But sometimes that person is really tight with the CEO and it becomes very difficult to justify playing roullette with your own salary.

And I don't want to hear it about getting a better job where you don't have to deal with the politics...any sufficiently sized organization (say, more than three people) will develop office politics. It is human nature. I've worked in many organizations trying for years to find the mythical "no bullshit" company...the closest I ever got was when a business partner and I worked for ourselves as consultants...but even then, with just two people, bullshit happened.

    Wait...maybe it's me!

Note: I'm not saying it couldn't possibly be a typo. I'm saying Microsoft has purposely modified their code to cause similar results in the past (DR-DOS, "Windows isn't done until Lotus won't run...", etc.) and I think it's fair to say the "benefit of doubt" is well worn out.

On a site where (I presume) most readers/posters consider themselves free-thinkers, there still tends to be "group think" and the ideal of individualism gets swallowed up by our need to belong to a group. I think it says a lot about the human condition.

...Excuse me while I wipe away the water that just exploded from my mouth onto my monitor when I read that comment...

Very few of today's American and International Corporations are capitalist. They are all for government handouts (socialism) so long as they are handing out to them. They are not for free markets (capitalism) as they require true competition, an inherent lack of control, and an inability for wealth (and power) to amass to a miniscule subset of the global population.

They are oppressive, yes. They are not socialist. Neither are they capitalist. What they are (aside from horrible) is beyond me...

That being said...I am a lefty...but what that has to do with it I don't know. If I wrote with my right hand, I'd feel the same.

I think the real reason they've agreed to agree and stop pursuing new laws is because they figured out the harder they push for new legislation to protect themselves, the harder others (eg. Rick Boucher) will push for additional laws to protect consumers' fair use.

If they stop the push to legislate for business, the push to legislate for consumers lessens and they can do whatever they want since there are no laws against it.

Microsoft did break the law. They were found guilty. Even though the current administration rolled over and played dead on the issue, they certainly have the right to force default formats on Microsoft if it were to be found as a fitting remedy to anti-trust violations (you know THOSE LAWS THEY BROKE).
