Heh, no, I read that part, but I thought I would throw the suggestion out there anyway. As crazy as it sounds, if you hadn't said you weren't a computer guy, I would have assumed you already knew about custom CSS sheets!

What I've taken away from CSS Garden is that, through CSS, you can provide drastically different interfaces with the same content. Why couldn't Slashdot do something like that? Provide users with different ways of viewing the forums?

Alaska Jack, one thing that you might not be aware of with CSS is that it's possible to write your own CSS style sheets and make your web browser use them instead of the one that the website designer has created. Slashdotters who are so inclined could make their own version of Slashdot's CSS file and make their web browser load that instead. If you want to do this, try downloading core-tidied.css and try editing some of the features on it. Then make your web browser load it, and see how you can change the layout. Hope this is helpful for you.

That was a great Slashdot beatdown. Bravo. I also own a PS3 and got it for two reasons. One: Metal Gear Solid 4. Two: Grand Theft Auto 4. I can't play those on any other systems (well, I can't play them on ANYTHING right now, but that's besides the point) so I got a PS3. The number of good games means nothing to me, so when people say there are no good games I don't really care. I've got Skate, Ninja Gaiden, and Virtua Tennis. There's three good games right there. I've only got so much money. I'm not going to be buying eighty games so I don't care.

The purpose of speed limits on interstates is for safety and fuel efficiency.

Will somebody please start writing games for Linux so I can be free of this nonsense?

It's been said before and it'll definitely be said again. Format your drive, install Linux, and buy a console. $100 will get you last generation's consoles, and there are a ton of games available for any of them. I know where you're coming from, I ditched Windows a few years ago after many attempts of easing myself in. I ended up getting a Mac and the turning point was when Windows was pissing me off so much with its idiosyncrasies that I eventually stopped using Windows altogether. Sure, I miss playing some of the strategy games that Windows PCs are so great for, but there are enough games out there for consoles. Next time you feel the urge to reinstall Windows to get rid of all the accumulated crud, try installing Linux by itself first. Try it for a month, see if you can do it. I bet you can. But definitely get a console first. Otherwise you'll go nuts without games to play!

  16. Re:SKU? on Leaks Reveal New Xbox 360 Package · · Score: 1

I'll shed some light on why you see the term SKU thrown around so frequently on gaming websites. There's a group of people out there who like video games more than the common man does. They spend their time arguing about the relative merits of each video game system, they write blogs about video games, they listen to podcasts about video games, they scheme about how to get to trade shows. To these video game superfans, the closer they can get to "the industry," the better they feel. They aren't content with just playing video games. By using the term SKU, they can appear to be industry insiders who know the jargon. Writing in a manner that is understandable to the greatest number of readers is not as important as projecting a facade of knowledge and sophistication to their readers. Sure, their article would make more sense if they just wrote product instead of SKU, but then us readers wouldn't feel like we're getting the inside scoop. We'd just be reading another fan's rumor mill web page.

I read the article with my high-school level German comprehension, and I don't see anywhere where Hollenshead specifically says they won't be supporting Linux. Just because it wasn't mentioned as a target platform doesn't mean it won't be on that platform. It could very well be that Hollenshead didn't mention it because their Linux versions haven't sold very well in comparison with the platforms that he did mention.
Also, I would think that if id went through the effort of making an OpenGL version of the engine, they might as well port it to Linux, particularly if they're also going to port it to Playstation 3 and XBox 360. I don't think there's anything to be worried about here.

I think this is a state by state thing. I was a notary in Vermont for a few years and I did not keep a copy of what I notarized. I did log the signings that I did, for my own benefit, but there was nothing in the laws governing notaries saying I would have to do so. Basically, the laws in Vermont said that if you notarize something without using proper diligence to make sure that the person signing the document is actually who they say they are, you'd be liable. So it was in the notary's best interest to only accept official identification and try and spot counterfeit ID. However, unless there was a problem, nobody came around to check these things. I just had to swear to the state that I wouldn't knowingly notarize false documents.
