage, US spends14% with Dont like to pay taxes? Well, your gonna pay one way or the other, im betting the redundancy and weight of 'competition' and 'profit' wont end up being more disposable income...
How long until this little app ends up on a PC that is not on US soil? Will some foreign nation be able to make an offical-issue of this? It seems like the FBI might not be thinking this through.

Some would consider the lack of nudity, profanity, and general nastiness as a plus, not a constraint.
Some would consider the altering of reality, of public discourse, so as to not possibly offend someone... as a little bit profane in itself.
The more that people, young and old, see profanity on TV, the more they will assume it to be the norm and adopt it.
Why would you be concerned w/ my choice of language? with the verbage I use? Really friend, cencorship is bad, m'kay.
Maybe it is up to producers to encourage a higher moral standard instead of a lower one.
What standard, exactly, should the state set?
In Germany, they first came for the communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Catholic. Then they came for me -- and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.
-Martin Niemoller
C'mon people, we won't be taken seriously if we can't even learn the jargon.
Why not abandon their language and re-frame the situation in new verbage? Never underestimate the ability of time and money to propagandize ideas. The intellectual property advocates use the language they do for good reason, they define the terms of the debate, they pronounce the foundations of the situation, they organize the logic so the only conclusion can be the one they desire.
It is a very basic debating technique to question the basic assumptions of anothers arguemnt, when you disprove the foundation, something they rely upon, you can more easily disprove (by re-defining) their further conclusions - think house of cards.
Why do you think the government talks in rhetoric and half-truths as they do? Its a trick of language, "learning their jargon" will only give the RIAA/MPAA/Plutocrats a head start in making you "wrong".
I am finding it absolutely amazing that when I chime in political discussions w/ any opinion that is contrary to American-Group-Think(TM) it gets modded down as flaim or troll. It is absolutely fascinating to watch you Americans act so predictibly to your conditioning. Do you ever wonder how approvals for Bush tripled just because he "went to war"?
How does it feel that you country is part and parcel of the USA's plans for world domination?
I will forgive your ignorance, I really cannot expect much more, but petty barbs to my sense of nationalism will not receive your intended result. Canadians, other than their southern neigbours are a more pragmatic lot. We administer our nation and our government as a tool to further our collective goals and wishes. Being Canadian is less about religion, and more about perspective, wisdom and patience. Its what you Yankees will (hopefully) grow up to become.
Ah, SubtleNuance, my favorite troll
Please, go read the Moderators GuideLines. I most certainly am not a troll. I have a different opinion of the world than most/.ers (most american/.ers), but remember, you arent supposed to abuse moderation to supress dissenting opinion. But seeing the group-think at work, the 99% support for GWB, the "american at all costs", the "we support the president 100%" bs from the Republicratic congress, it doesnt suprise me that I am a 'troll' in your eyes. It only proves my point.
Even if the supreme court had allowed a several county recount bush still would have won. If the democrats had asked for an entire state recount and got it (which seemed like a bad idea at the time) Gore would have won.
Are saying that Gore *did* win but you have no problem with GWB being president? Are you mad?
However, when it's so close, it's more important that somebody win sooner rather the right person 6 months after the election.
No, you are very very wrong. A thorough transparent COMPLETE recounting of EVERY ballot is the sole acceptable solution. To be hurried - for what reason i dont know, the president isnt inaugurated for months after the vote - makes no sense. Why not take your time and be thorough, NOT doing so could only end up casting questions onto the legitimacy of your democracy, your president, your entire system? Very big stakes, for what reason were these things chanced? (aside: Bush's brother and his cronies were in charge of the re-count, this casts EVEN MORE doubt on the legitimacy of the event... very sad day for "american democracy")
is planning to do away with trials, replacing them by tribunals. Heh, but not for U.S. citizens.
I hereby propose Bill SN101; "Americans Shot on Sight Act" for first reading. This does not affect Canada's ideals and reputation of maintaining a peacfull and free domestic state, because, Hehehe hehe, its not for Canadian Citizens.
Is it a fact now that Americans feel they are entitled to the guarantees in there constitution, freedom, liberty and safety - but "foreigners" are NOT? I think your constitutional lawyers may have a problem with this...
Only for alleged terrorists in a certain situation. Since 90% of Americans probably think shooting them on sight is our the idea, a trial at all is pretty good.
Please repeat this, its stunning
First of all, the bush administration seems less likely to do this now that international support is more necessary for the war in Afghanistan.
Fair weather friends are we? Im amazed that you would propose this as acceptable. Together, the rest of the world has no problems doing without the USA. Never forget that. Have a look at the domestic and foreign policies of the rest of the world - you will find some significant differences in opinion... America is moving away from the rest of the world....
Secondly, no countries ever follow treaties if it doesn't suit them.
What are you talking about? You cannot simply walk away from treaties? There are SIGNIFICANT ill effects of doing so. Not least of them would be loosing-face.
If any other country had the money lying around to develop an ABM system you bet your asteroids they would....because american GPS systems are such a great military target, and redundancy is good.
Who is this great empire of war-mongering foreigners you are trying to 'defend' yourself against?
I just dislike half-informed country bashing.
Really - how do you feel about ignorant jingoism? In short, i %worship_action% to %some_diety% that your opinions are not shared by your countrymen. Was your post serious?
Meanwhile the Bush admin. has declared that it will unilaterally withdraw from any agreements it finds to be inconvenient - including biggies like the ABM treaty.
How quickly they forget eh? The US scuttled 3 completely supported international initiatives:
Kyoto Protocol
Standing War Crimes Court. There were US Military from Korea on the docket.
Standing / Enforceable BioWeapons Inspection teams. The US refused to endorse this, they claim its to defend BigPharma, but I wonder...
Now they need the rest of the world, they want to form a broad-coalition to end terrorism... I see this "if your not with us, your against us" rhetoric as a pre-European vs USA "Superpower" duality volley, but I digress.
I wonder how the USA would react if another nationa said 'we arent going to join *your* "coalition against terrorism" because it may ill-affect our economy', I wonder if THAT is an acceptable answer to the request from the USA.
, I was not meant to promote him in any way... It's intent is quite the opposite
Please, this the second time I've posted regarding your.sig*, explain how this 'means the opposite'? If your suggesting that it would somehow play as "its offensive for us to assault the poor in this way" wit. If you expect Middle-America to understand this kind of nuance of languge, I guarantee that statement is wholly mis-understood. The "middle-america" that 100% supports war with Smelly-Foriegners(TM), the "middle-america" that flip-flops on opinion of the most incapable dim-wit yet to serve as a head of state - Just Wont Understand.
This statement displays a particularly offensive form of sardonic xenophobia, as was intended. It really isn't as sly and humble as you'd like to suggest.
*Im not suggesting it is to offensive to display, and that you should have to remove it to avoid offending me (or others). I am just trying to understand how you could support such a statement, and if you do, I intend to challenge that support. I am not trying to censor, Im trying to engage the idea.
Well, my truthful analysis of your nation was on-topic in the post you linked. It is a new level of lock-step McCarthyism to label anything that may question the decisions of your 'leaders' as "un-America", i have to commend you citizen, You Are Doing Good Work.

