By 'naughty words' do you mean cursing/swearing? Some people seem to think swear words are pornographic despite the fact that they are not.

  2. I haven't read it on Teacher Suspended For Reading Ender's Game To Students · · Score: 1

I can't imagine what the problem could have been. I've only read one of the books in the series (Shadow Puppets) and that was tame to say the least. Anyone know for sure what could have been construed as pornographic? If it is a bit more 'grown-up' in general I might consider giving it a try!

  4. Not ready for primetime on The Risk of a Meltdown In the Cloud · · Score: 1

My boss signed up for a certain accounting software and quickly found out that it wouldn't work for our company because we do business internationally and the cloud version is not set up to handle different currencies. I don't know the details, but I thought that was pretty lame considering how much business is transacted internationally. So, whether a 'meltdown' is likely to happen or not, for our company it will be some time before the cloud version of this particular software is ready for us to find out!

I like Apple computers. There I said it. That doesn't mean that I particularly like the company. I do agree that the unnecessary difficulty in repairing the things - even something as basic as replacing the hard drive - is not right. If I could easily install OS X on a beige box I would do so but I'm probably not nearly technical enough to successfully attempt it. It is not the computers I like so much as the OS. I used Windows up until XP and never enjoyed the experience. I have tried Ubuntu and it just didn't stick for some reason. So I'm sort of stuck with Apple until a real alternative (for me) turns up. I say good luck to the Windows and Linux users if it works for them.

I worked for a Japanese company for 10 years. It was always super-important to be SEEN to be working - even if there was really nothing to do. If caught idle the boss would usually find some menial task for the idle drone to perform. Often quite demeaning. On the other hand, what was good about this attitude is that if there was some menial shit that really did need to be done the bosses and managers would pitch in and work along side the rest of the staff. So there was a sort of equality - all parts of the same machine (not saying that the machine part is good). It is a clearly different cultural attitude to work. As to my Japanese colleagues productivity, I'd guess mediocre at best. My impression is that in a company setting the best way to survive for Japanese workers is to be just average regardless of your real capabilities. The nail that stick up gets hammered down.

  20. No, I don't think that. But I live in the US so I'm not must making it up. I also know from experience that many Europeans have ignorant stereotypical views about America and Americans (and other countries too, even their neighbours).