*Thank you - Im glad you noticed. Your opinion is im "un-american", because you american, most others (them being Citizens of the World) would simply see me as truthful or possibly insightful... but hey, could be worse, I could be a xenophobic, ignorant jingoist.

How long until this little app ends up on a PC that is not on US soil? Will some foreign nation be able to make an offical-issue of this? It seems like the FBI might not be thinking this through.
... then again, there is Echelon.... apparently no one minds...
Slashdot has reported on the Canadian entry into the XPrize contest. The DeVinci project intends to raise there rocket to high altitudes via baloon and launch from there. Perfect example of the KISS principle well applied.
Good Luck to them.

/.ers (most american /.ers), but remember, you arent supposed to abuse moderation to supress dissenting opinion. But seeing the group-think at work, the 99% support for GWB, the "american at all costs", the "we support the president 100%" bs from the Republicratic congress, it doesnt suprise me that I am a 'troll' in your eyes. It only proves my point.
I have a different opinion of the world than most
Even if the supreme court had allowed a several county recount bush still would have won.
How quickly they forget eh? The US scuttled 3 completely supported international initiatives:
Kyoto Protocol
Standing War Crimes Court. There were US Military from Korea on the docket.
Standing / Enforceable BioWeapons Inspection teams. The US refused to endorse this, they claim its to defend BigPharma, but I wonder...
Now they need the rest of the world, they want to form a broad-coalition to end terrorism... I see this "if your not with us, your against us" rhetoric as a pre-European vs USA "Superpower" duality volley, but I digress.
I wonder how the USA would react if another nationa said ' we arent going to join *your* "coalition against terrorism" because it may ill-affect our economy ', I wonder if THAT is an acceptable answer to the request from the USA.
, I was not meant to promote him in any way... It's intent is quite the opposite
.sig*, explain how this 'means the opposite'? If your suggesting that it would somehow play as "its offensive for us to assault the poor in this way" wit. If you expect Middle-America to understand this kind of nuance of languge, I guarantee that statement is wholly mis-understood. The "middle-america" that 100% supports war with Smelly-Foriegners(TM), the "middle-america" that flip-flops on opinion of the most incapable dim-wit yet to serve as a head of state - Just Wont Understand.
Please, this the second time I've posted regarding your
This statement displays a particularly offensive form of sardonic xenophobia, as was intended.
Seeing as how the truth makes me a " Un-American* Troll", I will repost them here for your pleasure:Read Here to learn how Bush has appointed ex-Iran-Contra Terrorists and convicted Congressional perjurer to key posts. Seeing all these cold-war CIA criminals in cabinet makes you wonder about GWB's father's involvement.
Click Here to learn how America has its own state sponsored Terrorist Training Camp, Colourfully called the School of Americas. Learn how its graduates form death squads in Central and South America.
Click here to learn about the United States Department of Defence's plan to kill domestic and foreign civilians in order to create a plausible excuse to start a war with Cuba during the 'ColdWar'. Funny, based on the actions/reaction of America and its citizens based on the WTC incident, you'd think that something like that might actaully work... or come to reality.... makes you wonder doesn't it.
*Thank you - Im glad you noticed. Your opinion is im "un-american", because you american, most others (them being Citizens of the World) would simply see me as truthful or possibly insightful... but hey, could be worse, I could be a xenophobic, ignorant jingoist.
